I have been in the business for 50 years -- this is the first time I have come across such a complete pharmacist or physician's recipe box for all types ... moreof drugs and cures. This journal is dating from 1826 and is entitled Formulae Medicamentorium A Compendium of the Modern Practical Physic 1826. This is bound in its original leather marbelized cardboard binding. This has an extraordinary amount of remedies, cures, and compounds of herbs. Also, there are cutouts from newspapers and periodicals posted here and there throughout the journal. There is everything from cough remedies upward. Practical recipes for waterproofing from boots to curing or treating diphtheria. One of the most interesting ledgers I have handled this entire time. We are selling this as we found it out of the estate. Invaluable information.

BOSTON WHARF MERCHANT HANDWRITTEN LEDGER Maritime/Nautical/Schooner ORIG 1700s
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 18TH CENTURY LEDGER OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS MERCHANT GEORGE MAKEPEACE. This terrific early account book spans from 1794-1796 and contains some 360 pages of manuscript entries. Detailed volume chronicles the business activities of noted Boston merchant George Makepeace(1735-1819) Who operated from a location at 18 Long Wharf in Boston[see: 1800 Boston City Directory] Built between 1710-1721 and extending nearly half a mile into the harbor, Long Wharf stretched considerably farther than other wharves into deep water thus allowing larger ships to tie up and do business directly with the many merchants that lined it. Boston's Long Wharf has been called"the busiest pier in the busiest port in America during early colonial times. Makepeace's waterfront location lent itself heavily to the maritime trade. Consequently. ... moreVolume contains scores of entries related to the outfitting of sea-going vessels such as the brigs Commerce, Dispatch, and Polly, schooners Olive, Betsey, Charlotte, Pomona, and William, and sloops Lucy, Hannah, Hannah's Capture, and Christiana. Many"voyage" entries suggest at least some of these vessels were setting sail for distant ports. Sea captains referenced here include Baker, Davis, Harding, Woodbury, Dunham, Snow, Clapp, and Perreaux. A myriad of commodities can also be found throughout including Whale Oil. Sperm Candles, Rigging, Sea Weed, Salmon, Smoked Herring, Cod Fish, Coffee, Chocolate, Rum, Tobacco, Molasses, Sugar, Pickles, Cordage, Cotton, Beef, Nails, Wood, Sundries, etc. Among various locations gleaned from ledger include Andover, Hingham, Lynn, Watertown, Charlestown, Braintree, Falmouth, Norton, and Weymouth, Massachusetts, Hartford, Philadelphia, Newport, and Providence, Rhode Island. NEW HAMPSHIRE LEDGER CIRCA 1830 HANDWRITTEN WITH NAMES REV & WAR OF 1812 VETS
Up for auction is a really unique ledger from the town of Sandborton New Hampshire. ledger is 87 pages in length and is filled with handwritten entries The first date of the ledger 1830 and than continues until around 1854. The ledger appears to have belonged to one of the members of the Sandborton family related to the founders of the town. I believe he fixed wagons. For the most part the entries are about how he was working on various wagons, mending carts, and fixing them for other members of the town. What really makes this ledger interesting is the fact that Sandborton is and was such a small town. This helps when identifying the names of the individuals inside the pages. Another interesting fact is the towns participation in historic events though out the nations history. Many of the members of this small town fought in the Revolutionary ... morewar. The War of 1812, and the civil war. I found four Captains listed in the ledger Captain Ebenezer Sandborton listed as a solider in the war of 1812 Captain Aza Cummer listed as solider in the war of 1812 Captain Foulsom? I believe he was listed in the War of 1812 as well. Captain John Philbrook? more Names mentioned in the ledger are Andrew J Gale James B holt Charles L Lane James Taylor Ethem Phibrooke Ezra Eastman Jeremurah Tilton Franklin Stone James B Abott John Patton John Brown Curtis Weeks Thomas Chafe Moses Clark Sammel Henry Charles Jaques Lucean Garrish Stephen Clay William Forrest David Johnson*There are many more this is a sample* the Sandbortons are well represented in the ledger. Some of the same names as those listed as serving in the revolutionary war. Inside the book is a reports of town Treasurer and overseers of the poor report for the year of 1840. I have added some back round info on Sandborton with lists of names of the town members who served in the various wars. INCORPORATION OF THE TOWN- The first movement for incorporation of the town was a petition presented to the Governor March 1. 1770, signed by Joseph Hoit and Josiah Sanborn. The pet

