1510 LIVES OF ROMAN EMPERORS Suetonius POST INCUNABLE Incunabula
Suetonius Tranquillus(Gaius)C. Suetonii Tranquilli De Vita Caesarum. Florence 1510, A1-Z3 COMPLETE. 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Suetonius(ca. 69/75- after 130) Was an equestrian and a historian during the Roman Empire. His most important surviving work is this set of biographies on the lives of twelve successive Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar until Domitian, entitled De Vita Caesarum. Other works by Suetonius concern the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. A few of these books have partially survived, but many are entirely lost.Suetonius was a close friend to Senator and letter-writer Pliny the Younger. Pliny describes him as'quiet and studious, a man dedicated to writing' Through Pliny, Suetonius came into favour with Trajan and Hadrian. Under Trajan ... morehe served as secretary of studies(precise functions are uncertain) and director of Imperial archives. Under Hadrian, he became the Emperor's secretary. In 122, Hadrian dismissed him for disrespectful behaviour towards Empress Vibia Sabina. Suetonius may have later regained imperial favor under Hadrian and returned to his position. The Twelve Caesars' Probably written in Hadrian's time, is a collective biography of the Roman Empire's first emperors. The book was dedicated to Suetonius' friend Gaius Septicius Clarus, a prefect of the Praetorian Guard in 119. The work tells the tale of each Caesar's life according to a set formula: the descriptions of appearance, omens, family history, quotes, and then a history, often full of spicy, erotic, often pornographic, shocking and cruel details, are given in a consistent order for each Caesar. Book is in good condition for its age with binding being rubbed and worn and especially to the spine. Hinges are cracked and delicate but holding. Pages have some dog earing to 15 leaves. Foxing to the margins on last half of the book. A spill on one page as pictured. Post Incubanle printings of this work never seen for unde

A very rare and typographically superb Post Incunable collection of Biblical commentary by Cardinal Thomas de Vio Catejan. Cajetan(1469–1534) Cardinal, arch-bishop and general of the Dominicans is certainly the most important Catholic theologian of Reformation times. As a Church politician he was as influental in the conflict with Luther(whom he examined in Augsburg in 1518) and in the reform movement for the renewal of the Papacy as in his teaching as a professor of theology and philosophy. Among his writings, his great commentaries are especially noteworthy: the Biblical expositions which grew out of his critical study of Humanism as ... morewell as his expositions of Thomas Aquinas"Summa Theologiae" which exerted great influence on the development of modern theology. Collection printed in Rome. With two parts, the first dated 1533, the second, 1542. Both parts with beautiful woodcut borders on title pages. Varying typography and intricate and striking woodcut initials, as well as printers vignettes at both recto colophon pages of Blado's device. Also includes a full page illustration on II-2 recto.
