Hard fired under great heat with black patina such as is achieved with the Oaxaca method of firing with animal dung- to fuse black carbon to the surface layer of the red clay. 4) Provenance. A scarce finely modelled Pre-columbian Olmec(Mexico) pottery head of a baby. Its face painted with creamy slip and red pigment on the coiffure. It has the elongated upper half of the cranium with flattened forehead which was a artificial deformation of the skull done during early infancy as a marker of high social status. It's made of fired tan clay and in very good condition. The shell bead is 1 5/8 in. 4.0cm) long. The figure features punctate eyes. Large nose and mouth with a fancy headdress, one earspool and a nice necklace. It's from the Vera Cruz area of Mexico's southeastern coast. The bead is from a group found in a plowed up Huastec grave 50 years ago, probably from a necklace. They are mounted on a 4 1/2 by 6 1/4 in. picture frame backed by green felt and ready ready for display! These heads were once on full human clay figures but were broken off and cast into the fields to ensure crop fertility. Pre Columbian Clay figures. During the 1960's while living in Mexico I found these arrowheads. The location was at the base of a small extinct volcano close to. Cuatla. Morelos, Mexico. It is my understanding that the area was populated in Pre Aztec times by the Xochimilco tribe. The figures appear to be of a dog. A bird and a turtle? They are about 2" 5 cm) long on average. They were parts of a larger clay item which. I believe was a bowl with the figures being the handles.

This rare sculptural pottery female/mother figure measures approx 10" a tad under that) and approx 6" wide- from arm to arm. She weighs approx. 429.2 g or 15.140 oz. I feel she is in fabulous ancient condition with a"worm" hole in the back. A tiny shallow one on her chin and an intentional hole in front of her ear, which I believe might have once held an earring? On the back"heel" of her right foot there appears to be restoration to the pointed"heel" but she stands well and looks like a million bucks for her age!
