Antique framed 16th century Latin music sheet on vellum
This is a framed music sheet in Latin from the 16 th century. The music is handwritten in black and red on both sides of the vellum. The sheet itself is 14 ¾ inches by 19 ½ inches. It is in a wood frame that is 17 ½ by 21 ½ inches. The corner of the music has been torn off and there is some soiling. There are no other issues. This piece does come in a frame. You are bidding on a very rare leaf of musical score and Latin/Psalms/ Biblical lyrics. Hand- painted in black and red with great designs. Initials and intricate details. INCLUDING A RARE MINIATURE, BEING A GOLDEN INITIAL W ITH FRUIT AND FLORAL DESIGNS AROUND IT. C1450- 1600. Manuscript musical score and Latin lyrics on well aged vellum; in red and black ink with color highlights to illuminated letters. 24" x 16.5" Sight condition overall very nice. With some fading and rubbing off of paint to verso, some very light staining, a few small holes and edge chips, and some fading, as shown. Undated. But main text and vellum are ancient and carry characteristics of the late 15th to early 17th century, probably from an Italian antiphonary. Miniature in nice shape. Although lightly rubbed of paint, although gold is SHINING! Bifolium from an Antiphonal or Breviary likely from the 17th century. Latin. On heavy vellum. Probably European, but precise origin and age unknown. 5-line staffs. Each leaf approximately 14" x 20" Open bifolium size: 14" x 27" Written both recto and verso. Vellum has some dark discoloration at the edges. Creasing at the lower right corner of both leaves and binding traces at the fold. Interior pages slightly less bright than outer pages. Each page has 7 lines of musical notation and 7 lines of test in a Gothic script. Rubricated initials in blue and red with calligraphic scroll work in red and purple. An enormous antique ink and colour liturgical manuscript in Latin on vellum. Probably from a Continental scriptorium from the 16th century although I cannot be sure about this date as I am not used to selling items as old as this so it might be later! Measuring a huge 32 x 22 inches. Has condition issues as seen in the images. There are a couple of small tears to the edges and some stitched repairs. There is wrinkling and toning and discolouration and one side is a darker colour than the other. The script is in a Monastic gothic hand and the music consists of six staves of four-lines each. Musical staves are in red ink with notes and text in black ink. The larger and more decorative initials are in red or red and black. A Responsorial is any psalm, canticle, or other sacred music which is recited or sung after a reading during the church service. Customarily, this occurs with a cantor or small group singing verses while the whole choir or congregation responds with a refrain. Traditionally, Responsorials are sung in Gregorian Chant. Antique Sheet Music Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum Roman Catholic
This is an antique piece of sheet music on vellum(animal hide) and has been calligraphed in black and red ink. It's double sided and both sides can be seen easily in the double-sided frame that has clear glass on both sides. I'm no expert in historical or antique books. Music, or other printing so the best I can tell you about this is that such items are often Italian but can be from virtually any European country. Also, it is clear that this is all done painstakingly by hand. It looks like it is one page taken out of a large book of such manuscripts. Sadly. I have trouble interpreting a few of the letters so I haven't even tried to do a Google translation from the original Latin to anything else. Maybe a bidder out there is more astute in this regard than me and can provide me with a translation to share with the bidding public. ... moreIt is in very nice condition and the manuscript measures out at approximately 21 inches by 15.5 inches. The frame is just a little wider and taller. Although the frame is clearly intended to be hung on the wall. It can be easily picked up so that the reverse side can also be viewed. An elegant antique representation of what I suspect is Roman Catholic. Such manuscripts were made as far back as the mid 1400's and as recent as the 1700's as far as I can gather. From other examples I've found online my guess is that this piece was made between the 1600's and 1700's. In particular, I like the artistic rendering of very large capital letters as you can see in the photos in this auction. Hand- painted in black and red with precise intricate Latin lettering, circa late 1400s-early 1500s. Manuscript 5-LINE musical score and Latin lettered lyrics.
