This is the first German-American Bible printed outside of Philadelphia, and the first Bible printed in Reading. A significant edition, both in size and scope, this marked the spread of German printers and the more local production of bibles in the Pennsylvania-Dutch back country. A solid copy, bound in original leather binding over thick and heavy boards, in decent shape, both original clasps are gone, moderate wear to edges of leather, arear board nearly detached with only a cord holding it on. Large raised bands to spine, some wear to spine with light loss, but label visible. Unique antique PA German design. Linen backing, not mounted. Features exquisite primitive style hand-coloring; hand-lettered; in an inprinted form. The main text. One verse and the imprint in Fraktur are within a heart in the center of the document. Above the imprint is a pair of birds perched on flowers in a vase. Two additional verses in Fraktur are within small hearts in the lower corners. From each of them protrudes a leafy branch with a bird. LOVELY 1816 PA GERMAN FRAKTUR/BIRTH CERTIFICATE -ANGELS/BIRDS -PRINTED BY EBNER
This is a nice early PA German fraktur/birth certificate. The entire piece in is Pennsylvania German. It is dated October 1816. It was printed in Allentown. PA by Henrich Ebner in 1816. It has angels on either side and birds on either side of the bottom. There is a cherub across the middle of the top. The handwriting is also in PA German and I cannot read most of it. It is from PA. It measures 16" by 13 1/2" There is some minor wear. The left upper corner is somewhat ragged and there are some other rough edges. There is a tear that runs throught the cherub that has old tape on the back and there are several orther small tears and holes. In general for its age the conditionis excellent. The angels, bird and cherub have been watercolored in shades of red and mustard. Buyer pays shipping.

Antique 19th c Folk Art Hand Painted Decorative Wooden Box Slide Top PA German
Offering for your consideration an antique wooden box with a different hand painted geometric pattern on all four sides and on the top. The box has a slide top with a hand carved finger notch to use the slide for easy open and close. It appears to be totally hand made. The box measures 5" long by 4" wide by 2 1/2" tall. It is in excellent condition. My mother. Who is now 90 years old, was an avid Americana collector. She purchased this box in Pennsylvania decades ago in Lancaster County. I therefore suspect that it is of Pennsylvania German origin. Henry Brubaker born in 1809 was the Great Grandson of Michael Brubaker, the very first of the Brubakers to arrive in Lancaster County Pennsylvania from Switzerland around 1727 and settled in New Holland. His will is on record at the Lancaster County Courthouse. He was a wagonmaker by trade, and was in possession of two cows and five sheep and lived on a small tract of land. The family was Mennonite and were originally from Zurich, Switzerland. Henry's father's name was Abraham, and his grandfather was John, his Great Grandfather being Michael. Another interesting aside about the family. Henry had 3 siblings that were born to Abraham and Anna his wife; Catherin, William, and Susan. In 1823, Catherin created a beautiful needlework sampler that was part of the Landmark Betty Ring Collection of Schoolgirl Samplers, a sale recently held at Sotheby's in New York. Was located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and was in operation from 1854 to 1934* The Song Cloth is a piece of lightweight linen made by the Chase Bag Co. Chase Bag made these Song Cloths for other breweries as well. Not just for Finks. The Song Cloth measures 26" by 37" and features the German beer drinking song"Schnitzel Bank" Carver's Bench) The tune to which the song is sung is at the bottom of the cloth. The Song Cloth is in very good condition with nice. Crisp color. ANTIQUE BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE 19TH CENTURY. JULY 14, 1883 HANOVER. PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN LUTHERAN COLORFUL ENGRAVING GOOD CONDITION ABSOLUTELY NO RESERVE Here is an antique Baptismal Certificate from 1883. This Holy Baptism(of a son) occurred in Hanover. Pennsylvania at Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church. The Certificate is signed and dated and contains the family provenance. The engraving is very colorful in earth tones of blues, greens, browns, and dark yellows. The certificate is a brownish vellum