*HANDWRITTEN SERVANT LEDGER 1821 1869 HISTORIC WEALTHY PA & NJ FAMILY FILLED *
Up for auction is a very unique and rare ledger belonging to Jeremiah Fisher Leaming(1795-1888) The son of Thomas Leaming(1748-1797) AND his wife- Rebecca(Waln) Leaming(1802-1846) Inside the front cover it states J.F. Leminig's Account of Servants wages from 1821 to- Rebecca Waln Leming's name is also written on the following page and the year 1822. The Leming and Waln family were quite wealthy. And well know in NJ& PA. Leming was a descendant of the Mayflower and his family owned large tracts of land on the east coast. What I find even more fascinating is the possibility that many of the servants mentioned in the ledger are former slaves. I believe this. Because of research done by the National Park Service and other historians, indicates that a large number of servants in Philadelphia in the 1820s and 30s- were either former ... moreslaves or free African Americans. I have researched the individuals listed in the ledger one in particular seems like a candidate. The others need more attention. Some are listed by first name only) His name is David Shockley he worked for the Leaming family for 31 years. He is listed as a Waiter. And Coachmen in the ledger. There is a separate letter written by someone in the Leaming family. This letter I believe. Links Shockley to the Wesley Episcopal church( listed as a Free colored church in PA at the time) Excerpt from the letter see photo( 8& 9) Died Sept 28. 1858 aged 61 years and of Hannah his wife died July 1854 aged 54 years- he was for many years a trustee of the Wesley( are in paper is hard to decipher) Episcopal Church This stone is erected by J.F. Leaming in whose family the deceased lived 31 years faithful in all his duties and respected by all who know him. Thomas Leaming( Jermiah's father) did own slaves. There is information below that I found on a genealogy website. The information on the servants in PA is also listed below here is an important excerpt. Philadelphia was an important center for indentured servitude even as late as the 1820s. It is re
Boarding House Ledger Lumber River Rafting Olean,NY +PA Rare Handwritten 1833
Boarding House Ledger Lumber River Rafting Olean.NY +PA Rare Handwritten 1833 Description Amazing historical record documenting the origins of the Wheeler. Dusenbury& May Lumber Co. ~ A ledger book belonging to Ezra May. One of the founding members of the company, for a boarding house kept for employees in Portville near Olean, NY, beginning in 1833. Many of these employees were river raftsmen who would run logs down the Allegheny River to Warren. Philadelphia and beyond. The company. Later called the Wheeler& Dusenbury Co. would grow to become one of the largest in Pennsylvania. These men were pioneers and true visionaries. William Wheeler. Mentioned numerous times in the book, traveled by horseback through the virgin forests of Northwest Pennsylvania scouting out tracts to purchase for the company. When he ran out of road, he followed ... morethe rivers and streams to chart prime sources of pine, hemlock and spruce. The company did not indiscriminately clear cut these areas. But used a more selective approach. Today a large part of the Allegheny Forest survives as a testament to the wisdom of this course. One of the last remaining old growth forests in the United States exists because William Wheeler and Henry Dusenbury set it aside and left it untouched. It is called"Heart's Content, and remains a public recreation area today. Among their other innovations was the operation of the first successful band mill in the United States. At Endeavor, PA, and development of the Hickory Valley Railroad Co. one of the largest logging rail networks in Northwestern Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. Blue paper over boards with leather over spine. Handmade alphabetical index for names at one end. Lined pages. Written at front on two blank end pages: Ezra May Junior. A Count Book. 1833- 17 years. Size: 6 x 7 1/2" The book is filled out starting from opposite ends. Upside down from one another, with some overlap in the middle. The end with the address book seems to be entirely financial records, while the othe

