Esquire) Two hundred + Sixty five pounds Sixteen shillings lawful money. Which I promise safely to deliver to John Choate Esq. at Albany for the Service of the Expedition to Crown Point on account of the Massachusetts Bay Government. Stephen Gunn(signed) STEPHEN GUNN(1726– 1759) was a native of Westfield. Massachusetts and a CAPTAIN ... moreof a militia company during the French and Indian War. There is a financial record of him being compensated by the Massachusetts Council on January 19th 1757. in full for his Service and Expenses” in conveying five French prisoners(reportedly captured at the siege of Crown Point) from Sheffield(MA) to the gaol(jail) in Springfield(MA) The following year he is said to have transported prisoners from Great Barrington to Springfield. GUNN died of smallpox on November 11th 1759, at the age of 33. Of his death, the“Boston Evening Post” newspaper published the following- One Day last Week, died at Sheffield, of the Small Pox, Mr. Stephen Gunn. Who has been employed by this Government the Summer past, as one of the Couriers between this Place and Albany” One is left to wonder. If he contracted small pox as a result of his military service. The law is signed Roland, so the temporal context of the law is quite interesting. Roland was Jean-Marie Roland, de la Platiere(1734-1793) husband of Madame Roland, whose ideas were instrumental to the start of the French ... moreRevolution. Roland was a Girondinist. When the Girondins came into power, he was appointed Minister of the Interior on March the 23rd, 1792, but was dismissed from his position after challenging a veto by King Louis XVI, who despite the Revolution was still permitted to function as a sovereign. Rolands dismissal resulted in an insurrection that saw Roland re-instated as Minister of the Interior on August the 10th and King Louis arrested on August the 13th. So this law would have been one of the first that was not subject to veto by the King. The document is four pages long and measures 7 1/4 by 9 1/4 closed. It has some brown patina and marking as well as minor creasing, but this is to be expected of a piece that is 220 years old. 1757 FRENCH + INDIAN WAR Signed Document- SOLDIERS Raised From Colonel Tyng’s Regiment- Conducted from CHELMSFORD to WORCESTER- FRENCH + INDIAN WAR signed document from 1757– a WARRANT from the Massachusetts COMMITTEE OF WAR to pay Deacon(Captain) Ephraim Spaulding of Chelmsford(MA) for the expense of raising and subsisting soldiers out of Colonel Tyng’s Regiment to support the Crown Point Expedition. These soldiers were likely from Chelmsford. Deacon Spaulding’s home town, and were enlisted members of Colonel Tyng’s Regiment. John Osborne has SIGNED along the bottom of the document, on behalf of the Committee of War. There are some written sources indicating that CAPTAIN Ephraim Spaulding had been ordered by Colonel Eleazer Tyng to impress men into his Majesty's service during the CROWN POINT EXPEDITIONS of 1755 and 1756. To address ... morea deficiency of men in his regiment. These men would then typically march to Worcester(MA) where they would await further orders. Captain Spaulding seems to have taken part in these expeditions to the Lake George area north of Albany, and there is also a report that Spaulding was listed among the sick and wounded there.
