I have been in the business for 50 years -- this is the first time I have come across such a complete pharmacist or physician's recipe box for all types ... moreof drugs and cures. This journal is dating from 1826 and is entitled Formulae Medicamentorium A Compendium of the Modern Practical Physic 1826. This is bound in its original leather marbelized cardboard binding. This has an extraordinary amount of remedies, cures, and compounds of herbs. Also, there are cutouts from newspapers and periodicals posted here and there throughout the journal. There is everything from cough remedies upward. Practical recipes for waterproofing from boots to curing or treating diphtheria. One of the most interesting ledgers I have handled this entire time. We are selling this as we found it out of the estate. Invaluable information.

If you’ve already read these first two paragraphs go to the red highlighted paragraph as that is where my description begins) EBay is now telling their sellers that they cannot use any outside links that have anything to do with selling(and believe me it’s hard to find ones that don’t) So if you’ve followed my listings you know I use a lot of web links because they help to describe the people. Places and events that these antique diaries talk about. With that said I think my descriptions are going to be quiet different as I have to be very selective on which web links to put in; if any. I need to say this too and that is Ebay is getting so tight, controlling and expensive and they are pushing me into finding a different way of selling my items. Sorry if I sound frustrated. Secondly and more important I want to say that on a weekly basis I ... moreget questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… I finally want to mention that it is illegal by EBay’s rules to copy all or any part of the description here for purposes of selling elsewhere. Their policy is listed here; http:pages.ebay.com/help/policies/image-text.html I have no problem at all with anyone purchasing my item and reselling it. However my description that I’ve worked hours on is not allowed to be copied by anyone for the above purposes. The main reason I write this is because I was contacted about a listing where someone had copied

1927 HANDWRITTEN DIARY Cape Cod Brookline Boston Norfolk Massachusetts History
1927 HANDWRITTEN DIARY- I am always intrigued by diaries that were written by the wealthy, especially those of teenage young women as their entries are so captivating. This is one of those amazing diaries! This INCREDIBLE SPECTACULAR 86 YEAR OLD handwritten antique diary/ journal/ manuscript book was written by a young 14 year old woman named MILDRED BELL and she lived in BROOKLINE. NORFOLK COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS. Mildred was the daughter of Henry C. Anna F Bell, and she had an older brother named Harry. Her father was wealthy and according to census records. He sold real estate. Mildred was a very popular girl who had a lot of friends. She attended Brookline High School. And in the summer. She and her mother went to live at their summer home at"The Cape" Her father would come down to see them from time to time, but most of the summer ... moreshe was able to just hang out and have oodles of fun with her many friends. Some of the locations she mentions in her entries are: Newton ~ Newtonville ~ Beaconsfield ~ Alston ~ Plymouth ~ Sandwich ~ Cambridge ~ Lynn ~ Westboro ~ Riverside ~ Eastham ~ Orleans ~ Everett ~ Provinctown ~ Dedham ~ Brookline ~ Nausel ~ and there are many others! This is a VERY RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window Into Massachusetts& American History! Such an amazing diary! It's so interesting to read about the life of this young teenager, and her entries make the reader wish they were her friend because she had so much fun! She was a typical girl who worried about her grades in school, and she went to parties. Dances, and she loved to ice-skate! But when school let out for the summer, she and her mother packed their things and went to Cape Cod. and that's when Mildred really let loose! She would hang out with her many friends at the beach nearly every day, and have tons of fun! She went swimming. Learned to drive a car, and they would pack up to 9 in the car and go out cruising on the back roads just being crazy& silly. And have fun! And th