ANTIQUE FDNY LEDGER Handwritten Book/Vintage Firefighting/NYC Fire Dept. 1900
FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT LEDGER. This amazing volume was compiled by Engine Company 42 which at the time operated from Fulton Avenue in the Bronx section of New York City. Where it was organized in 1874. Entries run from March 7th through July 26th, 1900, and cover day-to-day activities of the firehouse in fascinating detail. Massive folio contains some 500 numbered pages. The vast majority of which are chock full of handwritten entries including fire calls and alarms, roll calls, company drills, meal breaks, caring and exercising of the horses, trips to the blacksmith shop, equipment maintenance, supply purchases and expenditures, etc. This is one of those vintage gems which should be seen to be fully appreciated. A truly remarkable time capsule from a bygone era of NYC firefighting, compiled over 100 ... moreyears ago. The New York City Fire Department traces its origins back to 1648 when the first fire ordinance was adopted in what then was the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Hooks. Ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the"prowlers" but given the nickname"the rattle watch" patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these"bucket brigades" are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department. In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London. England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. These were the first fire engines to be used in the American colonies, and all able-bodied citizens were required to respond to a fire alarm and to

Handwritten Ledger 496 pag. Wright Furniture Grand Rapids Albert Dickerman 1889
YOU ARE BIDDING ON: the personal indexed correspondence ledger of 496 handwritten pages by Albert E. Dickerman. Manager of the John A. Wright Furniture Company Manufactures Gobleville, Michigan from March 14, and ends on May 11, 1889. From my research. They were part of the furniture companies centered in Grand Rapids Michigan in the late 19th Century. This book is important because this is a snapshot into late 19th century furniture industry and business practices. The John A. Wright Furniture was located near The Grand Rapids Michigan during the heyday of its great design and production of furniture. This is a look into the business relations within the industry and the personal life of people in commerce. This book is about pricing. Quality control, costs, and all the day to day issues related to the company. It is the copies of correspondence ... morebetween the company and its buyers and vendors. Most of these business correspondence ledgers did not survive. One in this condition is rare to find. In the beginning there are the names of who the letters were sent to with the corresponding number to the page where the letter is found. There are references to banks. Individuals, suppliers and varnish companies, the Herald Newspaper among others. This book was prepared as a duplicate copy of all correspondence sent by Horace Dickerman who was the factory manager. Some reference are very personal where he admits to the bookkeeping error and then asks about doing more business. Oher references relate to an order for stamps not beign useful. There is a page that shows the labor costs of about 27 employees for the previous month. The book is 1/4 bound leather. It was purchased from: Skeen& Stuart Stationary Co. Blank Books Stationery and Printing 77 Madison Street Chicago. The letters are written in ink on a thin trace paper. My assumption is that a lined paper was placed under the page and used as a guide since the writing is beautifully done. Some pages the ink is as clear as when written and on some pages the ink ran
CIRCA 1829 HANDWRITTEN LEDGER 32 SHEETS THE BRIG ELDER BREWSTER BOSTON MASS RARE
