Very heavily lidded eyes in a peaceful expression. The figure is wearing a headdress that is more like a cap over the hair with decorative earrings that have deep notches with some remaining red paint. Hopefully these are not the ears. It looks like button earrings in front and the figure has a nose ring and a lip plug. The back shows the remains of part of a necklace. It measures 2 1/2 inches high and will stand upright by itself as the circular base with a hole in it is flat. The head is hollow and has evidence of heavy black mineral deposits on one side. Basic clay color is a gray beige. There are also traces of red paint on the face. Keep in mind that this is not a burnished surface and the texture is rough and the close up photos are to show condition. At a regular viewing distance the head seems more normal looking and the condition is very good with very little damage and no repairs. It is from a private collection and is Jamacoaque culture.

What’s strange is how perfectly clean the missing tail was removed from the vessel. Right above the missing tail, there is a significant clip on the rim. Based on a top view of the vessel, the rim chip and the missing tail line up indicating the tail could have been ritually broken off on purpose and the rim was chipped in the process. As seen in the pics, there is a small hole on the back right side and the back tripod foot broke off but was re-attached. On closer inspection, the paint is in great condition but is slowly micro age cracking all over the vessel for over the thousands of years. This age cracking typically occurs from this region. Depicting two sitting feline or jaguar figures and three floating heads. Framed under glass, textile sandwiched between the glass and a black cardboard backing(not examined out of frame) Finely woven llama wool and probably part of a tunic front. The frame is old and is painted red with tiny yellow spots to match the jaguars. So it was probably framed in Peru near where it was found. Black hardstone. Possibly basalt. This example is in the form of a standing figure. Standing on diminutive legs with the hands resting on the abdomen. The large head is stylized with abstract, simple features and the back undulating with subtle sculptural features and is without detail. This figure has a nice smooth and somewhat glossy patina on the protruding areas. The figure won’t stand by itself and was photographed using a thin wood rod to make it stand up. The culture is also called Balsas Culture because it is centered in the upper Balsas River drainage region. It is believed the Mezcala style emerged during the Pre-classic Period, between 700-200 B.C. and continued on into Classic Period to 650 A.D. Objects attributed to the the Mezcala Culture include figurines. Masks, small effigies of animals and objects, beads, pendants and earplug flares. They are carved from a variety of green, gray-green, gray and black color hardstones and jade. South American Pre-Columbian Lime Jar Nariño Zoomorphic Frog Effigy Highlands of Southern Columbia/ 800 AD ~ 1500 AD. click on the images for larger. High-definition photos. SIZE: Height- 2 7/8” 7.25 cm) Diameter- 3.25” 8.3 cm) DESCRIPTION: Small Pre-Columbian effigy jar from the Narino Culture of the Southern Highlands of Columbia. Circa 800 Ad ~ 1500 AD. This jar has a sculpted zoomorphic frog effigy straddling the top rim of the jar and it was probably used as a‘poporo’ lime container or similar purpose. The body of the ball-shaped vessel is decorated with negative geometric designs using wax resist. The small frog is nicely sculpted in a stylized. But detailed and lively manner. The wax resist‘bulls eyes’ are placed evenly around the side of the jar, between the amphibian’s legs to good effect. There is a tiny shallow chip to the ... moresurface. Just below the frog’s left front foot. This depression seems to have a tiny gold or pyrite piece in it, either an inclusion in the clay, or a piece used to fill the hole. A very nice example of Narino ceramics. AGE: Circa 800 AD- 1500 AD. Pre Spanish Colonial. Pre-Inca. CONDITION: Good condition.
