This particular Bible comes from the first of a four-volume set(Genesis through Chronicles) It contained the usual introduction from St. Jerome but the most interesting aspect was pages 169- 184 were omitted because they were not present at the time of binding. This original 1887 Holman Holy Bible with Concordance is very large with hand a hand tooled cover on both sides and binding. It is 10 x 12 1/2 x 3 1/2" thick with gold leaf on all 3 edges. The whole cover and binding are beautiful. The first section before the bible is a dictionary with contents of 150 pages full of beautiful engravings. Some in color with gold leaf embellishments. The engr4avings continue through the parallel pages of the bible. Many are full-page. The family section of the bible is all in gold leaf and engravings and the marriages. Births, and deaths have not been filled out. The binding is very tight and a few pages have slight browning and foxing. First of all. I can confidently state that one side of this leaf has the important Christian phrase"The Father and The Son and the Holy Spirit, even though I do not read Arabic, the word in Arabic for Son is IBN, which is related to the Hebrew and Syriac word for Son, which is"Ben, just as in the proper name Benjamin(see the 4th scanned image, 3rd and 4th lines from the bottom) An early 18th century rare printed Syriac Bible leaf(with writing on both sides) on paper. This was published by the Maronite Christian Church. Using the ancient Syriac script or letters but the words are actually in the Arabic language; this writing in Syriac and reading in Arabic is called Garshuni or Karshuni. Two(2) woodcut illustrations on one leaf or sheet. From a Latin Vulgate Bible published in Lyon in 1567 by Guglielmo Rovillium, with the Roman numeral date of M. D. LXVII = 1567. The beautiful woodcut in this Bible were made by Pierre Eskrich(1530-1590) and Thomas Arande, both being inspired by Bernard Salomon. However, a catalogue from Leo Olschki, Livres a figures des XV et XVI siecle. 1913, attributes the woodcuts to Jean Moni, inspired by Bernard Salomon. Size of the sheet is 4 3/4 in. x 7 1/2 in. The sheet shows some light browning discoloration due to their age and use over the centuries. Also, there are occasional worm holes, especially along the edges. Who sold the leaf in the twentieth century, described it as having been made in Italy circa 1280 AD. Of course. Closely related work was also done in France throughout much of the 1200s. Unusual Antique ceramic planter of a baby/ small child(adorned with a bow) holding a fig leaf boat(planter) May be a depiction of the biblical story of baby Moses but I am not completely sure. Planter is glazed with a"blue dip" giving it a blue/white or blue/light gray marble swirl appearance in some areas(most visible in picture of the baby's arm) Planter is 6" x 3" with a 4-1/2" height to top of baby's head and highest point of planter. Planter alone is roughly 4" x 2-1/2" inside. Planter is in excellent condition with no chips. Nicks, cracks or crazing. I have never seen this type of"bluing" and was unable to find any ceramic items that looked even remotely similar. Original Leaf, Christopher Sauer's "Gunwad" Bible, Pennsylvania, 1776
An original leaf from the first Bible to be printed in the United States. It was printed by Christoph Sauer(1695-1758) in Germantown. Pennsylvania, in German in 1743. The original edition was 1200 copies. An English language Bible would not be printed in the United States for another 40 years. The Bible was reissued after his death by his son Christopher in 1763, and again in 1776. The 1776 edition, of which this is a leaf, consisted of 3,000 copies. At the time it was being printed and bound Germantown was invaded by the British. Christopher Sauer's printing equipment was confiscated and his business location was used by British soldiers to stable their horses. The pages of the Bible were used by the soldiers as gun wading for their muskets and the book became known as the Gun Wad Bible. Today, of the original 3000, only 127 are known ... moreto exist.
