PRE COLUMBIAN ECUADOR POTTERY HEAD FRAGMENT JAMACOAQUE This is a very expressive piece of authentic Pre Columbian pottery with a very realistic face almost ... moreGrecian looking. Very heavily lidded eyes in a peaceful expression. The figure is wearing a headdress that is more like a cap over the hair with decorative earrings that have deep notches with some remaining red paint. Hopefully these are not the ears. It looks like button earrings in front and the figure has a nose ring and a lip plug. The back shows the remains of part of a necklace. It measures 2 1/2 inches high and will stand upright by itself as the circular base with a hole in it is flat. The head is hollow and has evidence of heavy black mineral deposits on one side. Basic clay color is a gray beige. There are also traces of red paint on the face. Keep in mind that this is not a burnished surface and the texture is rough and the close up photos are to show condition. At a regular viewing distance the head seems more normal looking and the condition is very good with very little damage and no repairs. It is from a private collection and is Jamacoaque culture.

Pre Columbian Costa Rica Diquis culture Tripod Jaguar Vessel Pot 800 -1520 AD
Hi! Up for auction is an ancient Costa Rican Diquis culture Tripod Jaguar vessel from the Chortega-Chocolate Guanacaste region. It’s dated 800 to 1100 AD on the original provenance(see picture) but I believe it could be later from 1000 to 1520 AD. This vessel could possibly be a Buenos Aires polychrome variant from the Diquis culture. Greater Chiriqui Period VI. From the pictures. This tripod is a beautiful vessel! The deep red color is really strong. The two glyphs on the sides are delightful and artistically executed! Each glyph represents an abstract jaguar and I don’t believe is written language. However, the showstopper is the adorable Jaguar head! What’s great is the jaguar head is actually a rattle! Provenance: This vessel is from the ex-Cotton Mather collection in Phoenix. AZ, USA. In the early 1970s, he imported it with a Costa Rican ... moregovernment permit before imports were prohibited. Therefore, this vessel is perfectly legal to buy and sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600. CHAPTER 14. As for the condition: This vessel has its condition issues. Even though the beautiful Jaguar head is perfect and still intact. The Jaguar’s tail is missing and has been since Pre-Columbian times. You can tell by the way the ageing is on it. What’s strange is how perfectly clean the missing tail was removed from the vessel. Right above the missing tail, there is a significant clip on the rim. Based on a top view of the vessel, the rim chip and the missing tail line up indicating the tail could have been ritually broken off on purpose and the rim was chipped in the process. As seen in the pics, there is a small hole on the back right side and the back tripod foot broke off but was re-attached. On closer inspection, the paint is in great condition but is slowly micro age cracking all over the vessel for over the thousands of years. This age cracking typically occurs from this region. Thanks for looking! SHIPPING INFO: For all domestic shipments. I ship via USPS Parcel Post. Shipping includes del

The Capulí ... morepreceded the Piartal and Tuza cultures in the archaeological record ranging from around 800 to 1500 CE. The Capulí culture left a strong record through its pottery. The Capulí had distinctive black on dark red pottery with rectilinear geometric designs. The anthropomorphic pottery statues of the Capulí can be striking. Women are depicted with a wrap that extends from the armpit to the ankle while men have loincloths and are often shown with an object such as a drum or animal. These figures are often called coqueros because they are depicted with wads of coca leaves in their mouths. Scholars have associated the figures with shamans and possible funerary rituals. Capulí goldwork is similar to that of later Ecuadoran and Columbian cultures. Smiths hammered and soldered high-carat gold into geometric and zoomorphic designs. Capulí graves contained a mix of grave goods including conch shells and stone axes. Some graves in Nariño are extremely deep. As much as 40m. A very nice example of Narino ceramics. AGE: Circa 800 AD- 1500 AD. Pre Spanish Colonial. Pre-Inca. CONDITION: Good condition.
