It is written in a Dead Latin Langauge but at one time I had it partly translated but I forgot what it said. I know not very bright on my part. But I do remember that it is a plainsong about the apostle James. It is hand done on vellum. It is 2 sided the front is the begining of the song and the back is the end. It is framed in heavy glass on both sides there are 2 screws with just and old cord hooked on it to hang it from but it works. Pages are about 24 by 17. Hand painted heraldry Coat of Arms of Hennessy. Beautiful crisp painting of great detail on calf vellum. This is not a modern piece as there is some age to the piece particularly around borders where it was framed some time ago. But it is also not medieval, as the vellum is prestine(except for minor nick to the bottom) and the colors are extremely vivid and crisp. There is a bit of tape residue which can only be seen on reverse. My photo does not due justice to the exceptional detail and quality of the hand penned calligraphy with lluminated O and the extremely fine painting of the coat of arms.which includes swags, arrows, antlers, tassels, a shield and a deer. The calligraphy reads; OhAonghusu. I.e. decendant of Aonghus or Angus. Recto of the leaf was once mounted with some paper still attached. There are several small holes in the body of the leaf. Somewhat faded with a few small stains and creases. I purchased it from a dealer many years ago and had it framed between two sheets of UV glass so that I can view both sides of the somewhat translucent page. Which is apparent in the photos(you can see the writing showing through from the opposite side, especially in one of the photos when I held the frame up to a window and took the shot. The frame, a decorative frame with gold highlights, dimensions are approximately 13" x 11" The framer's points and unfinished frame are visible on the obverse side. The book of hours has its ultimate origin in the Psalter. Which monks and nuns were required to recite. By the 12th century this had developed into the breviary, with weekly cycles of psalms, prayers, hymns, antiphons, and readings which changed with the liturgical season. Eventually a selection of texts was produced in much shorter volumes and came to be called a book of hours. Many books of hours were made for women. Each fragment measures roughly 1.75" x 2.5" and 2.25" x 3.75" With handwritten red and black letter font text to both sides, as shown with a few attractive illuminated letters. Probably Italian, c1300s. Some soiling, as shown, with a few instances of tattering, paper covering still remaining(mostly to backs) chipping and soiling. Extracted from a mid 1500s religious work folio printed in Venice. Great chance to own 2 pieces of a 500+ year old manuscript with a few blue and red flourished and illuminated letters! Formerly in the collection of the late Astor Rosenbaum have surfaced. The present page undoubtedly belonged to this important 13th century Psalter. Of which illuminated pages were sold a.o. for auction at Sotheby's, London(25 April 1983, lot 69, sold to Quaritch) also lot 14, Dec. 1991, lot 6 in Dec.1992, another was offered for sale at Maggs( cat. 1340, No. 4) Three other leaves were present in the exhibition on private prayerbooks in Cologne. Schnüttgen Museum, 1987, No. 8. In a recent sale in London another leaf, fol. ... more193, was sold at Sotheby's, 2003, lot. 13. The origin of the Psalter is here convincingly ascribed to England. Large medieval Miniature circa 1500. Flanders, 11.5 x 8.5 cm representing Saint John the Apostle to Patmos. Dressed in a loose tunic with pronounced wrinkles. He is sitting on a small island, writing on a scroll put on his knees, the letters"INSO. On a neighboring island, his symbol the crowned eagle advanced towards him, wings deployed holding in its beak the inkwell and pen holder. In the background rise high rocks and a large curved castle in a water landscape. Former collection Daniel Burckhardt-Wildt(1752-1819) Industrial business man in Basel(Switzerland) watercolorist, printmaker and art collector. This miniature was part of an album(f.10) of miniatures that he acquired from another painter and art collector Peter Birmann. Basel(1758-1844) P. Birmann made many trips to Paris from 1795 to buy works of art(mostly paintings, prints, ... moredrawings, bronzes, marbles) and acquired this album in Paris in 1796. Other miniatures composing this album were sold at Sotheby's April 25. 1983 in London. P.
