Up For Bid Looks Like Civil War Era Photo I would say its almost like a printing block but the impressions do not feel deep enough to transfer picture ... morefrom copper picture to a paper I do not know what this is and am tired of trying to find something similar to compare it to All I can tell you is that is what looks like copper mounted on a block of wood. If you take pictures from different directions it looks like a picture but another direction looks like a negative, this was found in a box of 18 to early 1900 relics that were in my family If anyone can help with a description I would greatly appreciate it. I also have one of a tent that I will be posting What is pictured is what you will recieve Picture is approx 2.5 x 3 inches I listed this as tintype. Ambrotype, daguerreotype because I felt someone with a background in these can help me out thanks for looking payment can be made through paypal. Once the payment has cleared I will promptly ship

This map has property specific detail of the area between Q Street and ... moreT Street and stretches from 16th Street to 13th Street. This area is currently known at the Shaw neighborhood(named after Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Lots of color coding to represent various attributes(white/stone building. Pink/brick building, yellow/frame building, if it looks like an envelope/a stable or shed, and black& white dotted/green house etc. Map in generally good condition(not perfect but pretty nice condition) Some browning and small chips or creases at edges. ANTIQUE BOOK MASS GEN HOSPITAL BOSTON INSANE ASYLUM CIVIL WAR GENERAL LAFAYETTE
This book is titled Extracts from MASS General Hospital 1810-1851. The book is a record of sorts of all the various meetings. Proposals, patients, etc. that occurred during this time period. There are a few references to the Civil War, including mention of a"wooden leg fund" to help wounded soldiers. Among other things, there are mentions for the need of a"Lunatic" or"Insane" asylum in the Boston area. There are many names and references. General Lafayette is mentioned as having visited with his son. Also mentioned are Col Thomas Perkins, Captain Nathaniel Fletcher, and Gen. Appleton. There is a gift inscription on one of the early interior pages: To Gen. F.H. Appleton with the compliments of Francis Blake, 12 December 1902. As noted above, the pages are loose, most unattached from the spine. The pages are somewhat ... morebrittle on the edges, but are cream to off-white in color with dark, highly legible text. The LOW lighting conditions when I took the pictures give them the yellow tint. The pages are not yellow in person. Also, you can see the shadows from the camera on the pages; the dark areas are not stains. This book will make a great addition to any collection, especially relating to Massachusetts' history or the Civil War. Please ask any questions prior to bidding. Thanks, and good luck.
1859 Old Antique Leather Pre Civil War Medical Book Anatomy Surgery Human Body
A System Of Human Anatomy by Erasmus Wilson Published by Blanchard and Lea. 1859. Containing 616 pages. Illustrated with over 397 fine medical engravings. Very good condition. Tight binding. Strong hinges. Light wear to covers. A nice speciman. Please enjoy the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. Wilson was born in London. Studied at Dartford Grammar School before St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, and at Aberdeen, and early in life became known as a skillful surgeon and dissector. It was his sympathy with the poor of London and a suggestion from Mr. Thomas Wakley of The Lancet. Of which he acted for a time as sub-editor, which first led him to take up skin diseases as a special study. The cases of scrofula, anemia, and blood-poisoning which he saw made him set to work to alleviate the suffering of persons so afflicted, ... moreand he quickly established a reputation for treating this class of patients. It was said that he treated the rich by ordering them to give up luxuries; the poor by prescribing for them proper nourishment, which was often provided out of his own pocket. In the opinion of one of his biographers, we owe to Wilson in great measure the habit of the daily bath, and he helped very much to bring the Turkish bath into use in Great Britain, and in the process writing a number of works on spas, baths and thermo-therapy, all of which overlap in their content. Indeed his works on spas. Baths, and thermo-therapy were directly related to his work on the health of skin. His earliest such works on this topic outlined the relationship between various applications of water, vapour baths, the action of heat and cold through such media on the action of the skin, and the relationship between this and health in general.4] Moreover, his works had a direct impact on the hydrotherapy movement of the time(then known as hydropathy) and the overlapping sanitary reform movement. He applauded the establishment of Public Baths and Wash-houses, as“amongst the noblest of the institutions…as they are one of th

