Ancient Pre Columbian Chimu Culture Pottery Ox Bottle - 1100 AD
A wonderful ancient Peruvian Chimu culture effigy bottle. Dating to approximately 1100-1400 A.D. An attractive burnished bottle. Of globular form, with rounded base. A moulded figure of an ox sits in rest atop the bottle with a cylindrical spout emerging from the beast's back. The Chimu are primarily known for their distinctive black glazed pottery. Strongly influenced by their predecessors, the Moche. Examples of their enchanting ceramics can be found on display in the world's top museums. The Chimu ruled much of the coast around their capital of Chan Chan in northern Peru until conquered by the Inca in the fifteenth century. Ancient Peruvians left no written records, thus their material remains are the only existing link to this long gone and intriguing ancient people. Important Ancient Pre-Columbian Jade Beads and Pendants (51) – Museum Quality
This auction is for an important collection of Pre-Columbian jade beads. Including several pendants. The beads are arranged on the string in a graduated order, with the largest beads and pendants closer to the center of the string. This string has a total of 51 beads, 13 of which are pendants, the non-pendant beads ranging in size from 11mm to 19mm. The large disk-shaped pendant at the center is 32mm in diameter. These are museum quality beads, and I recently acquired them from a world-class local estate collection. They are as found, with two tags on the string. The newer white tag is unmarked, the old toned and torn tag(which looks to be an antique itself) has a notation in fountain pen ink on it. Since the tag is half lost, the notation is incomplete, but on it, the beads are identified as Navajo. Please see the pictures. This item will ... morebe shipped Registered Mail. A fine. Large Protoclassic burnished terracotta Colima dog figure, from the Colima culture, dating to approximately 200 BC- 200 AD. Exhibiting a beautiful dark red colour. The plump beast stands on squat. Bent legs, with large round pot-belly, short, erect tail, pricked ears and exposed teeth. The head of the creature fashioned into a spout with everted lip, revealing the piece to be a particularly elaborate vessel. The enigmatic Colima dog figures were produced in what is now Mexico from the 3rd Century BC. Dogs were considered to be useful on one's inevitable journey to the underworld and were therefore placed with the deceased as trusty companions. Length: 13 inches. I do not have authentication for it but it is a piece that was made by my father who had a collection of precious and semi precious beads as well as pre Columbian beads. I believe these beads are carnelian and jadeite and the center bead is also Pre Columbian. It will not stand by itself and is supported for the photos. Iti s missing an arm. Lower leg and foot and another foot. or whatever it had at the ends of the legs) The arm is complete with no hand just a rounded structure. Ears and nose are abnormally large with the head sloping backwards at an angle. Minute reflective crystaline structures in the clay and dark areas that seem to be manganese deposits. There is a slight chip on the back of the head. This is an authentic figure and not a reproduction and I have had it for over 40 years. Figure would look well mounted and standing upright.

Some have aritual significance also and this necklace seems to have a baby wrapped in a blanket hanging from the bottom. I do not know if this was the original arrangement or not as it has been restrung on knotted modern black cord with the"baby" hanging from mono filament loop. This 19 inch necklace is composed of 24 pottery clay spindle whorls from anient Ecuador. It is from a private collection and the owner purchased it in Ecuador in this condition many years ago. The necklace was in with La Tolita fragments 300 B.C. 500 A.D. and some Jamacoaque fragments 500 A.D. to 1000 A.D. so I cannot positivitely identify the culture. The whorls have been strung mostly alternating bell shaped ... moreand round disks some with incised designs and a few(2) ball shaped whorls. Many bell shaped whorls have original red pigment with the larger ones measuring 1 1/8 inch wide and one at 1 1/4 inches wide. About 7 have damage and are chipped but retain their original shape and I have tried to picture some. The remainiing 17 are in excellent condition considering the age with no or very little visible damage. The"baby" as I call it measures 3 inches long and is smooth on the back. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
A large and imposing ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a warrior. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The standing male figure is shown naked. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a series of arm rings, prominent belt and pointed cap. Supported on enormous claw-like feet, the broad, square torso imbues him with the physical makeup of a warrior. One arm is raised brandishing a club, the other extended slightly forward and bent at the elbow, holding a small shield. The head is marked by sunken almond eyes, a prominent nose and parted lips revealing large grinding teeth. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings, a painted necklace is also present. The staring eyes are disturbing and discordant. Yet almost impossible to tear away from. An overpowering wrath bleeds from the very fabric of ... morethis striking warrior. There is something visceral in his bearing, defying reason, he appears in a seemingly trance-like fury, speaking to a very ancient place inside our psyche. Nayarit figures form part of the mysterious shaft tomb culture of ancient western Mexico. Displaying all aspects ancient life, from ritual ceremonies to grand feasts, warriors to simple family scenes. While the subject matter was relatively consistent throughout the entire region, style distinctions are present. This figure is of Nayarit's Ixtlán del Río style, the westernmost of all Nayarit sites, which is characterized by highly stylized facial features and thick, stocky limbs. Little is known about ancient Nayarit life beyond these enigmatic figures and the society itself remains a mystery. The discordant facial expressions of figures such as this have in some quarters been advanced as evidence of shamanism. Haunting and intense. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Llama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. A charming piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration to right hind quarter. It has been perforated in the middle of the back during antiquity.