Up for auction is a rather fascinating item. This is a handwritten section of a ships account book from the Brig. Elder Brewster out of Plymouth Massachusetts. The dates rage from 1829-1832. There are 32 folio sized sheets that measure 8. 5 x 11 inches on handlaid paper. Each sheet has interesting watermarks that show either a crown and a date of 1794. Only 12 sheets have text written on both sides of the sheets and drawings. Three sheets have drawings only. The remainder are blank. In total there are 17 individual sketch's all executed in pencil. One has been hand colored. All sheets are for the most part disbound approx 10 are holding by string. The voyages the Elder Brewster took were from Boston to Antwerp. Than to Trieste Italy and what appears to be Rotterdam. All of this information is handwritten at the top of each sheet. On each ... moretrip the Brig had a different Master. For example F Merrick Ryder. Then Kimball Harlow and finally Ephraim Paty. What makes these sheets so interesting are the many folk art drawings done by hand in pencil. The first sheet shows a drawing of a brig. With the sails down. Some interesting depictions of brick buildings, with bars on the windows. Other sheets show several primitive drawings of country farms as well as some interesting buildings and another drawing of a Brig. One page has two buildings. One with a sign that have written in pencil" Plymouth House" and another with a large sign which reads, Plymouth Rock House W.H.S 1620" On the next page is a partial watercolor of a ship marked, Halofax, New Bedford. 1871 Handwritten Ledger Journal Fredericksburg Grapetown TX Schaper Usener Store
I almost gave up on my research with this one but finally hit a gold mine of information concerning the families listed on the pages. The person I purchased this from said it came out of an Arizona estate so he figured it was a mercantile ledger from an Arizona town. So that actually took me on all kinds of wild goose chases. It’s not Arizona; it’s Texas. Before I get to how I discovered this information. I want to give you a brief description of the ledger itself. This 1870’s ledger contains about 290 handwritten“general store” type expense entries. Four pages have been torn out but otherwise all pages are accounted for. There are hundreds of names written on the pages and also the items they purchased. For example; Revolving pistols. Boots, blankets, material, jeans, candy, bottle of bitter, tobacco, box mustard powder, buggy whip, whiskey, ... morejugs, brandy, spices, axe handles, coffee, belts, combs, underskirt, gloves, stockings, earrings, nails, pocket book, and on and on and on. There were only two places that I saw listed in this ledger; Grape Creek and Palo Alto. On the first page at the top it says Schaper& Usener. At first I thought it was“Ussner” but through hours of research I finally realized its spelled Usener. I kept putting all the different names into the search engines and not until I put in one of the names listed as“Doebbler& Cowan” which is how those two names are listed(together) sometimes in this ledger) did I find out this ledger was from a Texas town. Friedrich William Doebbler was born in 1824 in Prussia. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Gillespie County. Texas. He came to Texas in 1851 with his family. He settled in Grapetown on Grape Creek. Grapetown is a ghost town located along the Old San Antonio Road on South Grape Creek about 9 ½ miles south of Fredericksburg. The loosely-knit community around Grapetown took its first step becoming a town in 1860 when Fredrich Wilhelm Doebbler opened Grapetown’s first business establishment. A dry goods and general store called Doebbl

AMAZING. ORIGINAL 19TH CENTURY HANDWRITTEN LEDGER PERTAINING TO THE PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT. This remarkable manuscript volume bears the title"Pawtucket Fire Record arranged by Frank M. Bates" at the head of the first page. Volume contains some 145 hand-numbered pages bearing manuscript entries spanning from 1878-1890. Virtually every page contains the description of a fire call. Many of them quite spectacular with some involving the tragic loss of life. Also included are various figures such as financial losses resulting from fires. We believe this report was painstakingly compiled by Frank May Bates(b.1843) 19th century treasurer for the city of Pawtucket. An unparalleled original source relating to the Pawtucket, RI Fire Department. Pawtucket is a city in Providence County. Rhode Island. According to recent census ... moredata, the population was 71,148 making the fourth largest city in the state. Pawtucket was a major contributor of cotton textiles during the American Industrial Revolution. Slater Mill, built in 1793 by Samuel Slater on the Blackstone