It was written by Thomas T. Smiley. A.M. M.D. It was published in Philadelphia by Thomas K. Greenbank. The date on the title page is 1834 and on the reverse is 1831. It is beautifully bound in soft brown tooled leather. It has raised hubs and a gold stamped title on the spine. It has very nice hand made end papers as shown. It has 3 hand colored fold out maps. It is also"embellished with nearly one hundred engravings, illustrative of heathen deities, of nations ... moreand countries mentioned in Scripture, and of the subsequent history and present state of those countries. The first 12 pages are advertisements from the publisher for"Cheap and Valuable Publications. One of the ads is for this book and I have included some pictures of the ad. Antique 17th C. French Country Book Bible Stand Lectern Original Paint
I am relisting this item because I have come to believe it is older than I first thought; I think it is from the 17th rather than the 18th century. Hand planed and carved wood. Wood peg construction, and fabulous old paint distinguish this French flea market find. The decoration features the Jesuit symbol, with IHS, three thorns below and typical Jesuit cross above the initials. IHS stands for the Holy Name of Jesus; the letters are a Latinization of the first three letter of Jesus' name in Greek. The laurel wreath became associated with Napoleon in the early 19th century. But was used throughout history as a symbol of victory in battle. Usually the Jesuit symbols are surrounded by a circle of sun rays. There may be a special meaning in the unusual combination of symbols here, or it may simply have been the artisan's choice. The figures ... morein the four quadrants may indicate the year 1697, although the"1" and the"6" followed as they are by initials, may be letters. I would love to discover the meaning of all of these symbols. But even without interpretation, the painted decoration on this piece is simply beautiful. The colors are rich and fairly give off light under the warm waxy patina of centuries of use. Photos cannot do this beautiful object justice. It would be a fine Bible or book stand. And would be wonderful as a cookbook stand in the kitchen. Lectern is 15" wide. 9" tall. Original paint on all surfaces, with some wear but very little loss. Here is a very RARE collectible.Tercentenary Commemoration of the Authorized Version of The English Bible. 1611- 1911. Miniature Model- 6.5 inches tall. Holds a lambskin bound bible chained to a lectern. The original box binding is included. Bibles wee so rare in olden times it was necessary to chain them to lecterns and other places. The chain is a facsimile of what may be seen in Hereford and other cathedrals and parish churches all over the country. The bible can easily be read with a magnifying glass, which is supplied. Antique Industrial Iron and Mahogany Dictionary Bible Book Stand 1900s
19th century book stand by L.W. NOYES. CHICAGO embossed in the cast iron book rack of this stand. see pic) Adjustable angles. Measures 42in tall x 19in wide. A retrofitted spring has been implemented on the left leaf to hold the rack open. It does not spring shut however but manually folds closed. Works fine to hold books in place and is fully functional for large map books and dictionaries. Light scuffs in the mahogny of the panel leafs but these can be waxed/polished away. This stand does not come apart so it is all one piece as a piece of furniture. Here is a killer genuine real deal bible from 1865. This bible was printed during the War between the states. The pages appear intact and attached and the interior of the bible looks fantastic for its age. It still retains the gold gilded edges on the pages. Almost 150 years old. Might even be Cherry. No chips, cracks or breaks, nice and solid/sturdy little table.
