They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. May be some candle wax residue in bowl. There was a fair amount of dust on this item when it was photographed and shows especially on the jagged rim of the bowl. ADDED DETAILS: This is an unusual piece depicting a 4-legged figure with a bowl/vessel on its back. The face is typical for the region-slit eyes. Beaked nose and broad spool ears. The high headress becomes part of the razor-jagged-edge of the bowl. The bowl is broad and deep and is dark. Possibly from incense or small ceremonial burnings. The figure is female/male showing breast and penis. There are faint decorative markings visible randomly throughout. Please view photos ... morecarefully for detail. Pre-Columbian figure sculpture pottery from estate collection
This piece comes from an extensive estate collection. I am not sure of the exact location this piece is from but I was told this was collected in the early 1900's in Mexico. It may be Mayan or Aztec but I am not sure. Please see all photos for the best description I can offer myself. I am sure there are experts who will know exactly what it is. This figure comes from part of a collection from an important Northwest Artist who loved Mexico. This figure measures 4 1/8 inches tall. Has some of it's original paint and no damage to limbs or face. It can stand on it's own with out any problem. This is a primitive piece of pottery made in Colima. Mexico circa 400-800 A.D. It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. Round forms and their warm brown-red slip. Colima is particularly known for its wide range of animal. Especially dog, figurines. Ceramic dogs are widely known from looted tombs in Colima. Dogs were generally believed in Mesoamerican cultures to represent soul guides of the dead and several dog ceramics wear human masks. Most seated figures in West Mexican art represent nobility and the figure also holds a baton that represents both rulership and artillery. Nayarit figures. The body, clothing and ritual costume of these figures are heavily adorned with numerous tattoos, multiple body piercings, and decorative clothing.
