It is written in a Dead Latin Langauge but at one time I had it partly translated but I forgot what it said. I know not very bright on my part. But I do remember that it is a plainsong about the apostle James. It is hand done on vellum. It is 2 sided the front is the begining of the song and the back is the end. It is framed in heavy glass on both sides there are 2 screws with just and old cord hooked on it to hang it from but it works. Pages are about 24 by 17. Because of the weight and size of this shipping will be around $30 to $40 depending on where you live.

The covers are wooden boards covered with decorated leather- brown on the outside red to the inner covers. An added attraction is the early cloth inside the boards. I don't presume to be knowledgeable on early religion but to me this is truly beautiful. And I'm sure, rare. The book constitutes a total of 280 hand written pages- 140 leaves. And all Vellum. The pages are generally very good with later annotations from previous owners- also some pages have been repaired with stitching where a page may have been torn. A couple or so pages have a hole on the page. How that would have occurred I don't know. Any faults should be seen in my images. You are bidding on a true piece of Biblical history! Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible w/ great handpainted sce nes throughout! Written in the Ethiopic(Ge'ez) script. A Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these"Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of a bit of age, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded and worn at the edges, with some folk art drawings and figures as well as more modern color paintings, possibly totems. We could loosely guess this ... moreone originated sometime c1700-1850, with the covers(nicely embossed with a cross pattern) stitching, and hand paintings a bit more contemporary, probably c1900-1950. There are marginal traces of red paint to the page edges as well, origin unknown. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces. Written in black. With color religious figure drawings, as shown. This example is bound in square leather covered wooden boards with a cross pattern and border. The cover tied through with twine into the thin leaves. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, which is normal for these rare gems. The twine is holding very firmly. There are 18 leaves/36 pages in this, with 4 modern color figure totem illustrations(one period illustration in black as shown) Obtained in an online auction direct from Ethiopia. Bible measures 3.5" x 4.5" A True treasure. HONDIUS. Gerard Puppius. Amsterdam. Gerrit Bouman, 1736. Extremely rare Dutch language(translated from the German language) Hieroglyph Bible. Presented to Dutch children memorizing biblical proverbs and sayings. The basic principle is kept. That is the bible reference is put at the top of the page, the bible quotation in the form of a rebus fills most of the page, and a two-line verse is put underneath. A later edition(first 1720) of this very popular dutch picture book. Containing 140 of the original 150 plates. Some handcoloring of a few plates, a few small tears. Vellum green stained, with some wear as shown, some staining throughout b ut nothing major. All pages bound. Very scarce!

The vellum animal skin shows some discoloration. Especially around the edges of the page, due to age, water damage, and liturgical use. Also notice the difference between the small black marks on the"hair" side and the very smooth"skin" side of the vellum. It should be pointed out that the series of vertical pin-prick holes in the vellum in the outer margin were made as a guide to the scribe for the placement and alignment of each line. Also, there are faint vertical about 4 3/4 in. x 6 in. T hese two(2) sheets contain a total of eleven(11) red lluminated letters. The ink for the Biblical text is a dark brown, while the rubrications for initial letters and chapter numbers alternate between red ink and blue ink. There are also small red marks to indicate the beginning of verses. The colors are strong and fresh-looking. Especially on the"hair" side, with the"skin" side being faded a little. Size of the sheet is 4 1/4 in. x 6 1/4 in. The text block area is 3 in. x 4 1/4 in. The writing by the scribe is extremely small and precise. With a full twelve lines per inch! There are 44 lines of an elegant gothic book hand in brown ink. Vellum was made from animal skin and sometimes they even intestines, but this seems to be from the skin. A limited number of other rare Titles and popular verses available. This comes from a Medieval Manuscript Bible, one that would have been carried by a friar in his travels. This leaf contains the GOSPEL OF MARK 10-12(partial) WITH WORDS OF JESUS! A very old illuminated vellum(sheep or goat skin) section from an Ethiopian Coptic bible(20 pages on 10 leaves front and back) written in Ge'ez script.An ancient Semitic language related to the Sabaean dialect of Yemen from the 2nd Century A.D.practically speaking,a dead language and now only used in liturgical functions.These are consecutive pages and read as one text.They are large and measure each 230mm x 163mm.The red lettering indicates important holy places and people.These leaves are thick and stiff in very fine antiquariate condition.There are still traces of hair on some of these leaves and holes from the original skinning before the tanning process.I have used a flash on these photos and the pages are not as bright as they appear here.

VERY LARGE ETHIOPIAN BIBLE LEAF VELLUM: Ge'ez language is one of the Semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia in the past; and probably originated from 2 sources: The Sabaean language originated in Southern Yemen few centuries B.C; and represents an old Arabic Semitic language spoken by the famous biblical Queen of Sheba. It was also known as Himyarite language. And the second source was from Egypt during the Hyksos ruling. The Hyksos were Semitic tribes; invaded old Egypt and ruled for 400 years. When they were expelled out of Egypt they fled to Nuba. Ethiopia. And Canaan. The Christian Kingdom of Aksum(old Ethiopia) had occupied Yemen in the early centuries A.D. The Ge’ez language is a combination of the two; the Semitic and the old Ethiopian languages. It was vanished with time and nowadays is only used in biblical and Christian Orthodox ... moreschools in old Ethiopia. What you see here is an old leaf from a Bible or Psalms book. The script is written on a vellum. Calf or goat skin with bold black and red ink. The red ink is usually reserved for the name of God or Saints. So I am not sure about the exact date or content; but according to some experts and references, these bibles are not dated and vary from 200 to 600 years in age; only God knows.