paper stock. In Frame, the certificate is 11" across by 13" tall. The condition of the Certificate is good considering it is a paper product and is over 125 years old. It stayed on a wall for most of that time. The only thing I see is that the wood frame on top is missing maybe a wood piece but otherwise the Certificate and frame are ... morein good condition for their age. This came right off the wall of a non-smoking home. While in my possession, there have been no alterations, restorations, or cleanings. The descent of the Bible is traced in notations through the George Baker family to the related King family. George Baker(b. 1781) and his wife Barbara Hollinger, as well as others mentioned in the records, are buried in the graveyard at The Mummerts Meeting House in Hamilton Township of Adams County PA. This Church of the Brethren meeting house is a little south of East Berlin, PA, just off Route 194. George Baker(1749-1805) was the son of George Baker. Who was one of the original residents of East Berlin. The elder George willed his 285 acres to his three sons, John, George and Daniel on 8/3/1770. George Baker owned 309 acres of land in Berwick Township and had named it"Baker's Garden" This land was acquired on 5/31/1766. I've given it a clean and checked the valves are good, bit of pot crackle on some channels, hard to get at them with the spray, but bit of exercise seems to sort them. German made, definitely a unique style. Two EL34 power section, ECC81 which I assume is the PI, front end is solid state, or there are more valves buried in its innards ... morethat I didn't see. American Folk Art Antique Lancaster County Pennsylvania Woven Coverlet of Linen& Wool Triple Width- Pennsylvania German c.1780- DESCRIPTION A Rare Pennsylvania German American Coverlet circa 1780. A delightful early woven coverlet from an estate in Lancaster County. This is a triple width woven coverlet made of natural linen and hand dyed wool. An unusual color combination in a rarely seen and quite wonderful weaving pattern. Pink wool geometric 8 sided"windows" as the predominate pattern along with running"bars" of dark brown wool. The linen is a natural pale cream coloring. It was made in the late 1700's or very early 1800's. This was made by a home weaver. Rather than a professional weaver of the day. The loom being very narrow, each of the three widths that make up this coverlet are only 28" wide. ... moreAnd, that was typical of the looms used by either a man or woman of a Pennyslvania Dutch/ Mennonite household of the late 18th or early 19th centuries. A small loom was a permanent fixture in most of the homes around here and was used for weaving fabric for clothing, towels, and of course these warm geometric overshot coverlets. The top and bottom edges are rolled and handsewn with heavy linen thread. Each width retains the selvedge edges. The individual widths were joined with a linen thread using a treadle machine. Each of the three widths were perfectly matched to the pattern. Overall it measures 84" x 92" Coverlets with such narrow widths are rarely found today. Most have not survived. This one was packed away for many years and is still in remarkably good condition with no holes or thin spots and only a few tiny spots here and there. Framed Cathlic Scene, Wilkes Barre, PA, Bazaar, German, hand signed
Wilkes Barre. Pennsylvania A wonderful example of an unusual piece of local history; this auction is for one framed picture depicting what appears to be several children adoring the baby Jesus on Mary's knee. Across the bottom is a quote from Mathew 25-40: Amen I say to you. As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren you did it to me" This framed picture is hand signed by one Monsignor Freidrich Lehlatter. The event is"in grateful remembrance of the Bazaar. Wilkes Barre, PA February 5-10th, 1923" A little digging turned up this historical note from ancestry.com: February 5. 