PICTORIAL FIELD-BOOK OF CIVIL WAR Union Confederate Military ANTIQUE LEATHER
THE PICTORIAL FIELD BOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR In the United States of America. Three Volumes In One. By Benson J. Lossing. Illustrated by Many Hundred Engravings on Wood. By Lossing and Barritt, From Sketches by the Author and Others. Published in 1868 by T. Belknap& Co. Three volumes, complete set, 10” x 7” three-quarter leather with raised bands and gilt titles on spine. Illustrated with engravings and woodcuts. About 2000 pages total. Condition: Fair condition. Not a perfect set by any means. But certainly a great opportunity for a historian or researcher to acquire this rare work at a more affordable price(the last PICTORIAL FIELD-BOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR I sold on eBay closed at $499) Exteriors as shown in photos. Leather is rubbed with fraying and some minor splitting along the joints at spine ends, but all boards are FIRMLY attached. ... moreLeather tips at corners also rubbed. The bindings of all three volumes are firm although in Volumes I and III, the rear endpapers and very last page of text have come loose(due, I suspect, to a manufacturing flaw since the identical pages in both volumes have come loose) but are intact and laid in. The text in all three volumes is lightly toned/tanned. Steel-engraved plates exhibit foxing. Also, some of the steel-engraved plates featuring portraits of the Generals appear to be missing(although some still remain) Volume II has some moisture blemishing at the front of the book affecting the frontispiece and early pages. Description: This is an 1868 three-volume set of Benson J. Lossing’s PICTORIAL FIELD-BOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR. It is illustrated with hundreds of woodcut engravings: portraits. Landscapes, battle sites, forts, weapons, uniforms, maps, plans, etc. It also contains a number of full-page steel engraved plates inserted at different points throughout the text. To students of the American Revolution and the Civil War. Benson J. Lossing(1813-1891) has long been an iconic figure. At the age of 35, he had already built a strong reputation as an editor, author and engraver o

HIGHLY DESIRABLE SCARCE EDITION OF REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. 1857 This the only edition with the included statement of Secretary of War JEFFERSON DAVIS. A matter of significant controversy between the"North" and the"South" throughout the war. Fascinating Fact: Prisoners were exchanged on the following basis: 1 general = 46 privates. 1 major general = 40 privates, 1 brigadier general = 20 privates, 1 colonel = 15 privates, 1 lieutenant colonel = 10 privates, 1 major = 8 privates, 1 captain = 6 privates, 1 lieutenant = 4 privates, 1 noncommissioned officer = 2 privates. I'd look at this book as a collectible. Not as a hymnal to be used every sunday. with that in mind I would consider this book to be in display condition. those with the same thought process as a rock will want to grab the book and riffle through the pages with no consideration to the age, and historic value of the book. Dayton& Co. for the“American Bible Society” There is no date of publication, but the Preface states that it has been 200 years since this version of the Bible was published in 1610. However, the only record I could find for Bradley&Dayton was an 1861 Boston Directory. See the twenty-one(21) photos for details and condition. The Bible is complete and intact; although admittedly the covers are weakly attached to the spine. There are 3 blank sheets in the front of the Bible and one is torn across the middle. Antique 1828 Robinson Crusoe Book Rush P. Cady Gettysburg Civil War Soldier
Here's an unusual offering. This is an 1828 leather bound edition of Robinson Crusoe that was owned by Civil War Lt Rush P. Cady. Cady was a lieutenant in the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Third Oneida; Boonville Regiment; Conkling Rifles) And he died at the Battle of Gettysburg. Rush P. Cady has signed this book in pencil on the first page, along with his town, Rome(NY) The Hamilton College Library has a collection of Lt. Cady's correspondence which you can access via Internet. Here's a link: This collection includes all kinds of interesting information about Lt. Cady including a letter to his father from his commanding officer describing his honorable actions and death at"Gettysburgh" There is also a detailed description of his funeral and even of his body: the features were quite natural. But betokened ... moremuch suffering. The book has some condition issues as pictured. Overall it looks good for a book of 185 years. But the cover is becoming separated from the spine and the spine has lost it's top layer(there is no title left on the spine) The pages have some spots of discoloration. There are many corners bent, as this is how Lt. Cady would mark where he left off in his reading. It is a small volume, we do not know if Lt. Cady took it to war with him, but the book came from an estate that contained several of his personal items that he used in adulthood, and he died at age 22, so it seems quite possible. Please contact me with any questions or comments. Thanks!

1865 U.S. CONSTITUTION & DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE Book CIVIL WAR-ERA Antique
Up for auction is a very rare edition of the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES and the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Published in Boston by Taggard& Thompson. No copyright date, but the last amendment in the book is the Thirteenth Amendment, which was ratified in 1865 and abolished slavery. The Fourteenth Amendment was not ratified until 1868. This publisher was active during this period, and I imagine this small pocket-sized copy of the Constitution and Declaration was published on the occasion of the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, an event recently chronicled in the film, LINCOLN. Most likely published in 1865, and certainly not after 1868. An edition similar to this was published by Taggard& Thompson and dated 1865; it featured the title"Charter of American Liberty" on the front cover instead of the design found ... morehere. It also went up only until the 13th Amendment. Constitution runs 36 pages. And Declaration runs 12. Bound in dark brown cloth with copper-stamped title on front cover flanking a winged eagle holding a ribbon which reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Identical image blind-stamped on rear. A small book, that measures 3-1/2” x 5-1/2”. Cloth on spine wearing away, but all intact, and hinges firm. No writing inside. Overall in GOOD PLUS condition. Very rare. The “E PLURIBUS UNUM” design suggests that this was published either before the end of the Civil War or shortly thereafter. Good luck! Powered by