1953- 1954 HANDWRITTEN DIARY- If you like diaries that will take you back in time, those that were written by fun-loving carefree high school gals with detailed entries and heartfelt emotions. That include a photograph of the author, then this is the diary for you! This AMAZING 60 YEAR OLD handwritten vintage diary/ journal/ manuscript book was written by BERNICE EVELYN BECK who was in the senior class in High School when she wrote it, and I believe she was attending some kind of boarding school. Bernice lived in HOUSTON. HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS. She traveled at times for speaking arrangements. And apparently she was very good because she received so many requests. She had to turn some down! My research shows that she attended the University of Houston. She married ALVIS VERNIE LONG on May 7. 1966 in Harris County. Texas, when she was 29 years ... moreold. T his diary is WONDERFUL! One of the things that makes this diary very special, is that she expresses many emotions in her entries! And included is a photograph of Bernice that was tucked between the pages! I also found a yearbook photo of her while she was attending the University. This is a VERY RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window Into Texas& American History! Diaries from Texas are always a treat to find because for some reason. They are less common than those from the eastern states. Bernice's entries start while in Mexico with friends on school break. And then she returns to Texas and starts school again. She is in love with"Gus" And he is quite worried of losing her to another guy. I guess he had good reason to be worried. Since she married someone else! This diary measures 5 1/4" x 6 1/2" It has only 63 entries. But still I found it entertaining to read, especially since she expresses her innermost emotions in her entries! The diary has dark brown smoke marks consistant with being in a fire. And it has tape repairs. if only it could talk. I'm sure it would have a lot of stories to tell! And I don't know about you, but I always love

1850 Handwritten Diary -Lake Mich Schooner to Oconto, WI, Works in Logging Camp
Charles D. Shoemaker. The author of this diary, lived in Joliet Illinois. In the year 1850, he traveled by schooner from Chicago to Oconto, Wisconsin to work in a logging camp. This was not his first trip to Oconto. There is a brief description of a previous trip at the beginning of the diary. At the time of this diary. Logging was on it's way to becoming the leading industry in Wisconsin. It was hard, dangerous and poorly paid work, laborers made between 12- 25 dollars per month. The trees were felled in the winter months, cut and taken by teams to the river, then sent downstream to mills in the spring when the ice began to melt What is so fascinating about this diary is that the author made notes about working in each phase of the logging process. He left Joliet on October 21, 1850 and did not return until September 22, 1851, having ... morespent almost a full year working in the logging camp. During the author's 5 day trip on Lake Michigan. He noted the day and time they passed cities and landmarks- Waukegan, Milwaukee, So Washington, Sheboygan, Manitouwec. He also mentioned passing through the"door" which was Deaths Door, the site of many shipwrecks. He began work sawing the day after he arrived. He also had some other jobs: Nov 7. 1850.Went on board the brig Mary and got a boat load of corn. The Mill stood still. Nov 21.Left the Upper Mill in the morning. Went up to where we left the boat last night and found it frozen. We went down to the Steam Mill again and 9 of us brought a load of corn to the Upper Mill on a scow boat. Nov 23.Took a scow load of lumber out to the vessel. Was all day getting out into the Bay through the ice. Got unloaded two hours after dark. The wind blew like the devil into shore. We cast the scow boat loose from the vessel and went ashore locomotive speed. Dark and rainy and we got caught on a lee shore. Took the yawl and found the mouth of the river. Got to the Steam Mill at ten oclock at night. The following week. Mr Shoemaker wrote of taking a load of

Membership declined sharply. You can read about the it all here: http:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Klan There are many names mentioned in Hallie's entries. 1924 Handwritten Diary White Star Line Ship Majestic Trip to Ireland Dungarvan
