Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

All of the pieces are black in color and are quite small(see dimensions below) The pieces shows the wear and erosion characteristic of these excavated artifacts. But are in overall great condition. One of the pots has a noticeable chip and the rest have small chips. Not bad for being so antique! It was part of a major 19th century collection assembled by an American banker. The ancient Chupicuaro devoted their time and skills to creating pottery figurines. And other small artifacts. Characteristically flat. Chupícuaro human figurines can also be realistically three dimensional or shaped into vessels. They are distinguished by their slanted, coffee-bean shaped eyes. The figurines are typically depicted as female, indicated by a part in the center of the hair or headdress, and can be fashioned with intricately molded clay clothing and jewelry. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated ... morewith bright colors. More pics happily sent upon request. ABOUT COLIMA. MEXICO: The state was home to a number of pre-Hispanic cultures as part of Western Mexico. Archeological evidence dates human occupation of the area as far back as 1500 BCE. With sites here contemporary with San Lorenzo on the Gulf Coast and Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico. One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices ... moreera which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements which characterize the pre-Hispanic peoples of Colima appear such as shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called“rojo bruñido” or burnished red. The next phase called Comala, covers the time period from around 100 to 600 CE, centered on a site of the same name. Comala people would perfect burnished red pottery and develop representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the“fattened dogs” The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. The Chanal site was active from the 6th to the 15th centuries and was the main culture for the Colima area. Belonging to this culture was a number of smaller sites and most of the ones known and explored to date. After Chanal the largest related site is La Campana but most contain pyramidal bases and plazas with structures often containing rounded edges. Images of Huehueteotl and Tlaloc appear with this culture. Which may indicate the origins of the cultures that ultimately settled central Mexico. There is one other site call

The figure, with a large chip to one ear and the bottom of one foot, has all the original red paint, now faded to a soft orange-red color. Manganese deposits are evident one the surface from almost two thousand years beneath the earth, has an open spout on the figure's back, some archaeologists think that vessels such as this were used to hold a bitter chocolate concoction. 3-1/2" 8.9cm) long, 2-7/8" 7.3cm) wide, and 2-1/2" 6.3cm) tall, not sold mounted comes with the freestanding labeling placard shown in the photo.
