Unique piece of vintage, primitive, Mexican folk art that feels like a brick material. It depicts three Colima dogs around a central pot or bowl. The clay pottery has a warm burnt umber and terracotta color. It measures approximately 9" wide by 8" tall by 3" mouth diameter at the rim of the bowl. It is in good shape but one of the dogs necks has a visible crack. I personally don't think it affects the wonder of this piece at all. I'm not certain of its age. There are no identifying marks on this piece either. Great find for your Mexican Folk Art collection or southwestern decor. This is a fairly heavy piece so postage will reflect that. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately ... moretwo thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on its history or provenance. But shows many indications of its age. It's a fascinating piece that is sure to complement any collection. Two legs repaired somewhat roughly. One ear is broken. The other is chipped. Nicely burnished brown surface with light mineral deposits and a moderate amount of root marks over the entire surface. Overall good condition. Small surface chip on nose and ear. A very high quality. Large Protoclassic burnished terracotta Colima dog figure, from the Colima culture, dating to approximately 200 B.C. 200 A.D. Exhibiting a beautiful dark red colour. The plump beast stands on squat. Bent legs, with large round pot-belly, short, erect tail, pricked ears, exposed teeth and with male genitalia modeled on the underside of the creature. These enigmatic figures were produced in what is now Mexico from the 3rd Century B.C. This is a primitive piece of pottery made in Colima. Mexico circa 400-800 A.D. It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. Up for auction is a pre-Colombian painted ceramic Colima dog. It came from a collectors' estate sale and the origin was described as Western Mexico. The dog measures 6 1/2" from the tip of the nose to the tail and is 4 1/4" high to the tip of the ear. There is some damage to the artifact. Which is fully shown in the pictures. A chip on one side of the nose and on one leg. Looks like the leg with the chip was reattached. This is a great example of pre-Colombian art. 1) What. Very rare example of erotic Precolumbian art. This is a Colima gingerbread woman. West Mexico, 1,800-2,200 yrs old, item#65. Terracotta sculpture- in a style similar to other Colima. Classic period(200 B.C. 200 A.D. flat, standing, nude females(which can be seen on the internet by searching for"Precolumbian Colima sculpture" except that this one has a huge mons and buttocks. Other features include: otherwise flat profile; small breasts; pouty. Open lips; stylized. Minimalist face; ear rings; hair in 2 buns on top of head; thick neck; broad shoulders; truncated hands and feet; and orange clay color slightly mottled from uneven heat in firing and/or age(particularly visible on the back) 2) Dimensions. 6 inches high(about 16 centimeters) 3) Condition. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. A Pre-Columbian Colima Mask. Comala Type, Protoclassic ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250. This sculpture of a Colima mask of convex form. With typical shamanistic head cap in relief, dating to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican sculptural tradition, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250, displays an open mouth, a hooked nose, a raised, but rounded point on each cheek, and round, pierced-through eyes. There is a drill hole on each side of the mask at near eye level. The reverse side is concave. The size is smaller than most Colima masks, so may have been created for a child or small dwarf. Dating to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican sculptural tradition, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250, displays an open mouth and an up-turned tail. Distinctive features include: the fine-line incising of the natural formation of the eyes, the open mouth, and the detailed nose& nostrils. Colima Jade Amulet- PF.1476D Origin: Western Mexico Circa: 300 BC to 300 AD Dimensions: 2" 5.1cm) high x.875" 2.2cm) wide Collection: Pre-Columbian Art Medium: Jade The Colima are part of a group of archaeological cultures– known almost purely from their artworks– referred to as the Western Mexico Shaft Tomb(WMST) tradition. There are many distinct groups within this agglomeration. And their relationships are almost totally obscure due to the lack of contextual information. All of the cultures encompassed under the WMST nomenclature were in the habit of burying their dead in socially-stratified burial chambers at the base of deep shafts. Which were in turn often topped by buildings. Originally believed to be influenced by the Tarascan people, who were contemporaries of the Aztecs, thermoluminescence has pushed back the dates of ... morethese groups over 1000 years. Although the apogee of this tradition was reached in the last centuries of the 1st millennium BC, it has its origins over 1000 years earlier at sites such as Huitzilapa and Teuchitlan, in the Jalisco region. Little is known of the cultures themselves, although preliminary data seems to suggest that they were sedentary agriculturists with social systems not dissimilar to chiefdoms. These cultures are especially interesting to students of Mesoamerican history as they seem to have been to a large extent outside the ebb and flow of more aggressive cultures– such as the Toltecs, Olmecs and Maya– in the same vicinity. Thus insulated from the perils of urbanization, they developed very much in isolation, and it behooves us to learn what we can from what they have left behind. The arts of this region are enormously variable and hard to understand in chronological terms. Mainly due to the lack of context. This is what we believe to be an authentic Pre Columbian Colima Ball Player Statue. It has been part of a family collection since the early 1970's. It is very large measuring 14 inches tall. The bat measuring 9 3/8 inches long, the waist measuring 4.5 inches wide. It was cracked and has been professionally repaired but looks great for its age. Description This authentic genuine antique Pre-Columbian Colima(possibly Jalizco) 200BC-200AD terracotta pottery zoomorphic vessel jug. Is beautifully hand formed in red earthenware clay as a white nosed coati laying atop a large gourd with a small snake grasped in its claws, with the coati's head raised snarling and mouth open to act as the spout for pouring. There is a short filling spout to its back with small stirrup handle connecting the two. The front arms of the coati have applied ring armlets which appear on early Colima pottery human(gingerbread man) figures. All the details like protruding eyes, ears, flaring nostrils, fangs(teeth) front limbs, armlets, toes(claws) snake, gourd details and tail as well as spout and stirrup handle, are hand rolled/modelled and applied to the body of the vessel. This amazing dramatic piece has ... morea part hand burnished surface to the upper part(shoulder) of the gourd and to the filling spout and top of the strirrup handle. The protruding parts of the coati figure have acquired partial polish from handling. Much of the surface has encrusted calcification and deposits from burial. The vessel does have old very neat museum quality restoration to the gourd. Running as a faint line join across the back of the base and up the sides and travelling forward under the front limbs of the Coati, with repairs to the toes(claws) which lay on the gourd surface behind the snakes body and has one thumb missing. The restoration is hardly noticeable and does not have any over painting, just very accurately glued and filled along the line with suitably coloured material(please see photos) This wonderful piece came from a 19th century collection in an old local Norfolk Estate and has been in our own collection for several decades. The reclintario is one of the most interesting works of art left by the Colima of western Mexico. It is a mythical combination of beasts. Variously described as half bird and half dog or a divine bird with human attributes. It is sculpture, vessel and furniture accessory, serving as a back rest for persons of high status. Scholars know of at least two types of Colima dogs, one to be fattened up and ritually sacrificed or eaten and one to serve as a watchdog and healer of the ill. This plump hairless canine known as a Techichi or Escuincle is thought to be related to the Chihuahua or Mexican Hairless also known as the Xoloitzcuintle. The Xolo dog was named for the deity Xolotl, the God of the Underworld, and believed to guide the deceased as they journeyed to the afterlife.