I want to say that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. And with that said… I also need to mention that it is illegal by EBay’s rules to copy all or any part of the description here for purposes of selling ... moreelsewhere. Their policy is listed here; http:pages.ebay.com/help/policies/image-text.html I have no problem at all with anyone purchasing my item and reselling it. However my description that I’ve worked hours on is not allowed to be copied by anyone for the above purposes. The main reason I write this is because I was contacted about a listing where someone had copied my exact auction and tried to sell a diary that they didn’t even have. It ended up being a fraudulent auction and I’m thankful they caught it in time. Thank you so much for your understanding. Up for auction today is a 77 page handwritten diary that was kept by a woman who sailed on the great ocean liner“Majestic” in 1924. When I was looking for a photo or web site to share with you about the Majestic I found this INCREDIBLE VIDEO taken in 1931 of the Majestic. http:www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP46USxORgQ Now the diary of course was written 7 years earlier but to know our author walked the decks of this ship shown in the video is so surreal to me. The trip starts on June 28 th leaving New York Harbor and then ends on August 16 th while still at sea. The first 7 pages of the diary are written while on board t

1861 Handwritten Civil War Era Diary Journal -Stanley-Attleboro Ma 7th Regiment
The author of this diary was a young woman who was either 17 or 22 years old. Depending on which census record you look at. Her name is not written in the book, but I am quite sure her first name was Sylvia. On one page someone wrote"Sylvia, you did not write in your diary today" On another page, she wrote at the bottom a few times the name"Sylvia Stanley" What is confusing is that the young man she was interested in and eventually married was named Stephen Stanley, but census records show that his parentage was different then that of Sylvia. To make matters even more confusing, there is the name Artemas Stanley, Camp Old Coloney, Company, Taunton Ma written on the last page of the diary. According to early Mass census records, this young man had different parentage than either Stephen or Sylvia. All three are listed as ... moreliving in Attleboro, Ma. Artemas Stanley volunteered in 1861, was in the Mass 7th Regiment, and died of illness in 1862. I am quite sure that the 19 yr old Stephen the author wrote about was the Steven Stanley who belonged to the 7th Regiment from Massachusetts. This regiment was stationed at Camp Brightwood at Washington DC in 1861. Sylvia wrote of Stephen being sent to Washington DC and of sending him letters there. She wrote: July 12. 1861.Attleboro Volunteers left for Washington. Hope they will all arrive safe! On one page in the diary. There is a drawing of the flag, and written underneath: The Star Spangled Banner In triumph shall wave Ore the land of the free And the home of the brave When this you see Remember your soger boy Steve Sylvia mentioned having discussions about the war with her friends. She also wrote of Steven and other men going to Taunton. Which is where they went to volunteer. She wrote of the Attleboro Volunteers in their uniforms and of bands playing in town. Very early in the war she wrote: April 25.A great Battle fought- two lives lost- Northerners carried the day. May 17.Very pleasant but cold. Worked all day. Company marched to Attleboro by
Antique Diary 1922 Handwritten Vintage Journal Life as a Teenage Girl Full Year
Nice vintage diary journal from 1922. The Standard Diary 1922" is stated on the cover page. Pages prior to the journal entries show the current calendar. Postage rates(interesting) Rate of Income on Stocks, Interest Laws of all the States, Population charts, Eclipses, Weight Per Bushel of Grain, Antidotes For Poisons, Weather Signals, Public Holidays, Standard Time, Tide Table, Important Dates of the World War, Moon Phases for each month. The journal pages are in the center and mostly full. There is an address sheet toward the back that is filled in with names from Rye. NY, Waterville and Augusta, Maine, and Davenport, Iowa. Interesting to see what life was like for a young girl in 1922. I only read a few pages and it struck me that this wasn't even 100 years ago but so many things have changed. Just about everything. Any questions. ... moreJust let me know. Thank you.
