Language: latin Format: Other Binding type: Unbound Leaves Condition: Good- perfect text. Loose binding Pages: Handwritten pages: 0 White pages: 0 Item ... morecode: 51-051214MON- E Very rare Antiphonary Fragment datable around XVth Century. The manuscript is a little part of a huge book of Gregorian Chants. And the songs are the Glory and the Kyrie Eleison. On both sides we can appreciate some capital letters illuminated, in light blue and red ink, as it was used to be from the Middle Age till the Renaissance. The Manuscript is on very beautiful clean and very clear vellum. This means that this Antiphonary was a supply of a very important church or Cathedral. As unfortunately happens. Antiphonaries that arrive to our days are mostly fragmented, as due to the high quality of the vellu, they were used in Renaissance to bind books. Size: 9.5"x6,3/4" A real fragment of religious history that comes to our days. I mportant to know: buying a manuscript or an autograph is not a purchase. But an investment. These items keep and increase their value year by year. Very good preservation status considering the age. Some ink removed but the remaining shadow is still perfectly legible. Illuminated-Hand Painted Vellum Coat of Arms Heraldry Hennessy Irish Calligraphy
Hand painted heraldry Coat of Arms of Hennessy. Beautiful crisp painting of great detail on calf vellum. This is not a modern piece as there is some age to the piece particularly around borders where it was framed some time ago. But it is also not medieval, as the vellum is prestine(except for minor nick to the bottom) and the colors are extremely vivid and crisp. There is a bit of tape residue which can only be seen on reverse. My photo does not due justice to the exceptional detail and quality of the hand penned calligraphy with lluminated O and the extremely fine painting of the coat of arms.which includes swags, arrows, antlers, tassels, a shield and a deer. The calligraphy reads; OhAonghusu. I.e. decendant of Aonghus or Angus. The principal seat of this name was located near the town of Rilbeggan and the hill of Croghan, their territory ... morebeing chiefly in the northern part of the County Offaly, where they shared with O'Holohan the lordship of Clan Cholgain; a branch of this was located nearer to Dublin, the head of it being chief of Gailenga Beg on the north side of the River Liffey on the Borders of Counties Meath and Dublin. The latter was displaced by the Anglo Norman Invasion. The Offaly O'Hennessys spread Tipperary and Nare in the Latter county they are now called Henchy formerly Hensly. Nicholas O'Hennessy, the Cistercian Bishop of Waterford and Lismore from 1480-1482. It is also rather large in scale approx 10" x 14" A wonderful piece of illumination. Calligraphy as well as heraldry. This is a no reserve auction. So happy bidding!

Illuminated on uterine semi-translucent vellum, s.d. s.l. likely late 19th century, Eastern Europe. Approx. 13 x 8 cm(exc.velvet) Affixed on verso with old masking tape. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE"Shivviti the opening word. In Hebrew, of the verse: I have set the Lord always before me" Ps. 16:8) As a part of the daily prayer, the word became a cliche for Jewish devotion and common language. During the 18th and 19th centuries, and up to the present a votive tablet called"Shivviti, principally containing the above verse, was put up in front of those praying in the synagogue. These synagogue plaques contain other verses, concerning the Law and the Torah. Most ... moreof them were profusely decorated in shapes and colors. The most common motifs of decoration were the seven-branched menorah of the Temple, and symbolic buildings representing different"Holy Places" in Erez Israel, such as Jerusalem or the tombs of sages and righteous men. Some are decorated with animals or mythical beasts and persons. Others serve as amulets, containing magical symbols, such as the Magen David, and magical verses. Most of the Shivviti plaques derive from Eastern Europe in the 19th century. There are, however, some plaques which come from North Africa, mainly from Morocco. highbeam.com/doc/1G2-2587518366.html]

Vellum Leaf from A Book Of Hours. 15th Cent. Illuminated/Gold Initials. Framed This auction is for a small late 15th century velum manuscript leaf from a Book of Hours. I purchased it from a dealer many years ago and had it framed between two sheets of UV glass so that I can view both sides of the somewhat translucent page. Which is apparent in the photos(you can see the writing showing through from the opposite side, especially in one of the photos when I held the frame up to a window and took the shot. The frame, a decorative frame with gold highlights, dimensions are approximately 13" x 11" The framer's points and unfinished frame are visible on the obverse side. 15th c. BOOK OF HOURS LEAF Illuminated manuscript GORGEOUS GOLD Vellum
15th Century Book of hours leaf. Gorgeous illumination with some darkening on the top and bottom edges probably from being framed or taped at sometime. Otherwise a really nice example. This is a fair price for a leaf like this and do not let the other sellers on ebay make you pay more. BUY THIS LEAF FOR A STEAL HERE! Leaf measures 6 by 4 3/8 inches. The book of hours has its ultimate origin in the Psalter. Which monks and nuns were required to recite. By the 12th century this had developed into the breviary, with weekly cycles of psalms, prayers, hymns, antiphons, and readings which changed with the liturgical season. Eventually a selection of texts was produced in much shorter volumes and came to be called a book of hours. Many books of hours were made for women. There is some evidence that they were sometimes given as a wedding present ... morefrom a husband to his bride. Frequently they were passed down through the family. As recorded in wills. Although the most heavily illuminated books of hours were enormously expensive. A small book with little or no illumination was affordable much more widely, and increasingly so during the 15th century. The earliest surviving English example was apparently written for a laywoman living in or near Oxford in about 1240. It is smaller than a modern paperback but heavily illuminated with major initials, but no full-page miniatures. By the 15th century, there are also examples of servants owning their own Books of Hours. In a court case from 1500, a pauper woman is accused of stealing a domestic servant's prayerbook. Very rarely the books included prayers specifically composed for their owners. But more often the texts are adapted to their tastes or sex, including the inclusion of their names in prayers. Some include images depicting their owners, and some their coats of arms. These, together with the choice of saints commemorated in the calendar and suffrages, are the main clues for the identity of the first owner. By the 15th century. Various stationer's shops mass-produced

medieval gothic 1200 illuminated manuscript miniature painting vellum 13th
17 chapter initials in burnished gold or blue accompanied by alternating blue or red penwork. Penworks within the lay-out. Various fine decorative line-fillers in gold, red and blue, including dog, a dragon and a armed mermaid, refined linear line-fillers. Since the end of the 1960s several folia from a Psalter. Formerly in the collection of the late Astor Rosenbaum have surfaced. The present page undoubtedly belonged to this important 13th century Psalter. Of which illuminated pages were sold a.o. for auction at Sotheby's, London(25 April 1983, lot 69, sold to Quaritch) also lot 14, Dec. 1991, lot 6 in Dec.1992, another was offered for sale at Maggs( cat. 1340, No. 4) Three other leaves were present in the exhibition on private prayerbooks in Cologne. Schnüttgen Museum, 1987, No. 8. In a recent sale in London another leaf, fol. ... more193, was sold at Sotheby's, 2003, lot. 13. The origin of the Psalter is here convincingly ascribed to England. Rather than to Flanders, due to the inclusion of a scene from the life of St. Thomas Becket on one of the leaves sold at auction in 1991, the greater similarity with line-fillers found in two Psalters from Worcester(in Cambridge and Krivoklït Castle) the"Salvin Hours" London, British Lib. and the Windmill Psalter(New York, Pierpont Morgan Lib. further enhances an English origin.
