Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. I am not an expert. But I believe this to be pre-Columbian or Anazazi in origin. I purchased it today from an estate sale in Colorado. It is quite large- 44" in circumference, 13" high with a 9" mouth and approx 15" diameter. It is plain without ornamentation, with brown and blackened patina and lighter on the rounded bottom. Pre Columbian Ceramic Warrior Effigy on Wood Stand ~ Terracotta Idol or Figure
Here we have a really neat Pre Columbian ceramic warrior effigy on a wood stand. This small warrior effigy sits 6 1/2" tall on its stand. 3 3/4" wide and 1 3/4" deep. It was crudely made out of terracotta pottery and measures 5 1/4" tall off of the stand. There is a fracture with an old repair where it is inserted onto the pedestal. The base measures 1 3/4" square and on the back is an old information or auction label. This is really neat little effigy figure with a wood pedestal and it make a wonderful addition to any collection. Pre-Columbian ceramic fertility figure Morelia. Michoacan-Mexico undetermined age Here's a rare and unusual archeological item: a ceramic fertility figure stated to be from the city of Morelia in the Michoacan state of Mexico from the Tarascan Indians in the area. Michoacan is the state just west of Mexico City. The figure has been mounted to a wooden-framed crushed velvet-covered board with this label on the back: Morelia. Michoacan-Mexico A Tarascan Indian fertility symbol. Attested to be between 2 and 3 thou- sand years old. Research on this says that archaic hunter-gatherers throughout Mesoamerica had progressed to simple farming societies by 1000 BCE. They had at least a Neolithic level of knowledge about ceramics. So producing something like this was not impossible. However, the Tarascan Indians did not arrive in the Guayangareo ... moreValley(where Morelia is) until the 12th century- still 400 years before the Spanish conquest of that area. So more realistically, this could have been made by archaic peoples from that valley, instead of by the Tarascan Indians that came centuries later. Or, alternatively, it could have been made by the Tarascan's ancestors and simply brought along with them by the shaman when they migrated(powerful totems and symbols would be passed on to future generations) Impossible to tell either way. The figure does have an archaic look to it. Not as sophisticated as the ceramics of the later Mesoamerican cultures. It is anthropomorphic and definitely female-inspired, with the added necklace and stylized breasts. The head has stylized hair and large earrings. It looks like at one time there may have been more to the nose area- hard to tell. It does have a nice general patina commensurate with something purportedly that old. There seems to be residual reddish pigment under part of the necklace, so it may at one time had a painted exterior. There is a significant chip out of the top of the head, and one off the end of the left arm, along with a small chip off the end of the left leg. The