1929 Handwritten Diary with Poem "Within My Diary" Orleans Co VT Newport by Lake
I’m not quite sure of the name of this young girl who wrote this 1929 diary but I can tell you she lived in or around Orleans County Vermont. I’m not sure which village or town but here are the places she mentions(and I believe some of them are in Canada as she is very close to the boarder) Plymouth. Newport. Richmond Hill. Derby Line and Derby Center. St. Johnsbury, Seymour Lake. Island Pond and Northfield. I believe it’s one of those towns close to a lake because she’s always mentioning ice skating on the lake. Planes landing on the lake, etc. I think she’s a high school girl or perhaps a little younger. The diary is completely full of handwritten entries for everyday and long ones too. I want to start off with a wonderful poem she has written in the back about diary keeping… WITHIN MY DIARY There’s nothing left for me of days that use ... moreto be. I live in memory within my diary. Some written words of old. Some writing not so bold. It’s worth its weight in gold, in my small diary. Within its covers brown. Various secrets written down and over them I frown to give me consolation. And as I read it through. And glorify it too, I find the days are new, within my diary. 1929“It hasn’t been quite as cold today. We went with the horse this A.M. and this noon. I have my 100 drills on in Palmer Method writing and have started on diploma. M. and I walked home tonight. Teams are going across the bay and lake now…Got up early this A.M. as we had solid cession again today. I ate dinner over to Betty’s. We went up to the ski jump this P.M. it was Pine Hill. The highest jump was about 125 ft. Dad brought me up home in a new Ford. We have had about 6 inches of snow. M. went over to Eloa’s this P.M. We have just heard Lady Mary Heath talk on aviation on the radio…It has been a nice winter day. We have driven our new Ford about 100 miles. I like it awfully well. An army airplane landed down on the lake tonight. It had skis on. Betty came across the bay with me tonight. She didn’t go to school this A.M. as she had to

This is a VERY RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window into New York& American History! I'm always excited when I find an early diary from a small American town. As these pieces of history are so rare and precious! Richburg is a small village. 1911/1913 HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF CHARLES SHERIFF/WHITEWATER WIS./FULL!!
Up for auction is the diary of Mr. Charles Sheriff from Whitewater Wis.I see the years 1911 and 1912.But am not really sure what or how many years are covered, because he writes the day and the month, but not the year, usually, and will not write for a long time and then will pick up and write again. He has written it in an old autograph book of his that has a couple of signitures and poems from the late 1800's and he has written his diary all around them. There are only about three signitures on three pages and they also have lovely pencil drawings with them.He writes about his big family, working in his garden, the farm work that was done, the farm animals, the weather, sickness, friends and callers and much more! The diary or autograph book is in good condition considering its age.His handwriting is a bit of a challege at first, and takes some getting ... moreuse to,but the more I read the easier it got.Someone who has the time could do some research about this man and his family and find out the whole story. He seems like a very nice man,who was very family oriented.Any questions please feel free to email me and thank you so much for looking! RARE 1881 HANDWRITTEN CIVIL WAR VETS DIARY Minneapolis Minnesota History Floods
1881 HANDWRITTEN DIARY- It's so rare that I find diaries from Minnesota, especially one that was written by a Veteran of the Civil War. When I started to research this very rare diary. I was amazed at how much history was represented. WHAT A GREAT PIECE OF AMERICANA! The Minnesota Territorial Legislature founded Minneapolis in 1855. Minneapolis incorporated as a city in 1867, It's amazing to think that this diary was written there just fourteen years later! T his AMAZING INCREDIBLE 132 YEAR OLD handwritten antique diary/ journal/ manuscript book was written by a man who was named CONRAD E. TREADWELL. He was originally from the town of ELMIRA. CHEMUNG COUNTY, NEW YORK but in the 1850's he traveled west. first to Iowa. Then Missouri, then on to Minnesota. He was living in MINNEAPOLIS. MINNESOTA when he wrote this diary, and he was ... moreserving as a Judge! Conrad was born abt. 1833. So he was 48 years old when he wrote this diary. While researching him. I found his Civil War Draft Registration records, and I'll include a copy of this information to the winning bidder. Here is some interesting genealogy background I found while researching him: Conrad E. was born to Hezekiah& Julia Noble, and he had six siblings- Nobel S. Sophia, Charles H. Hezekiah D. Samuel B. and John N. Julia(Noble) Treadwell was the daughter of John Noble. Who traced his ancestry to Thomas Noble, who came from England and settled in America as early as 1653. After their marriage. Hezekiah Treadwell and his wife made their home in New Milford, Connecticut, until 1817, when they moved to Deposit. New York and continued to reside there until 1829. In March 1830. Hezekiah died in East Franklin, NY, and Julia passed away in 1833. The five sons were orphaned and taken and raised by relatives. including Conrad. The man who wrote this diary- he was a just a baby at the time. In 1855. Conrad's brother, John N. decided to seek his fortune in the west(like Conrad) and he went to St. Paul. Minnesota. In 1874- 187