River falls in downtown Pawtucket, was the first fully mechanized cotton-spinning mill in America. Slater Mill is known for developing a commercially successful production process not reliant on earlier horse-drawn processes developed in America. He constructed and operated machines for producing yarn. Other manufacturers continued, transforming Pawtucket into a center for textiles, iron working and other products. The textile business in New England declined during the Great Depression with many manufacturers closing or moving their facilities South where operations and labor were cheaper. But unlike numerous older mill towns in the region. Pawtucket retained much of its industrial base. Today, goods produced in the city include lace, non-woven and elastic woven materials, jewelry, silverware, metals, and textiles. Hasbro, one of the world's largest manufacturer of toys and games, is headquartered in Pawtucket. Originally, there were two P

1881 EARLY CONNECTICUT ELECTRICITY LEDGER Handwritten EDISON LAMP CO. ANTIQUE
Up for auction is a rare and unusual item. A dense ledger book, owned by an unknown 1880s business, detailing purchases, usually of copper wire and other electrical supplies, from companies such as“Electric Supply, American Electrical Works, Roebling, Edison Lamp Company, Eastern Electrical Cable Company, and several more. Entries are dated between August 1881 and March 1887. The ruled. Formerly leather-bound, note-book, contains simple columns for amount, company, number(i.e. type of wire? wire material(almost always Copper) and amount in pounds. I cannot discern what organization may have used this as a ledger, involving amounts of copper wire purchased, but it may have used a great deal of copper wire, as the amount of wire in pounds is typically recorded as over 200 lbs. No column for cost. A thick book. With about half of the book densely ... morefilled in in ink. One name on rear page: Alfred. Leather spine still mostly there, but both covers gone. An early piece of American technological and business history, only I’m not sure what business or what exact technology it was being used for. The Edison Lamp Company was only formed in 1879, so these are very early notations regarding purchases of wire from the company. I would guess that this was a large scale electrical wiring job. Perhaps for a town, large company, or municipal building or buildings, in the 1880s. The book may have come from a large lot of material from around Willimantic, Connecticut, and might be connected to the very early wiring of factories there for electricity during this time. But I cannot definitively make this connection with the information I have. Intriguing and one of a kind. Good luck! Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution

1847-80 Handwritten Journal Ledger Diary Green Family Pennsylvania Cures Recipes
Up for auction today is a handwritten journal originally belonging to the Green family of Pennsylvania. On the front of the journal it says“Charles Green’s Book July 1847_ford PA. I can’t quite make out the town name so I’ve scanned a close up of it. I do know that other places mentioned inside this journal are Chester Co. Bucks Co. Germantown. Schuylkill and Norristown. The other names associated with the book’s owner is“Ephraim Green” and“George A. Green. There are a total of about 65 handwritten pages and a variety of things and dates are represented. I would say the earliest entry is from 1847 and the latest is from 1882. The earliest pages are work related. There are 17 pages and the beginning is titled. Account with Father. Charles Green. These are hours worked. Pay given and the reason for the work. This is somewhat of a diary of sorts ... morebecause he not only talks about who he did work for but also if he had to take time off; the reason for that time off. I’ve scanned a few examples for you to see what I mean. For instance, on October 14 th. 1854 he takes time off for“Mother Brittin’s funeral” There is time taken off for more funerals. Raising hay houses and barns, church functions, helping people move, anniversaries, time spent in the hospital which he says is on“Sixth and Master St. and much more. Lots of names mentioned too. Then part of the journal has to do with coal bought in the 1860’s. And another part shoe repair; at least I think its shoe repair because most of the entries say, Bottoming” and the account is also with a man by the name of“Sylvester Megargal. Some of the names they repaired shoes for are; John Blake. Robert Campbell, Peter Conklin, W. Colfish, Wm. Davis, Jacob Cottman, Allen Jones, George Wolf, W. E. Reese, Charles Osmon, W. Ryan, P. Arrison,P. Lawler, J. B. Holtman, Patrick Conroy, Eugene Cakill, Jesse Roberts, Jos. Byers, W. Slack and more. Finally most of the pages have to do with recipes and cures dating from the 1870’s and 1880’s. Many of them are for; Di

