Antique 19th C. Islamic Art Mamluk Brass and Silver Koran Quran Box Sunduq
A fine and well made example of a 19th C. Egyptian Cairoware silver and brass overlaid koran box. The silver Kufic calligraphy is additionally etched over. Dimensions: 9"x4.5"x2" Kufic is the oldest calligraphic form of the various Arabic scripts and consists of a modified form of the old Nabataean script. Its name is derived from the city of Kufa. Iraq, although it was known in Mesopotamia at least 100 years before the foundation of Kufa. At the time of the emergence of Islam, Kufa, established in 18 AH(= 639 AD) by order of Omar bin al-Khattab) this type of script was already in use in various parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Size approximately 11 inches x 7 inches This Safavid-era manuscript consists in a full copy of the Quran with illumination. The colophon states that the work was completed by the scribe'Abd al-Jabbar b. Abd al-Aziz on Wednesday the 22nd of Rajab. 1064(the 8th of June, 1654) Folios 1r and 2v contain fine illumination in gold and lapis lazuli with touches of malachite(light green) and red. The bottom of the second folio seems to have been cut at some point, as its lower margin has been greatly reduced. When the manuscript was placed in its current binding, these first two illuminated folios were unfortunately not aligned properly, which detracts somewhat from the symmetry of the opening pages. The verses are divided by small golden and polychrome rosettes. This is a lovely antique hand illuminated page from an 18th century Koran. The whole page measures 12 7/8" x 8 1/2" The actual block of text and illustration measures 2 3/4" x 5 1/4" It is an intricate piece with lovely colors and lots of gilt. There is a slight water smudge on the upper left part of the text. My aunt bought this on one of her travels. I bought this folding Koran stand at the souk in Ghardaia in north central Algeria. In the Sahara Desert, in 1975. Ghardaia is one of the five hill top Mozabite Tribal cities built over a thousand years ago. Each arm of the stand is 26 inches long and the stand is 16 inches high when opened to hold the Koran. This stand has definately been used for a long time. One arm of the stand has cracked and then crudely patched with small pieces of tin. Painted designs sre slightly faded but still beautiful. Delightful Antique Miniature Koran with Original Brass Book Box
Here on offer is a delightful antique miniature Koran with its original brass book box. This wonderful little book has burgundy leatherette covers containing pages with Arabic script. I am told that it is the Koran. But I cannot be certain. Some of the pages are loose. The book is housed in an embossed hinged book shaped gilt brass box. The lid has a design that is similar to those found on Turkish carpets. The back has a mosque. There would once have been a bale to connect the box to a chain to wear around the neck or to connect it to a watch chain. This is for a tiny little Edwardian miniature Koran prayer book. It has the more unusual blue leather cover embossed in gold decoration. It is a fabulous and very detailed little book and it is in excellent condition for its age. This version was first published by David Bryce around 1900 and was actually issued to Muslim soldiers fighting for the allies in world war one. This is a superb example. The outside of the book is still nice and tightly bound with its vivid gold and blue leather cover. All its gilding is perfectly intact and inside the book is in the same condition with all its pages present and no discolouration or foxing or creased pages. I tried to capture the shine and reflection of the gold gilding. It is so shiny. Plus, Text is so very small! There is a small loop for attaching to a necklace or chain. The high-quality leather binding and paper indicates antique age. The book is a real cloth bound book of high quality despite its small size. Additionally. The plastic around the magnifying glass is the old fragile-impact type(similar to Bakelite) not the modern flexible plastic of today. Plus, the red sash appears to be silk or satin.