At times she was discouraged because her pupils did so poorly, and took her teaching duties very seriously. Ella had a very active life, and in the summer, she took a vacation to Cape May. She wrote of many deaths and funerals, and mentioned scores of full names. Following are sample entries, some of which are excerpts from longer entries: Jan 3.Started from Harry's to school. 1853 Diary with Handwritten Obituary of Emma Boardman Waukegan ILL Spiritualist
Although this diary only has one entry that covers two pages. The provenance is so very interesting. It’s an 1853 black pocket diary and on March 12 th. 1855(the“3” in 1853 has been replaced by a“5” the following is written… Died Mrs. Emma A. Boardman the wife of Hon. William A. Boardman of Waukegan Ill. She was a devoted believer in the ministrations of angles and the communion of saints on the power of the departed spirits of those who have lived upon earth to and to assist and influence their brethren of earth to attain to an exalted philosophy and knowledge of the laws of life and a future refined state of endless progression. She was called to bear a most severe illness with a calm tranquility of mind seldom was equaled. She leaves four children to mourn and a devoted husband. Abides where everlasting spring and never withering flowers ... moredeath like a narrow seed divide this Heavenly land promises. Here’s the cool thing. She and her husband. William A. Boardman were supposed spiritualists in Waukegan. Illinois and the above quote seems to be a testament to that. He was a lawyer. Then a judge and also the village president in 1851. At one point he went to a church trial to represent a Miss Grace Davis who was accused by the Christian congregational church of using her spiritualistic powers and healing mediums to cure sick people and help them out with their suffering. She was thought by the church to be an unsavory woman, very much like the Salem witch trials. I got most of this information from a book called“Modern American Spiritualism” The book has an article about this very trial and begins by says… CHURCH TRIAL OF MISS GRACE DAVIS-WAUKEGAN INDEPENDENT DEMOCRAT. During the past year and a half. Scarcely a day has elapsed in which the citizens of Waukegan have not been cheered by the sight of a little airy female form, quietly gliding form the sick bed of one sufferer to that of another and under the professed guidance of“spirits” administering such aid as was within her power. The almost une

Also included is a receipt from Crawford's Store, which was on West State Street in Ithaca NY(he also wrote on the back of it) Entries are written by a W. R. McKinney- who might be W. Ray McKinney, whose 1908 diary was sold on eBay some years ago(I Googled it. If so, McKinney was born in June of 1871. Son of Jacob and Addie McKinney of Tompkins County, Dryden NY. Readability is probably a 7 out of 10. This much older McKinney writes of working on his car. Working on or in his studio, sketching(must have been an artist? and taking/doing class. Other characters include ... moreAlma, Gordon, and Isabel. Got a radio set and heard about Lindbergh's flight. 1931 Handwritten Travel Journal Diary - Cunard Lancastria and Scythia
The author of this travel diary did not write her name in the book. But she was from Yonkers, NY. On July 1st, she departed NYC on the Lancastria for a wonderful cruise through Europe and Scandanavia. A few years later, this ship was comandeered and used as a troopship by the British. On June 17, 1940 the ship was sunk by the enemy resulting in the deaths of over 4,000- more than that of the Titanic and Luistania combined) The countries she toured included Spain, Algiers, Italy, Monaco, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Belgium, Holland, France, England and Ireland. The extensive cruise lasted 2 full months. She returned September 1 on the Scythia. Both ships were from the Cunard Line. Of course the author wrote of the many spectacular sights she saw. But she also commented on the people she met or saw. Both on the ship ... moreand off. She was quite expressive and outspoken at times in her opinions: July 1.What an excitement and what a thrill when the boat actually got underway! The trip down the Hudson with the N.Y. skyline set out against a full moon.I could not sleep. Too tired nervously, and got up four or five times to look at the lovely path of moonlight on the water. July 3.Last night it rained and the water dashed through some of the port holes and in some instances drenched people who had not wakened. It looked like a wild night out over the water. The ship had pitched all day and rolled all night but I escaped being sick. July 8. Madeira) This morning when I wakened. Something seemed different. I looked out of my porthole and saw a great rock and row boats in the harbor. Soon the boys were just below begging for coins. The way the children are taught to beg is too pathetic. Everyhere we turned, we saw poverty and begging, and yet there were many nice houses. The difficulty seems to be that there is no middle class. July 11.Cadiz) The people do not impress me as favorably as those in Seville. There is so much drinking at tables on the sidewalk.

