Written in Devanagari script on fine native hand-made polished paper. This leaf is genuine and original(not a reproduction) And is in very nice condition as seen in the photos. There is an old reinforcement along the left margin. There is some toning to the leaf- this is expected, and quite consistent with the age and use. Both sides of the leaf have six lines of text written by a skilled scribe in dense black ink. Contained within a ruled orange and black border. This leaf measures 98 x 158 mm(3 13/16 x 6 1/8” Devanagari is an alphabetic script derived from Brahmi writing in the 12-13 century. And is used to write Sanscrit and Hindi. BEAUTIFUL ETHIOPIAN BIBLE LEAF ON VELLUM: Ge'ez language is one of the Semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia in the past; and probably originated from 2 sources: The Sabaean language originated in Southern Yemen few centuries B.C; and represents an old Arabic Semitic language spoken by the famous biblical Queen of Sheba. It was also known as Himyarite language. And the second source was from Egypt during the Hyksos ruling. The Hyksos were Semitic tribes; invaded old Egypt and ruled for 400 years. When they were expelled out of Egypt they fled to Nuba. Ethiopia. And Canaan. The Christian Kingdom of Aksum(old Ethiopia) had occupied Yemen in the early centuries A.D. The Ge’ez language is a combination of the two; the Semitic and the old Ethiopian languages. Along with text. 24 lines of which span the length of the leaf, is a hand-drawn design in the lower left corner adjacent to a smaller scroll bracketing a lower paragraph of text. Top edge of leaf is close cropped and lower portion of hand-drawn design is lacking, indicating leaf is fragmentary and was likely separated along folds. This leaf has a large area of indigo black background on the thick, hand-made Mulberry paper, with the text written in silver ink. The words in the left margin probably give the title and page number. The symbol at the top of the first line(see 1st scanned image) which looks like two backwards"c" with a wavy line under and a veritcal stroke on the right-this symbol indicates the beginning of a new Sutra. First of all. There are 3 separate leaves included in this auction: 1 of handwritten manuscript in Uighur script and 2 of woodcut printed in Tibetan Buddhist script. The first leaf is early 19th century antique Uighur(or more properly. Uyghur) handwritten Buddhist manuscript leaf from Mongolia, with vertical handwritten text in 19 or 20 columns, which are read from the top to the bottom, going from the left column first and then proceeding to the right. Size is about 4 in. x 11 1/2 in. The beautiful symbol or character with RED ink. In the top left margin indicates the beginning of the Buddhist sutra(see the 1st and 2nd scanned images) Also, notice the wavy YELLOW lines in the center column of the two leaves, the significance of which is not known(see the 3rd scanned image) This leaf is mad e of hand-made paper.
