They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. The pottery is often in the shape of a creature. Or has a human figure sitting or standing on a cuboid bottle. The shiny black finish of most Chimú pottery was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln, which prevented oxygen from reacting with the clay. This beautiful molded stirrup vessel measures 5 inches in width by 4 inches in depth by 7 inches in height(12.7 cm by 10.1 by 17.7 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with use and a Pre-Columbian dating. A buff colored two handled bowl from the Chancay culture of pre-Columbian Peru. Ca. 1000- 1500 AD. It was bought at the Skinner's Ethnographic Auction on 1/24/09. The vessel has a flattened ovoid shape, brown painted decoration around the upper body. One small chip to the lip( see my photo) Manganese deposits and burial accretion in various locations on the body. 4-3/4" tall, and 6" wide. Shipped with the photo card shown in the photo. Pectorals of this form were usually worn around the neck as an ornament. There are two holes on one side. The ceramic pectorals were worn by lower ranking Chancay indians. The powerful lords and rulers wore pectorals made out of precious metals. The star points are separated by arcs of approximately 30 degrees with two arc segments used for the attachment holes. Depicting two sitting feline or jaguar figures and three floating heads. Framed under glass, textile sandwiched between the glass and a black cardboard backing(not examined out of frame) Finely woven llama wool and probably part of a tunic front. The frame is old and is painted red with tiny yellow spots to match the jaguars. So it was probably framed in Peru near where it was found. HISTORY: Not much is known about the Chancay civilization which developed in the later part of the Inca empire. This culture emerged after the fall of the Wari civilization. Parts of the southern Chancay area were conquered by the Chimu in the early fifteenth century and in about 1450 A.D. the Incas were occupying both areas. It is believed that the Chancay had a centralized political structure. Forming a small regional state. Thus the Chancay culture declined in the fifteenth century to make way for the territorial expansion of the Inca Empire. Occupying the central coast coastal region of Peru. The piece shows a head at the top in a very strange expression. Almost like he is in pain. He has a very flat head and piercing eyes his mouth is either smirking or showing stress. Hi. I have a pair of solid gold Chavin earrings for auction. These ancient artifacts are from the Chavin culture of Peru. These awesome rare gold artifacts come in a felt lined wood case. The tag on the display says Chavin 1,000 years. The tag is wrong. The Chavin culture was mainly from 900 BC- 100 AD, making this 2,000 years old. Either way, these are incredible. They are solid stamped gold. They are very fragile. they display nicely, but they really should have a professional restoration because of the quality of the artifacts, and being gold.