1944 Handwritten Diary Fairbanks Alaska Denali National Park Brundidge Holt
I would have never guessed that a diary. With only 30 days of handwritten days, would contain such interesting and mysterious entries as this one does. The diary originally belonged to Charles William Holt who during the time this diary was written was in Alaska. I believe he was in the Fairbanks area and some of the remote areas around Fairbanks. Including Nenana. The diary is from 1944, WWII era, and he didn’t seem to be there as a military man(although there are some entries about the war and it’s progress) but seemed to have more interest in visiting mines. I believe he buys a piece of property around the Denali National Park Area called Windy Creek. http:www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/unit16.htm BUT his biggest interest. One which consumes him, was a woman named Della. On the inside front cover of this diary, Charles writes… To know ... morewhat is right and not do it is to lack courage. The reason I say there is a mystery behind this diary is because Della is married(and not to Charles) and I couldn’t believe I actually found her on the web(Couldn’t seem to find Charles though) Della also has a little girl and Charles says that the little girl is his. The web however says the child belongs to her husband. Neil. They also have 2 other children. Della and her husband live in a remote cabin that Charles says is around Post 369. I will send along with this diary, the full names of Della and Neil. Charles still dates but says the woman he’s dating is a“gold digger” At one point he even sends a message through a radio station. A song dedication, to Della and she sends one back the next day. Finally Charles gets brave and in the last entry of the diary Charles writes that he sent Della a note by train saying he’ll be there the next day and if she doesn’t want to meet him to have a note at Post 369. What an entry too because he does go and ends of watching her cabin through binoculars. I would love to know the entire story. On a side note he also gets a letter from Argentina and says the news is very sad and
Antique Handwritten Diary 1944 Married Woman Knoxville TN Area
Hello! This is an antique handwritten diary from 1944. Nearly every day has an entry of some sort. Whether it be about her husband"Bill" going to church, visiting friends, going to movies, or having"two teeth uprooted" for $4.00. Sadly, her name is never mentioned, but she mentions the names of those around her and also the places that they went. Knoxville and Fountain City are mentioned quite a few times, as is Jefferson City. While she mentions"going to Knoxville" I believe that they lived somewhere in the county or in a surrounding county very close to it. Some of the people mentioned are a"Bernice" Martin" Goldie" Frank and Kate" Mr. Johnston" Lt. Mackey" Mrs. Henry" Mrs. Gamble" Mrs. Racker" and many more. I believe they may have rented out rooms of some ... moresort, as she mentions several of these people paying their rent up to certain dates, such as"Lt. Mackey payed room rent up to June 5. I also believe that this woman was perhaps sickly. As she rarely seems to go to town and do house work other than quilting and baking. She also has some doctor's names listed in the back, saying she got"ex-rays" and treatments with them. But, I do not think that she was very old, as she mentions visiting her mother several times. She was probably in her mid-20s up to maybe her 40s when she wrote this, but I really don't know. Here are a few excerpts: February 3. Wed. Goldie's birthday. Orsie and Bob dropped in. Rainy day. Finished paying for Bill's watch. Bill bought me two pair of stockings. May 8. Sat. Blanche spent the day with me. Bill and I went to Fountain City. I went to see"Lum& Abner" first show I had seen in more than two years. Bill and I spent night at( September 28. Tues. Washed several pieces, and cooked a good supper. That's my thinking. This is a great diary. Especially interesting if you have roots in Knoxville and its surrounding areas. The diary itself is in pretty good condition,

1869 Handwritten Diary 16yr old Edith Harpour Father Sea Captain Mother Invalid
