It was also known as Himyarite language. And the second source was from Egypt during the Hyksos ruling. The Hyksos were Semitic tribes; invaded old Egypt and ruled for 400 years. When they were expelled out of Egypt they fled to Nuba. Ethiopia. And Canaan. The Christian Kingdom of Aksum(old Ethiopia) had occupied Yemen in the early centuries A.D. The Ge’ez language is a combination of the two; the Semitic and the old Ethiopian languages. Book and palm frond(from the Suffrages to the Saints) Not all Books of Hours included a section dedicated to the Suffrages but, when present, the section usually appears near the end of the volume. The section normally presents the commemorated saints in accordance with a strict traditional hierarchy. The exquisite miniature contains a myriad of colors and both painted and burnished gold. St. Barbara's clothes in red. Blue and white highlighted with gold, her halo in gold. The background with green trees and hills, and further in the distance a castle. The sky in several shades of blue. The border includes acanthus leaves, fine tendrils with burnished ... moregold leaves, flowers, berries, a grotesque and bird. A four-line illuminated"D" in blue, red and gold begins the prayer"Domine labia mea aperies" Lord, open my lips" Latin bastarda script written in brown ink with distinguished text in red. LARGE HAND-ILLUMINATED ANTIPHONAL VELLUM LEAF. Pages 40& 41, extracted from a European Medieval hymnal, date and country unknown. The text is in Latin, and the musical notation is primitive- probably dates before 1600. The leaf measures about 15" X 22.5" An unusually large size. The sheet is illuminated on both sides in red and black. The condition is fairly good: some soiling and wrinkling; one little hole; a 2" tear at the margin; also red ink staining(probably ancient) at the top corner; the reverse side is toned a darker shade than the obverse. The leaf measures approx. 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches and is ruled in red with 18 lines of Textura script. Also present on each side is a red and blue bar border in margin with hairline stems sprouting ivy leaves of burnished gold and flowers. I purchased it from a dealer many years ago and had it framed between two sheets of UV glass so that I can view both sides of the somewhat translucent page. Which is apparent in the photos(you can see the writing showing through from the opposite side, especially in one of the photos when I held the frame up to a window and took the shot. The frame, a decorative frame with gold highlights, dimensions are approximately 13" x 11" The framer's points and unfinished frame are visible on the obverse side. The book of hours has its ultimate origin in the Psalter. Which monks and nuns were required to recite. By the 12th century this had developed into the breviary, with weekly cycles of psalms, prayers, hymns, antiphons, and readings which changed with the liturgical season. Eventually a selection of texts was produced in much shorter volumes and came to be called a book of hours. Many books of hours were made for women. There is some evidence that they were sometimes given as a wedding present ... morefrom a husband to his bride. Frequently they were passed down through the family. As recorded in wills. Although the most heavily illuminated books of hours were enormously expensive. A small book with little or no illumination was affordable much more widely, and increasingly so during the 15th century. The sheets were rulled leaving space for initials and the text carefully copied with a quill in uniform calligraphy. This comes from a Medieval Manuscript Bible, one that would have been carried by a friar in his travels. Written vellum in dark brown ink in a small& elegant gothic book hand.
