ITEM DESCRIPTION: This auction is for an original illuminated manuscript leaf from a book of hours. Although not an expert. I believe it to have been made in France during the second half of the fifteenth century(1400s) Measuring roughly 7 ½ inches high by 5 ½ inches wide. The document retains what appear to be full, original margins. It is generally well preserved aside from some rubbing to the lettering and a very small amount of adhesive residue along the top edge of one side. Book and palm frond(from the Suffrages to the Saints) Not all Books of Hours included a section dedicated to the Suffrages but, when present, the section usually appears near the end of the volume. The section normally presents the commemorated saints in accordance with a strict traditional hierarchy. The exquisite miniature contains a myriad of colors and both painted and burnished gold. St. Barbara's clothes in red. Blue and white highlighted with gold, her halo in gold. The background with green trees and hills, and further in the distance a castle. The sky in several shades of blue. The border includes acanthus leaves, fine tendrils with burnished ... moregold leaves, flowers, berries, a grotesque and bird. A four-line illuminated"D" in blue, red and gold begins the prayer"Domine labia mea aperies" Lord, open my lips" Latin bastarda script written in brown ink with distinguished text in red. Verso has additional text with a two-line illuminated letter"D" in blue and gold, and a beautiful right edge border with acanthus leaves and flowered vines in blue, green and gold. Illuminated Manuscript leaf from Book of Hours. Ca 1470, vellum, Latin, Paris. Recto: Beautiful 7-line historiated initial"D" showing the Virgin Mary and Twelve Apostles(Pentecost) from a richly decorated Book of Hours(from the Hours of the Holy Spirit- Matins) Miniature painting in many colors with liquid gold highlights. And burnished gold around the miniature itself. Size: 1 1/4" x 1 3/8" Sixteen line latin manuscript written with brown ink in a batarde script with important text in red(for emphasis or instruction) A 1-line letter"E" in red, blue and gold. Superb border with acanthus leaves in blue and gold, vines with green leaves and flowers of a variety of types and colors. There are two drolleries depicted in the lower border. Vellum Leaf from A Book Of Hours. 15th Cent. Illuminated/Gold Initials. Framed This auction is for a small late 15th century velum manuscript leaf from a Book of Hours. I purchased it from a dealer many years ago and had it framed between two sheets of UV glass so that I can view both sides of the somewhat translucent page. Which is apparent in the photos(you can see the writing showing through from the opposite side, especially in one of the photos when I held the frame up to a window and took the shot. The frame, a decorative frame with gold highlights, dimensions are approximately 13" x 11" The framer's points and unfinished frame are visible on the obverse side. There are 8 illuminated initials on the front and 7 illuminated/colored initials on the back(obverse) side. I do not have a translation of the text. I'm needing ... moreto downsize! Complete 12 leaf Calendar of Saints from a Book of Hours. 1460 AD, Latin, France, vellum. Splendidly illuminated complete Calendar of Saints with original binding on the left edge. Top left side of leaves as well as left side of recto with beautiful borders of acanthus leaves. Vines and flowers in many different colors and small gold highlights. Each month has a gold outlined box enclosing a 3-line"KL" abbreviation for kalends from which our word calendar is derived) Inside the gold border are designs of many colors filling the space around the initials. Leaves are written in 17-lines of red and dark brown batarde script. The leaves are joined by the original binding material. Dimensions: 5 in. x 3 3/8 in. Calendars in Books of Hours were used to tell time. But differently than calendars of today. They did not do so by enumerating ... morethe day of the month(1,2…31) but by citing the feast that was celebrated on a particular day. Today when we refer to Christmas Day, St.Valentine’s Day, Halloween, etc. we know we are talking about December 25, February 14, October 31 and so on. The feasts listed in medieval Calendars are mostly saints’ days(commemorating when the saints were martyred) Other feasts commemorate important events in the lives of Christ and the Virgin. In the Calendar leaves for sale here, the majority are written in dark ink, while the more important are written in red. Some feast days were universal(celebrated by the medieval Catholic Church as a whole) while others were appropriate to a particular location where the manuscript was intended for use. For example, midway down the recto of the first leaf for January you see Epiphania do(mini) in red, an important feast day for the Church. There are many other aspects of the medieval Calendar indicated by the three columns prior to the identification of the feast days. However I will leave their rather complicated definitions to the successful purchaser of the leaves.

Beautiful ceramic tile. Good condition. 7 7/8" square tile. Felt backing has a hole for hanging but someone has strengthened it with a wire hanger. The original drawing was inspired by a 15th Century Illuminated Book of Hours. The colors are hand-screened and fired for permanence. Label reads The Berggren, Shelton, Trayner corp. The book of hours has its ultimate origin in the Psalter. Which monks and nuns were required to recite. By the 12th century this had developed into the breviary, with weekly cycles of psalms, prayers, hymns, antiphons, and readings which changed with the liturgical season. Eventually a selection of texts was produced in much shorter volumes and came to be called a book of hours. Many books of hours were made for women. There is some evidence that they were sometimes given as a wedding present ... morefrom a husband to his bride. Frequently they were passed down through the family. As recorded in wills. Although the most heavily illuminated books of hours were enormously expensive. A small book with little or no illumination was affordable much more widely, and increasingly so during the 15th century. The earliest surviving English example was apparently written for a laywoman living in or near Oxford in about 1240. It is smaller than a modern paperback but heavily illuminated with major initials, but no full-page miniatures. By the 15th century, there are also examples of servants owning their own Books of Hours. In a court case from 1500, a pauper woman is accused of stealing a domestic servant's prayerbook. Very rarely the books included prayers specifically composed for their owners. But more often the texts are adapted to their tastes or sex, including the inclusion of their names in prayers. Some include images depicting their owners, and some their coats of arms.