I will be listing several things from my private collection in the next several days and post them as buy it now prices. Most of them I haven’t been able to research or read but believe me they are all very historical. This 1869 handwritten journal was written by 16 year old Edith(or Edeth) Harpour whose father was a sea captain and as the journal opens up they are on board the yacht“Astor” I only had time to read the first 20 or so pages and there are 184 pages of writing in this large journal. She is an amazing writer too and it’s almost as if she’s written the most important events in her life in novel form. In the beginning it says“These“just fruits” at a late day are affectionately dedicated to a good papa by his daughter. May 1869. After that you’ll find a page that lists chapters and those read… The Trial Trip. Chapter I Home Sweet ... moreHome. Chapter II Sunsets and Philosophy. Chapter III Twilight and Educational. Here is an example of the first couple of pages to give you an idea… How is her head Captain? On hearing a voice. A broad shouldered fine looking white haired gentleman stopped in his short walk, turned round and faced a young girl who not with an assumed air of gravity had asked the above question. The“Captain” advancing a step or two passed his hand quietly through the brown curls of his daughter and gazing into her dark eyes said“If I informed my Eddie that“her head” was N.W. by W. or N.E. by E. how much wiser would she be? But papa dear, how are we getting along? I don’t like this perfectly quiet gliding! I wis

1923 Scrapbook Diary w/ Handwritten Memories, photos, locks of hair, ephemera
This is an absolutely delightful 1923 Memory Book put together by Mamie Lowder who lived in Muskogee Ok. The first 34 pages of the book are handwritten by classmates on white 11" X 10" heavy paper- the same size as the rest of the black pages in the book. These are not your typical"Roses are red" type of entries. The classmates recounted specific events and incidents that happened during Mamie's school years. From what they wrote. Mamie was quite a high sprited young lady and enjoyed some good times. Several years after 1923, someone, probably Mamie, wrote in a light pencil on several pages what had become of that person. Some had married and had children- the name of the spouse was listed if known. A few were teachers, some had moved and sadly, one young man had been killed in an auto accident. Mamie was an intelligent ... moreand talented young woman. There are newspaper clippings in the book that were written about her- one for winning an essay contest. Another for being named the city's most industrious student of the year, and yet another about a contest in which she had moved up to second place. There are many labeled photographs in the scrapbook. They show Mamie to be an attractive girl. She also included photos of her father(a fireman) Mother, sister, relatives, classmates and friends and boyfriends. There are photos of people in all types of costumes, perhaps from Halloween or a costume party. Two pages have tiny bows afixed to the pages. I am not sure what they represent unless they were made from the clothing of the person whose name is written underneath(one has a hat size label attached) A few are tied with locks of hair. There is a lock of Miss Lowders hair when she was 5 years old. Other ephemera includes dance cards. Theater and other programs, newspaper clippings, pages of calling and business cards, necklace made of playing cards and much more. On the last couple of pages are some small objects- cigarettes, cigar and other labels, even a stick of gum- all labeled with a name

Hi!This great old scrapbook diary is of the life of Miss Iva Brooks from Albany New York.It starts in 1928.Goes through her graduating high school, going to college, and her engagement, with all the keepsakes, notecards, photos, letters, and momentos she could squeeze in it!The book is a home made two ring binder that she calls,On The Popcorn Farm in 1933"I dont know why that is written on it,but Im sure it had meaning to her.It measures about 9 1/2" x 7"and as you can see by the photos, the book itself is in pretty rough condition, and fragile. There are tears in it,and the pages are coming away from the rings, etc.but for the most part the momentos are in tact. There is a flower inside, that is coming apart and a couple of pins and paperclips that are rusting.Even with that said it is still a sweet little book and a look back into one ... morewomans life in a much simpler time.So much has changed and yet stays the same.Any questions please feel free to email me and thank you so much for looking! 1890 Handwritten Trip Diary England Meets President Lincoln's Son Robert Todd US
