Antique 108 YEAR OLD White House Cook Book 1905 Edith Carew Roosevelt
This week I am starting to sell my collection of White House Cookbooks This book is dated 1905 and is sponsored by then First Lady Edith Carew Roosevelt. The binding is weak between the cover and the first page. The pictures accurately show the condition. The pages are brown with age and the poor quality paper of this early edition. There are numerous engravings of the interior of the white house at that time, the First Lady working in the kitchen and one of prior First Ladies. I have eight more of these cookbooks, different years of publication from 1903 back to 1888 and will entertain an offer for the lot if anyone is so inclined. From"The White House Cookbook History" by Cookbook Addict: The very first White House Cook Book was published in 1887 by a lady named Fanny Lemia Gillette. She had been compiling what would become one ... moreof the most important cookbooks to date for many years. Inside are recipes for cosmetics to cleaners. How-to's on hospitality to child rearing. Everything the lady of the house from the Victorian era ought to know. It's great tips on almost every topic made this cookbook a favorite for brides-to-be. Besides having some engravings of a few of the first ladies it lacks any of the facts about the White House itself. Later editions featured Hugo Ziemann. The White House Steward as a co-author who included facts and illustrations of the famous house. Most of the editions include a picture the current first lady at the time of printing that was, on the frontispiece of the book. They have amazing illustrations showing the interior of the white house that included presidential table settings and all of the classic famous presidential rooms. The very early editions are incredibly hard to find largely due to printing on poor quality paper. Making the pages brittle and easily damaged. So quality and condition play a VERY big part in the value of this antique cookbook. A great keepsake and rare collectible from any publication date makes this a true American treasure! I am listing

Book is in good condition for being nearly 100 years old. It has a some wear and light creasing to the front cover(typical shelf wear for its age) It still has the original string through the upper left cover that was used when it was hung on the stove when purchased. The pages inside are in good condition for their age, with some light staining in places, but very readable/usable. Any woman who wishes to learn how to cook and serve delicious, wholesome dishes can do so with much less effort than would be required to master the intricacies of embroidery or the rudiments of music. She may never acquire the ability to invent new combinations or to detect the composition ... moreof a sauce or pudding by tasting it, but with the aid of the Grand Union Cook Book and by the exercise of care and patience, she may feel sure of results that will be satisfactory to herself and to those for whom she caters. One full page explains weights and measures. For instance. 2 gills equals l cup, butter the size of walnut equals l oz. the size of egg equals 2 oz. 3 c. cornmeal equals l pound; 4 c. flour equals l pound. And vintage cookbooks in particular(but also other kinds) So we will this week have MANY listings of antique books. It is hardbound and thick, dark green in color. It is worn on the outside and has the owner's name inscribed on the flyleaf. There is a newspaper clipping tucked inside, and an assortment ... moreof 4 leaf clovers also tucked inside. It has a few black and white photos for illustrations. The pages are a bit yellowed with age and the book is dusty. It has chapters on many different subjects including"serving" where we are told that"a dish of braised birds is no longer found in a wreath of cress, but is daintily garnished with tiny almond croquettes, piled cannon-ball fashion at the sides or ends, with here and there a dainty bread patty holding a teaspoonful of jelly. etc. There are also many, many recipes. This fabulous vintage cookbook is bound in brown cloth. With gilt lettering on the spine and embossing on the covers. The binding is worn at the spine edges and corners, and the color of the cloth has faded on the spine(see pictures) The pages are mostly clean, with occasional smudges and fading from age, but the print is still very easy to read. The binding is tight and square, and has held up well over time. There are many detailed black and white illustrations throughout the book, showing practical cooking tools and helpful charts.