1828 Handwritten Journal Ledger Doctor John Phillips Benjamin Swain Bristol PA
Up for auction today is an 1828 handwritten journal or ledger that belonged to Dr. John Phillips. On the front and on the first page it says. Doctr John Phillips in a/c with Benjm Swain. There are no places mentioned in this journal but I believe it might be from Bristol Borough in Pennsylvania. The reason I think this is because when I put both names in the web search engines I came up with this… Bristol Borough: Dr. Edward Swain was the son of Benjamin Swain. Whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the county. He studied medicine with Dr. Phillips, graduated in 1833, commenced practice shortly after, became popular, and was generally successful in the treatment of his patients. But he, like a great many young men of promise, was suddenly cut off in the midst of life. On the fourth day of July, 1939, he accepted an invitation to ... moretake an excursion to Philadelphia on the steamboat Burlington. Shortly after the boat left Burlington she was run into by the steamer Pilot Boy. The doctor being in a side room at the time. Was crushed to death and fell into the river. It was many days before his body was recovered. Thus died a young man of bright prospects, leaving a widow and three children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate father. ANTIQUE HANDWRITTEN WORK LEDGER DIARY TEXAS DEPRESSION ERA 1939 OKLAHOMA
4” x 7” Handwritten Texas Work ledger diary with great depression era notations. This little gem sparkles. It is rural-speak at it's best, giving the feel of having stopped by to see this lady and visit with her on the porch and she’s catching you up on her life in 1939. Shes a great character for a novelist desiring to capture the phraseology and thoughts of the depression era woman from Texas. She has a specific vernacular that is distinctive and she starts most notation entries with the word“Well” or“Boy” so as her sentences unfold there is a sense of first person narrative as if she’s speaking directly to you! Think Ma Kettle. 48 pgs. All have writing, lots of mis-spells I have left them intact in this write-up. They seem to own a moving business. But no work. The pay and lack of pay, to their workers is recorded weekly May– Nov. ... more1939 along with lots of notes per week about her life, please see scans. 1869 Handwritten Treasurer Ledger Schuylkill Co. PA Folk Art Scrap 100s of Names
Up for auction today is a huge ledger(10 ½” x 16” and is 2” thick) belonging to Conrad Seltzer who was the Treasurer of Schuylkill County Pennsylvania. It represents the year 1869 from January to October and has 352 handwritten pages. It is full of hundreds of names of the folks in the area who were paid or were charged for various things during that year. For an example I’ve listed a few names and what was written beside their names; Agnes Allison-Witness fees. Israel Foose-Constable Fees, Silas Hufnagle- Assessor fees, Daniel Shepp-Bridge Views, Ernst Orth-Road Tax, Charles Frailey-Justice Fees, R. Kline& Co.Burial Ex. A. H. Tallerstadt-Post. Mort. Ex. Lewis F. Kimmel-Agricultural Society, Bright& Co. Nails for Alms House, W. G. Johnson-Court Crier, Charles Logue-Liquor, John Hutton-Police, and many many more. There are other ... morepages. One that almost looks like a census and then at the end is a page devoted to the Alms House. Plus in the middle of the book are numerous pages in a row where tons of people were applying for a“Tavern License. Now the condition of the ledger is very poor. The cover is a mess and is falling off of the binding. The binding is also split about ¼ of the way through but most of the pages are attached. Some little girl also used this later on as a scrapbook as there are tiny pieces of loose scrap between the pages and several pressed leaves. One page does have the scrap glued to it as you can see in the scan. It looks like a doll house room. Please keep the condition in mind when purchasing.

