Flint knapping was the process of chipping(as opposed to drilling, grinding, or cutting) flint into tools or ornaments. The Maya of southern Mexico developed this technique into a true art form! Ceramic rattle in the form of a mold made female figure. Mold made figures from the Island of Jaina are frequently found in numerous grave offerings there,moreover, female priestess figures are well known. But this so called abundance comes into perspective in the pages of"Maya Anthropomorphic Figurines from Jaina Island, Campeche, by Christopher Corson. This is the 1976 version of his 1972 doctoral thesis. He was able to locate 9 specimens of the type of this piece. Nine is considered abundant. Mold made figures of ten appear to lack crispness due to soft set in the mold and/or erosion. This one is mint crisp. It must have been an ideal set in the mold ... moreand have come from a tomb that remained dry throuugh the centuries. This quadruped plate is colorfully polyhcromed with an array of glyphs and animal effigies. The offering plate is painted, overall, with an orange ground, further decorated in black, red, and darker orange and each hollow leg contains a rattle bead.The central image shows a crouching spotted jaguar, king of the jungle, and surrounded by several bands in red, deep orange, and black. Surrounding the rim are two long tailed parrots alternated by two bat-like images with an upward curving snout, tiny fangs, and spread open wings and tiny arms, possibly an anthropomorphic deity.The plate's exterior features a small relief turtle head wearing ear-flares, two carved panels ... moreappearing to be a Chac-like deity painted in black, and four representations of the glyph'Ik' meaning'wind' The concept of the rain provider and wind were prevalent themes. The plate has been glued together from five pieces with break lines visible. Dimensions: 4" in height x 11-3/4" in diameter.

Rare Prer-columbian Maya Bone Reptile Pendant Click on these links to view larger photos: 1- 2- 3 A choice and rare bone effigy pendant depicting a crododile or iguana from Guatemala. Ca. 400-600 A.D. This fine carving is shaped in the reptile form with a spiny back, legs, and a long up bent head with toothy mouth. Retains two small obsidian high polished plugs, one for the eye and the other midway inserted in the neck. Drilled twice for suspension on the top and rear side of carving and appears to have had the tail broken in ancient times and re-ground. In excellent condition save a modern break to the rear foot. Fine and rare find. Overall with strong ancient patina. 4-3/8 inches long