1857 NEGRO SLAVERY African Antique SOUTHERN SLAVE TRADE Civil War SOUTH Book CSA
THE IMPENDING CRISIS OF THE SOUTH T his auction is for an original 1857 edition of" THE IMPENDING CRISIS OF THE SOUTH: HOW TO MEET IT" written by Hinton Rowan Helper. Of North Carolina. YOU'LL APPRECIATE THIS BOOK! I t condemns the institution of slavery. Advocating the notion that slavery hurt the economic prospects of non-slaveholders, and was an impediment to the growth of the entire region of the South. T he author. Helper. As proud a Southerner as anyone could be, begged and pleaded his fellow citizens of the South to read this book. The South being his birth place and his home, and his ancestors residing there for over a century, he hoped that his fellow Southerners would read it and reflect upon it as he put it out there: an honest and faithful endeavor to treat a subject of enormous import, without rancor or prejudice, ... moreby one who had a deep seated hope that the Flag of Freedom would fly triumphantly alike"over the valleys of Virginia and the mounds of Mississippi. H elper claims that slavery actually hurts the Southern economy overall(by preventing economic development and industrialization) And is the main reason why the South has progressed so much less than the North(according to the results of the 1850 census and other verifiable factual measures) since the late 18th century. H elper did not take what he considered to be an ineffectually sentimental or moralistic abolitionist approach. As seen in Uncle Tom's Cabin, and instead tried to use hard facts to convince readers of the wrongs of slavery. D edicated to the"non-slaveholding whites" of the South. This book might have passed unnoticed if Northern opponents of slavery had not reprinted it, leading to a furor in parts of the South, where authorities banned its possession and distribution and burned copies that could be seized. B etween 1857 and 1861 nearly 150.000 copies of the book were circulated, and in 1860 the Republican party distributed it as a campaign document. T he success of"The Impending Crisis"

1896 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Negro Slavery Civil War BLACK AMERICANA Antique Book RARE
UNCLE TOM'S CABIN A TALE OF LIFE AMONG THE LOWLY* HARRIET BEECHER STOWE* T his auction is for an original ca. 1896 edition of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by the wonderful Harriet Beecher Stowe. With NEW ILLUSTRATIONS. Published by The Sunday School Union of London. YOU'LL TRULY APPRECIATE THIS BOOK! U ncle Tom is an enduring icon even today because he was drawn. Painted, and inscribed in prints; he was embodied onstage, in photographs, and in motion pictures; his representation was continually refitted to changing social, political, and economic strategies of mainstream America. W hen Uncle Tom's Cabin; or. Life among the Lowly was first published in 1852. No one—least of all its author, Harriet Beecher Stowe—expected the book to become a sensation. But this antislavery novel took the world by storm. It was to become the ... moresecond best-selling book in the world during the nineteenth century, second only to the Bible, and it touched off a flurry of criticism and praise. S towe had written the novel as an angry response to the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Law. Which punished those who aided runaway slaves and diminished the rights of fugitive as well as freed slaves. Hoping to move her fellow Americans to protest this law and slavery in general, Stowe attempted to portray"the institution of slavery just as it existed. Indeed, Uncle Tom's Cabin was nearly unique at the time in its presentation of the slaves' point of view. S everal stories intertwine throughout Uncle Tom’s Cabin. But they all center on two main plots. One plot focuses on the Harris family, the other on Uncle Tom. S towe's novel tells the stories of three slaves— Tom, Eliza. And George—who start out together in Kentucky. But whose lives take different turns. Eliza and George, who are married to each other but owned by different masters, manage to escape to free territory with their little boy, Harry. Tom is not as fortunate. M r. Shelby was a considerate master. But he m

In this book Stroyer give us, with a most simple and effective realism, the inside view of the institution of slavery from his first hand experience. J acob Stroyer was born a slave on the Singleton plantation near Columbia. South Carolina in 1849 and lived there until the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863. As a child, Stroyer helped care for the plantation's horses and mules, which were sold soon after his master's death. He then worked ... morebriefly in a carpenter's shop and as a field hand. During the Civil War, he was sent to Sullivan's Island and Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, where he waited on Confederate officers. While there, Stroyer learned to read. Following his release from slavery. Jacob Stroyer settled in Salem, Massachusetts, and became minister of the African Methodist Episcopal Church there. My Life in the South was written with the hope of generating enough income to complete his education. T he first section of the narrative covers his fifteen years in slavery. It provides information about his family. Describes life at his master's summer seat, and discusses the physical abuse he endured at the hands of the Singleton plantation's overseer. Stroyer also discusses the emotional strain that the slave trade put on his and other slave families. The rest of the narrative is a series of brief anecdotes about slave life, culture, beliefs, and interactions with masters and slaves. This edition bound in pictorial wraps is the new and enlarged edition, expanding upon earlier editions with even more detail of Stroyer’s account. 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false: Bid with Con

1886 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Black Americana SLAVERY African US Civil War ANTIQUE BOOK
1886 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN === NEW EDITION === T his auction is for an original 1886 EDITION of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special NEW EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. U pon publication. Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book elicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged ... morefrom forcing a bookseller in Mobile. Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself(including a package containing a slave's severed ear) The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years, the negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin were sold. The book eventually became the best-selling novel in the world during the 19th century(and the second best-selling book after the Bible) With the book being translated into every major language. Uncle Tom's Cabin sold equally well in Eng
