Very Large: Approximately 38” x 76” This beautiful bible story painting was ... morepurchased in Addis Ababa in 2004– we got it in a little shop that we often visited near the famous Tiatu Hotel. The shop owner and artist signed the painting. Kristos Solomon 2004. The oil painting was a work in progress when we first viewed it. So we returned later to buy it. Although I do not believe that Ato Solomon is a very well known artist, his grandfather was quite respected and we own a few of his paintings on skin. This style of painting is very traditional. And but it’s rare to see a newer piece like this so very well executed. The colors are vibrant and the details marvelous! I hate to part with it. But it’s been rolled up and carefully stored for the last 9 years– it needs a large display area that will do it justice! A gorgeous example of Ethiopian art.

The covers are wooden boards covered with decorated leather- brown on the outside red to the inner covers. An added attraction is the early cloth inside the boards. I don't presume to be knowledgeable on early religion but to me this is truly beautiful. And I'm sure, rare. The book constitutes a total of 280 hand written pages- 140 leaves. And all Vellum. The pages are generally very good with later annotations from previous owners- also some pages have been repaired with stitching where a page may have been torn. A couple or so pages have a hole on the page. How that would have occurred I don't know. Any faults should be seen in my images. Ancient Ethiopian Coptic Hand Written Bible Leaf. On goatskin vellum with red illuminations on both sides. Written in Ge'ez. These leaves were originally hand stitched between covers of clay tablets. Later hand carved covers of wood were used instead of clay. Originating in Egypt, the Christianization of Abyssinia(Ethiopia) took place in the early Fourth century. The earliest Ge'ez documents date from that period. The language ceased to be used as a spoken language before the year 1000, but it continues to this day to be used as the official written language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In written form these handwritten Bible leaves were produced from the fourth century through the mid-1800's so they can be very difficult to date. The subject of these"Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of an older age within, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded, browned, stained and aged, as shown, bound in hand sewn and attached wooden boards, wrapped in an attractive well worn and colorful fabric wrap. ... moreWe could loosely guess this one originated sometime c1700- late 1800s, with wear to the vellum as an indicator; the wraps probably newer, c1850-1900s. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces. Combined with what looks to be the Psalms of David. Written in red/black, as shown, the red indicating sacred words spoken by the savior. The Bible also includes a few crudely drawn native icons at the rear, with a few examples as shown in the pics. This example is bound in square wooden boards. Fabric wrapped; the covers tied through with twine with a leather cover on the spine, with some loss to the fabric. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, notable water damage and warping, and more, which is normal for these rare gems; this one undoubtedly hundreds of years old. There are 88 leaves/176 pages in this, as shown. There is also some interesting marginalia, as shown ion the pics, undoubtedly newer in origin, but again, in Ge'ez. The vellum animal skin shows some discoloration and wrinkles. Especially around the edges of the page, due to age, water damage, and liturgical use over the centuries. Also notice the difference between the small black hair follicle marks on the"hair" side and the very smooth"skin" side of the vellum, which is often not flat but wrinkled. It should be pointed out that the series of vertical pin-prick holes in the vellum in the outer margin were made as a guide to the scribe for the placement and alignment of each line. The size is about 4 3/4 in. x 6 in. T hese two sheets contain a total of twelve(12) red lluminated letters. On the last page of the manuscript there appears to have been some sort of text like a colophon(columns 2. Lower half) but it has been effaced. Only a few letters are legible. It may be possible to draw out the text through the use of infrared imaging, but perhaps not. If it ever comes into my hands, we will try to do that. Finally. The dating of the manuscript can be fixed only on paleographic grounds since there are no historical notes or colophons remaining in the manuscript. The paleographical indicators point rather strongly towards the latter part of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries.