Antique Diary 1763 Leather Handwritten Manuscript Scotland Farm Ledger Almanac
The auction is for a very beautiful handwritten manuscript diary dated 1763-1786 from Scotland. The title page is thus: The Newcastle Pocket-Book: or Gentleman and Lady's Complete Journal For the Year MDCCLXIII(1763) Newcastle Upon Tine: Printed by I. Thompson. Esq; and company; and fold by W. Charnley, J. Fleming, and R. Akenhead, and the rest of the Booksellers in Town and Country. The diary is an accounting ledger of day to day farm events. The farmer kept records of wages(stipends) paid. Bolls made into meal and malt, accounts of sheep and sales, debits paid and owed, Bolls sowed and cut down, and so much more. The diary is a full calendar year, but rather than to begin a new one, or toss out the old one, the farmer used it again and again for over 20 years. As long as there were still blank spaces, the entries would be filled in. ... moreSome of the penned notations say things like"about this time" or the like as perhaps there weren't many spaces left during that particular calendar period. It was most likely very important to keep track of grains sowed and such to make sure that year to year the events took place around the same time. It would also make sense that the diary was kept so long because items such as these were certainly a luxury and rural farmers would not have the means to keep buying new calendar books year to year. Along with the wonderful personal entries. This book is absolutely loaded with every kind of fact and information of the day. It is also an Almanac of sorts with tables, charts, c. All of the information is here in a handy and useful reference since most folks during the days of 1763 in Scotland, who were mostly sheep and grain farmers, did not have any books at all, and this diary was used much like a current day cycolopedia. There is so much information about the reigning crown and much history about royal lineage. There are loads of historical dates, lists of the Royal Navy, list of the members of the House of Commons, a table of Roads from London to Edinburgh, a list

Very Rare & Historical 1872 Handwritten Ledger Jouranl Oregon City Family Names
This is an extremely rare and one of a kind handwritten journal or ledger that has such amazing historical value as far as the state of Oregon goes. It was from the great city of Oregon City which is on the outskirts of Portland. Before I describe the ledger I want to give you some history behind the city. It’s long but well worth reading if you don’t know much about it… OREGON CITY: In 1823. Dr. John McLoughlin was appointed Chief Factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company at Fort Vancouver. In 1829. McLoughlin laid out a two-square mile claim at the Willamette Falls and began construction of three houses to shelter employees working at the site. The houses were burned by the natives. But rebuilt by McLoughlin. A small fur trading center was also established and work was begun on a millrace. Historic Bucks County Handwritten Ledger Haycock Run, PA 1890-1894 w 224 pages
This is a great piece of Bucks County history. It is a handwritten store ledger of names in Haycock Township. Bucks County, PA from 1890 to 1894. A bit of history for reference-Haycock is mentioned in a deed as early as 1737. According to the History of Bucks County, PA Archives, it was probably named many years before the township was organized after the little mountain in it which was so called because of its resemblance to a cock of hay. The creek which winds along the base of the mountain is called Haycock Run, in the boundary of Nockamixon, 1742. The front page of this ledger has a stamped attribution that reads"E. A. Frankenfield, Dealer in General Merchandise, Haycock Run, PA" It could be Abel Frankenfield, the third son of Henry who married Mary C. daughter of John and Diana(Sassman) Hager. According to the History of Bucks ... moreCounty, PA Archives, Abel received a liberal education, and in 1877 engaged in general merchandising. He was an assistant postmaster at Haycock Run and the office was in his store. I do not know for sure that this is his store ledger, but the history fits. There are 225 numerically stamped pages. The first entry is 1890 for Abel McCarty. The last entry is M.D. Frankenfield, 1894. On page 124, Haycock Township is listed as a customer dated 1891. The ledger show entries of"Mdse" purchased, the date and the amount on the left side of the page. Across from that, within the right part of the page, is date of payment, the amount, and the method of payment. Many times payment is cash. But other entries include by Hauling, by Prod(produce) by Beans, by Eggs, Shoulder, Squab, Baskets, Mdse, to name a few. The very first pages of this ledger are names in alphabetical order with numbers across from them. I have no idea what they reference. These names take up the A-Z portion of the front of this ledger. Then page 1 begins as a numerical stamp in the upper right of the page. This ledger is 12 1/2" high and 7 1/2" wide. Along the side of the binding is printed the word

This remarkable handwritten manuscript is signed by Henry O. Brown and William H. Smith. On intermittent pages throughout this nineteenth century handwritten journal. Brown was also a Justice Of The Peace, which at that time in New York was parallel with being an associate judge with tremendous legal power. The latter part of this day book has a Contractual Agreement wherein each partner put in $1000, in a farriery business; this was a huge amount of money in mid-nineteenth ... morecentury America.
