This piece was described as Mayan by the seller when they originally bought it. Originally it had a lucite mount that it sat on and this stand which had a metal plaque and a dedication broke during a moving of houses sometime in the 80s. Owners neglected to fix stand and stand was eventually lost. So I'm really shooting from the hip and would very much appreciate any information from anyone with more expertise could share. Carved as a figure's head with some large round earrings and/or ... moreear deformation. Some kind of large ring seems to pierce from the lower lip to the underside of chin. Lots of wear and weathering is visible. Nose is large and pointed with good definition. Mayan and the demon/deity is Tlaloc the rain god. Who demanded the tears of children. The Mayan priests tore the children's fingernails out to make them cry, then drowned them in a well. Beautiful one of a kind antique Pre-Columbian Stone Effigy. Idol, Axe God Figura l Hand- C arved Statue believed to be around 200-600 BC in ag e. This piece is very heavy- weighs just over six(6) pounds and is hand-carved from a gorgeous grey toned stone- you can see the traditional stance and markings that are typical of this p articular era in Pre-Columbian Art. This is a beautiful piece from my family's estate in excellent condition as you can see from the photos. My father had a Doctorate in Pre-Columbian Art History from USC and traveled extensively throughout the world and specifically in Mexico throughout the 1940's-1950's amassing his collection through his traveling and buying at antique and auction houses. This is an authentic and highly collectible piece from his collection. My father is now deceased but passed on much ... moreof his knowledge to me throughout the years and I will do my best to describe everything I know about this piece for you. I have shown this piece with an outstanding. Rare, out of print book that was also part of my father's extensive collection, that is renowned as one of the best books(at that time) on Pre-Columbian, African, Oceanic and Indonesian Art. The book is printed in German and is titled. Kunst, Ferner, Lander" and was printed in 1956. I have attached a photo of a similar piece from the book that illustrates the Pre-Colum bian statues and figures from that era/ time period that is very similar in it's carvings to the one I am selling. Some type of clay pottery or stone, nor of the ethnic group this piece represents, Mayan, Maya, Incas, other? This piece stands 5" to the top of the wire hanger. 4 1/2" to the plaque top, measures 4 1/4" at the widest, and it measures 2 1/2" deep(sits off the wall) The back is concaved in, is not flat. Condition of this piece is good. The wire hanger remains attached firmly. Antique MAYAN Carved Stone Figure AZTEC Carved BLACK STONE FIGURE Deity Effigy
Offered is a Mayan Aztec carved stone deity or effigy measuring approx. 7 inches in height. The figure is carved from a moderately heavy. Yet porous, piece of black stone. The figure is approx. 7 inches high and approx. 3.75 inches wide, at the elbows. The stone measures approx. ¾ to 1& 1/8 inches thick. The back of the carving has been polished to a soft luster, as have the high spots of the relief-carved figure, as shown. There is a light coat of dust over all, especially in the unpolished recessed areas of the carving. I do not know what the stone is. As already mentioned, it is black, though there are a few small areas that have a faint reddish-brown tinge. Condition is good, there being an old, glued repair to a horizontal crack running just above the knees of the figure. I purchased this carved figure in 1986 at an estate auction ... morein Saratoga County, NY. It was found, just as the previous owner had left it, tucked between two layers of cotton inside in an old chocolates box. This is a possible Pre-Colombian Mayan Bowl with Warrior Handles. Bowl measures 10 inches across and 6.5 inches tall and is made of terracotta. The Clay Bottle depicts Pauahtun, God of Five Unlucky Days" also known as"God N" Period is estimated 400- 700 AD. What looks like an Arabic Numeral"8" is, I believe, part of his knotted headdress and more commonly found depicted sideways, not up and down. The headdress has been found, in other representations to resemble a knotted rope, a snake, and other similar shapes as expressed by a particular maker or commensurate with a particular cultural locale, etc. Measures 3 1/2" Tall. 2 3/4" Diameter from Nose to Nose of the faces, 2 3/8" Diameter Side to Side. Here is a Lovely Antique Mayan/Aztec Covered Container! It is Beautiful to Look at and Obviously Very Old! The Tail on the Lion has been broken off at some time in Antiquity and there is some wear on the underside of the lid and on the Front Right Hand Corner in the Direction the Lion is Facing from normal use! Antique Ancient Aztec Mayan Quartz Carved Artifact Set Pottery Pendant Mexico
Ancient Pottery This auction is for a really neat set of ancient pottery pieces that were collected by a local man back in the 1950s or so when he took one of several trips to Mexico. I would imagine these were found on ancient Mayan or Aztec sights but I can’t be sure because the man has since passed away. One of them is a quartz rock carved like a face and most of it is broken off at the back. It measures about 2" tall. The other piece is some kind of lid or pendant because it has a little hole at the back. Looks like a lizard or dog or something. Measures about 1¼" tall. Both are guaranteed old and authentic so if you find out they are indeed newer you can return them. But I had them looked at by a specialist in Central American artifacts and they appear true.
