Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a Pre-Columbian terracotta Standing Female Figure. From the Colima culture, ... moreWest Mexico. The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City. The iconography of this form is comprised of a stylized bird head, a turtle-like body visible from the front with human legs on the backside perhaps signifying a metaphor for dreams which often assume surreal transitional states. In addition to this complex symbolism, the piece is a wonderful examplar of Colima technique and stylings. Origin:Mexico Circa: 400 AD to 600AD Dimensions: 9" long x 4 1/2" wide x 4 high Condition: Superb. With the usual very minor losses. No repairs. Dogs were revered and respected in ancient Mexico's Indian culture. The"Colima Dog. a distant relative of the Mexican Hairless and the Chihuahua, may have been a pet, or it may have been fattened for eating- or both! Among the early colonial immigrants, a Jesuit Priest, Sahagún, examined and wrote of the things concerning the"new" lands of America. Regarding these dogs of Colima, which are generally portrayed as quite fat, even grotesquely so, but many of which have happy faces, he says, The dogs of this land have four names, called: Chichi, Itzcuintli, Xochiocoyotl, Tetlamin; and also tehuizotl… They raise other dogs that they call Xoloitzcuintli with no hair at ... moreall… There are other dogs that are called tlalchichi, short and round, that are very good to eat" It is believed that the hairless dogs. The Xoloitzcuintli, represented the god Xolotl, who had the task of guiding the dead on their journey to"Mictlan, that is, the Spirit World. The Aztecs believed that in order for the souls of the dead to reach"Mictlan" they had to cross the black river"Apanoayan" as well as overcoming other obstacles, and these hairless Xoloitzcuintlis had the task of guiding their human masters across this river, along with helping them overcome all the other difficulties on the journey. It is said that these red-colored dogs became the chosen guide because for a black dog to the perform the task, it was found to be difficult to distinguishing its black shape on a black river, in the murky underworld. When a white dog was approached as a substitute, that dog refused because it didn't want its coat soiled by the dark waters. The red dog then stepped up to the task and performed it well. Mint. Pristine, museum quality. 4) Provenance. I bought this sculpture in 1967 from a source I trusted who I met in the home of my friend Kurt Stavenhagen in Mexico City when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins at Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Shipping. Pre-Columbian Colima Carved Stone Animal Head
This auction is for a rare and interesting Pre-Columbian Colima carved stone animal head. Possibly representing a Tapir(American native pig) circa 200 B.C. 200 A.D. Colima carved stone objects are rare. The carving most likely depicts the head of a Tapir. Which is a type of pig/hog native to the ancient Americas. The carving is quite detailed and animated, exhibiting a great deal of skill on the part of the ancient maker. Measures about 2 3/4" tall, made from a hard greenish colored stone known from the region, similar to the kind of stone that Mezcala stone figures were made from in nearby regions. Condition: Fragmentary. Possibly broken at the neck, although it may have been intentionally made this way, with the neck showing unfinished/rough stone material. Minor abrasions, scuffs, chipping, weathering and wear, with a small amount ... moreof adhesive residue from an old collection sticker on one side, that can probably be removed with acetone. Provenance: Found by Lynn Langdon in Mexico between the 1940's to early 1960's. Colima. Large Pre-Columbian Colima Zoomorphic Incense Cover, Ancient West Mexico
A rare and fascinating zoomorphic incense cover from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. This piece measures impressively at approximately 10" long by about 7 1/2" wide and about 6" tall. The form of the piece is complex. The handle appears to have been formed to represent the arched or undulating body of a lizard or snake, resting atop the dome-like body of the cover. The cover body features multiple rib-like ridges, perhaps meant to imply that the zoomorph is sitting atop a desert mound(with the ridges perhaps representing an eroded and blown sand landscape) Three feet on the bottom of the dome allow for this to function as a cover over a burnt offering(possibly copal incense) ensuring sufficient air can keep the substance smoldering, while the ... moredome-like lid allows for the area to retain heat sufficient to keep burning. Vessels of this type are well-documented in archaeological finds from this region, attributed to this function. Condition: Body is intact. With a repair at the neck of the head(with restoration over the break) and loss of the tail. Otherwise minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. Sediment and mineral deposits remain, indicative of an ancient piece. The underside exhibits staining from the burning of incense beneath this cover. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Personally collected by Langdon in West Mexico between the 1940's- 1960's.
Pre-Columbian Colima Orangeware Olla, Ancient West Mexico
An attractive small orangeware olla from Pre-Columbian West Mexico. Circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This piece measures about 3 1/2" wide by about 2 3/4" tall, and is likely attributed to the ancient Colima culture of West Mexico. The body features knob-like protrusions around the center of the exterior, and exhibits a lovely form. Condition: Intact and in original as-found condition. With minor chipping, abrasions weathering and wear. There is about a 3/4" long trowel or shovel impact loss line on the bottom of one side, with stable stress lines extending from that point of contact. Otherwise, sediment and mineral deposits indicative of an ancient piece. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection. Personally collected by Langdon in West Mexico between the 1940's- 1960's.

This is one of MANY important auction this week! Each approximately 3" inches length About Colima( Wikipedia) The state was home to a number of pre-Hispanic cultures as part of Western Mexico. Archeological evidence dates human occupation of the area as far back as 1500 BCE. With sites here contemporary with San Lorenzo on the Gulf Coast and Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico. One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices era, which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements that characterize the pre-Hispanic ... morepeoples of Colima appear, including shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called rojo bruñido, or burnished red. The next phase. Called Comala and centered on a site of the same name, was from around 100 to 600 CE. Comala people perfected burnished red pottery and created representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the fattened dogs. The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. The Chanal site was active from the 6th to the 15th centuries and was the main culture for the Colima area. Belonging to this culture was a number of smaller sites and most of the ones known and explored to date. After Chanal the largest related site is La Campana but most contain pyramidal bases and plazas with structures often containing rounded edges. Images of Huehueteotl and Tlaloc appear with this culture. Which may indicate the origins of the cultures that ultimately settled central Mexico. There is one other site called Periquillo. Which indicates one late migration into Colimas around the 10th century from the north. At
