Title, Dan Standing Female Figure Frowning with Stand Liberia African Type of Object, Carving. Sculpture, Country of Origin, Liberia/Ivory Coast, People, ... moreDan, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Mid 20th Century, Dimensions, Height is 13.5 inches, Overall Condition, stable, Damage/Repair, body damaged. Holes and chips from old insect damage arrested, dents, Additional Information: A Dan standing figure with a frowning expression in the face! The figure stands with her arms attached to the her body. The figure is made from hard wood and is in stable condition besides the old insect damaged already arrested. Sculpted figures among the Dan or Yacuba are commissioned by wealthy or socially prominent men to represent their favored wife. Sometimes sculpted with a baby on their back. The figures exemplify the ideas of fertility and continuity of the family. These relatively uncommon sculptures are known as"lu me" or"wooden person" and can be over 60 centimeters in height. They do not portray ancestors, but are stylized portraits of real individuals, closely representing the hairstyle, body markings, and physiognomy of the wife. In some instances"lu me" sculptures are made public in the village during a ceremony in which the man who commissioned the carving is recognized-gaining social prestige. These figures may also be kept in small houses and only publicly shown on special occasions. Her face and ears are well carved and shown in detail. The Mande speaking Dan people of northern Liberia and neighboring Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire migrated south from present-day Mali. And today live in forested regions as agriculturists. Also known as the Yacuba, the Dan live in politically non-centralized villages and towns ruling themselves through a complex arrangement of family lineages, men’s secret societies, and conjunct initiation ceremonies. Known for their numerous wooden masks and masquerades, the Dan share many cultural and masking traditions with their Mano neighbors in Liberia and th

Title, Baule Female Figure Standing on Stool Cote d'Ivoire Africa, Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, ... moreBaule, Materials, Wood. Pigment, beads, cotton cloth Approximate Age, Second half of the 20th century, Dimensions, 20 inches H. x 3.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, large cracks in head. In body, and in base, Additional Information: A standing female figure in the finest Baule style. The beautiful striated hairstyle and scrarification patterns in body are impressive. The face is so sublime and sensitively-rendered that there is a possibility that this piece represents a specific person. Though most likely it represents an idealized female ancestor. Baule figures might represent the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and or the ‘spirit world’ spouses. The spirit lover figures are known as ‘Blolo Bla’. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or ‘sit’ on the figure. Other figures in shrines served specific local ritual purposes. The obvious wear and differences of the color of the surface indicates some age for the figure and the remains of offering on the face reinforce the thought that the figure was once in a shrine where she would receive offerings. Her seated position with one hand resting on her thigh and the other offering her breas
