The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,

Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Bible Vellum Latin Plainsong Apostl James 1450's
Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Bible Vellum Latin Plainsong Apostl James 1450's Up for auction is a very neat old Illuminated plainsong manuscript. It is written in a Dead Latin Langauge but at one time I had it partly translated but I forgot what it said. I know not very bright on my part. But I do remember that it is a plainsong about the apostle James. It is hand done on vellum. It is 2 sided the front is the begining of the song and the back is the end. It is framed in heavy glass on both sides there are 2 screws with just and old cord hooked on it to hang it from but it works. Pages are about 24 by 17. Because of the weight and size of this shipping will be around $30 to $40 depending on where you live.

1494 Incunabula Medieval Latin Mammotrectus Bible Leaf with Rubricator's Red Ink
First of all. I must mention that this particular leaf of the 1494 Latin Bible has a very interesting watermark in the paper, located in the left center margin, consisting of a design that looks kind of like a open mouth with a long tongue coming out! O n auction is a leaf in Black Letter(Gothic) type from a Latin work by Johannes Marchesinus entitled"Mammotrectus. It was published in Strasbourg in 1494 by the printer. Martin Flach. This is just thirty-nine years after Gutenberg's work of 1455! By definition, an incunabulum(the singular of"incunabula" or"incunable" French) or"inkunabel" German) must be printed from 1455 to 1500. However, those books printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s, as well as the year 1500(which is technically the last year of the 15th century) had more and more woodcut printed ... moreinitials. In Latin. The term"incunabula" means"baby clothes" or"things of the cradle, and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in the development of anything. This leas has red rubrication marks all added by a scribe's own hand. The size of the quarto sheet is 5 1/2 in. x 8 in. T his is a unique incunable of the popular and academic work known as Mammotrectus super Bibliam. Which means“The Breast-Feeding Milk[The Basics] about the Bible" or"The Nourisher upon the Bible. The Mammotrectus is an early guide to understanding the text of the Bible and was very popular with preachers in the later Middle Ages. It explained difficult words in the Scriptures. Both etymologically and grammatically, and provided explanations of the festivals of the Church year, the legends of the saints, and various liturgical texts. It was especially used within the Franciscan order for semantic and liturgical instruction of the novices. The heading(on the verso side) has in Latin"Secundus Machabeorum. which means"The Book of Second Maccab ees. The heading(on the recto side) has in Latin"Fo[lium] CLI. which means"Sheet#151. This lea

And came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. This is amazing! A very large leaf in Black Letter(Gothic) type from a Latin Vulgate Bible published in Venice in 1483 by the printer. Johannes Herbort. It is outstanding edition of the Latin Bible, one of the Fontiubus ex Graecis editions, a series of corrected Latin Bibles, which claim for themselves-apparently with justice-a superiority above all contemporary edition, according to Darlow and Moule, vol. II, p. 911. This is just twenty-eight years after Gutenberg's ... more1st Bible of 1455! By definition, an incunabulum(the singular of"incunabula" or"incunable" French) or"inkunabel" German) must be printed from 1455 to 1500. However, those books printed in the later 1480s and the 1490s, as well as the year 1500(which is technically the last year of the 15th century) had more and more woodcut printed initials. In Latin. The term"incunabula" means"baby clothes" or"things of the cradle, and can refer to the earliest stages or first traces in the development of anything. This leaf has rubrication done all by a scribe's own hand in blue ink. Red ink, and yellow ink; there are scores of marks, underlinings, and flourishes on this leaf. The colors are strong and fresh-loo king. On both sides of the leaf. Size of the sheet is about 8 in. x 11 in. The heading has"Regum III" which means"The Book of First Kings. T his leaf has two(2) large handwritten initial letters: 1 with blue ink and 1 with red ink(see the scanned images) This leaf contains I Kings. Chapter 18-20. We need to put into context the work of Christian scribes during the last 2.000 years. During these centuries scribe

The inside margin contains subject-headings, references and variants; the outside margin contains notes Leaf Size: 195 x 130 mm Famous Printer ROBERT STEPHANUS He was born in Paris France in 1503 and died in 1559 in ... moreGeneva Switzerland. He is well respected as an important scholar but also a printer particularly to the King of France. His father founded the printing firm and Robert became head in 1526. In 1527-28 he printed his first Bible in Latin. Anton Koberger(Born circa 1440/1445– died October 3. 1513) was a German goldsmith, printer and publisher who printed and published the Nuremberg Chronicle. A landmark of incunabula, and was a successful bookseller who sold and distributed works ... morefrom other printers. In 1470 Koberger founded and operated the first printing house in Nuremberg, Germany. Koberger’s printing business eventually operated with twenty-four presses capable of printing numerous works simultaneously. There is a great variety of subjects discussed, some of them greater, and others of less importance: discovering, as might also be expected, a diversity of talent and research. But altogether this work contains much important information relating to the Scriptures and many philological illustrations of its phraseology. 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false: Bid with Confidence. 1 Leaf of 1567 Vulgate Latin Bible New Testament Paul's Letter to the Romans
First of all. When one hears about a textual variant in the Bible. The reaction should not be"I've never heard of that before! or"That's not in my King James Version of the Bible! but rather it should be, What is it that the Apostle Paul originally wrote in the letter to the Romans? Paul’s strong and well-known statement at Romans 1:16 is: For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first. And also to the Greek. The wording of the King James Version(KJV) has been followed. Except for the words“of Christ” which appear after“the gospel” in the KJV. There are two main versions of the text of Romans 1:16; those that say“I am not ashamed of the gospel” and those that say“I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. Before we look at the manuscript support ... morefor each side. We first need to look at context of what Paul says. At Romans 1:9. Just seven verses earlier, Paul says: For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son. So he here refers to“the gospel of God’s Son” or“the gospel of the Son of God. Accordingly. In Romans 1:16 there is no need to say any more than“the gospel, since the term“gospel” to a Christian means the good news about salvation through Jesus Christ. Later in this same epistle Paul uses the term“the gospel of God” Rom. 15:16) and“the gospel of Christ” Rom. 15:19) Where both of the wordings are firm in the manuscript tradition without variation. However. Here at Romans 1:16 there is great variation. The simpler statement“I am not ashamed of the gospel” is strongly supported by the 6 th century papyrus#26. The important Greek uncials Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Alexandrinus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Ephraemi, the original hand of Codex Bezae, some minuscule manuscripts, the Old Latin, Jerome’s Latin Vulgate( as seen here in the 3rd and 8th scanned images. Right margin) The Syriac, and the Coptic(both Sahidic and Bohairic) This is very strong and early and varied support indee