1923: Bazaar being conducted in Wilkes-Barre under the auspices of Catholic churches in aid of starving children in Germany. Any student of history knows Germany was at this time in the grips of an uncontrollable hyperinflation on its currency; ... morethe result being many were starving. Thousands of German Marks could not even buy a loaf of bread. This also explains the noticeably German name of the Monsignor who signed the picture. The only thing lost in time is to whom these framed pictures were given; donating businesses. Church members, or? This picture measures 11 inches wide by 13 inches tall. Frame included. The glass appears to be original and has a nice air bubble to attest its age. The frame has a few minor dings. It could be repainted, or left in its original state. The border paper has a few stains barely visible on the bottom probably due to moisture. Otherwise, it needs nothing except a wall to hang on. This is a neat piece of local history remembering an event from 80 years ago. I wonder how many of these pictures still survive? Thanks for looking! Once heard through our villages and towns, have long been silent and the weavers long since departed. The identity of many is lost forever, but to guy F. Reinert goes the credit of having rescued 182 of our coverlet weavers from oblivion, like the Hausemans of Lobachsville, Berks County Solomon Kuder, Trexlertown, Lehigh county, John Kaufman near Blooming Glen, Bucks co. etc. also many pictures of the coverlets. Unique Pa German Groff Family Bible Record 1700s
You are viewing a rare and unique Pennsylvania German manuscript Bible record for the Groff family of Lancaster County. PA This page was removed years ago from a Bible and then mounted to cardboard with staples(see scan) The overall damage from the staples is minimal since they can be removed rather easily( had it been idiot Scotch Tape, the acid would have ruined the paper) The good news is that the inscription is intact, and that the records may prove invaluable to someone descended from this old illustrious Mennonite family. The sheet of paper measures 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches with German script on BOTH sides. We have not attempted to lift the old paper to show the back side but there is 1(one) entry on the back for a child of this same family. What you see here are the birth dates of babies, Marx(Marcus) 1757, Hans(John) 1778, Anna(1780) ... moreDavid(1782) and a later one on the back. It has been suggested that perhaps Marcus is the father of the others, since there is such a time span between him and the rest: he was old enough to start making babies in the 1770s, but this is just a suggestion, since many of these old Mennonites ran through several wives. In any case, here is genealogical information not found anywhere else and it looks as though the original family Bible may be destroyed. RARE.

I purchased this from an individual so I do not know the history of this German"Wilkum" Sign. It has two holes in it. One in the center top and one in the middle. It has many"age" spots through the word"wilkum" and some at the bottom. Otherwise it is a nice 23-1/2" round German sign. The cardboard is thick 1/8" Some moisture spots on the back also. First printed in Koenigsberg in Prussia, by Alexander Baumann, in 1715. This edition was found in a bible printed in Pennsylvania and presumably was printed in Pennsylvania as well. ICONIUM HIMMELSBRIEF & HOUSE BLESSING - ENGLISH LANGUAGE BROADSIDE - PA GERMAN ?
The Iconium Himmelsbrief(Heaven-Letter) is so-called because of its alleged origin near Iconium in Mesopotamia. Most editions of this Himmelsbrief that have been found in North America are in the English language. German copies occasionally have been found in Pennsylvania. Indicating that they were printed and/or marketed there. This particular edition is unique. It was found in New Jersey. It originally sold for 10 cents(US currency) indicating that it was printed in the US. The printer has not been identified. It is in very fragile condition. There are several fold marks as can be seen in the images. There is a horizontal tear along the top fold mark, extending almost the entire width of the broadside. There are several more smaller tears along the creases. Measures approximately 9" X 12"

PA GERMAN BOOK OF ANTIQUE MAGIC BY J.G. HOHMANN / HOHMAN - RARE 1ST EDITION 1820
Rare first edition of Johann Georg Hohmann's"pow wow" book. Der Lange Verborgene Freund(The Long Lost Friend) published in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1820. This book had a profound influence on Pennsylvania German folk culture and was reprinted many times. The hard covers are hand-decorated and have a leather spine. The leather is split on bottom edge of spine. Inside pages are tight and have age related foxing and staining. Complete with 100 pages. The name"Michael" is handwritten on an inside front page. Measures approximately 4 3/8" X 7" Please see my other listings for another magic book attributed to Hohmann. It is undated. But published ca. 1815-25.