I wish the author of this diary had written his name but there are several clues for further research. He seems to be quite the prominent American citizen and has gone to England on business. I say he’s prominent because he attends some very important social events and runs with an elite crowd. His business has to do with property and plantations in the country of Mexico and also some in the state of Florida. Among others. This is an 1890 handwritten travel diary that begins with our author and his wife Bess(Betsy) landing in Liverpool from the steamer“City of Paris” on January 1 st. Immediately they call on Robert Lincoln who is the US Minister to Great Britain and better known as the first son to President Lincoln. The same time he also calls on John C. New who is the US Consul General. http:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C.New The diary goes ... moreon with an entry for everyday(except 10) until they start for home on board the steamer“Lahn” on July 24 th. There are a few shipboard entries going home. Some of the companies he mentions are Tepis. Coloma Coffee Plantation, property in Tamaulipas, India Rubber Company, Canara and Escuadron Coffee Plantations, and more. He also talks about his boyhood days being in Paris in a place called“Rue des Postes” where he lived with his brother. Another small clue is that he says he“Has secured the name“Silas” for his cable address. And last but not least he attends an event of great importance happened on May 31 st(see quote below) It’s a banquet he attended called the“American Testimonial Banquet” and it was held in honor of the great explorer Henry Morton Stanley. He says he even got Stanley’s autograph while there; http:www.christies.com/lotfinder/LotDetailsPrintable.aspx?intObjectID=3975998 As you can see this diary really deserves further research and of course there are his entries of which I’ve give you a few examples as follows… 1890“January 1 st, Happy New Year to us all. During the past night. The good steamer, City of Paris” reached Liverpool and

This is a diary written by an unknown wealthy woman from Youngstown. Oh. On the trip to Italy, she is accompanied by a young girl, Emily, and also someone she calls M.E. From reading the diary. It appears that the author had two children, Imogene and William. Imogene attended Mt Holyoke, and William attended Dartmouth. On her return from Europe, she visited both children for a few days at their schools. The diary begins on Jan 1, 1914 and the first week the entries are about the author's preparations to leave on her trip. 5 Handwritten Diary Moulton Cotton Family Randolph VT Washington DC Mrs Lincoln
I want to start off by saying that on a weekly basis I get questions from bidders asking if I split up family lots of diaries and sell them separately. So I thought I’d post something to ease everyone’s mind before they buy. I am very passionate about diary collecting and history and I can’t even imagine buying a diary lot from one particular family(such as this one from the Moulton family) and then splitting them up and selling each separately. Its heart wrenching when I see this happening and you have my promise that if I have more then one diary. No matter how many I have, I will always sell family lots together in one auction. But I think it’s a good question you should always ask your sellers just in case you want to try and keep a lot together. And with that said… There are some diaries that could actually change and/or add to the course ... moreof history and I feel these diaries possess that kind of information. This is a very historical group of diaries that belonged to the Moulton family originally from Randolph and Brookfield Vermont. There are 5 handwritten diaries written by different members of the family and they date between 1855-1872. Also included in this diary lot is a handwritten manuscript that I found between the pages of one of the diaries. This manuscript has a handwritten genealogy representing the Moulton/Cotton families. The head of this family was Phineas Moulton and he was married to Maria Cotton. Phineas was the son of Phineas Moulton Sr. and Maria’s father was Bybe Lake Cotton and both were soldiers in the Connecticut Line during the Revolutionary War. Phineas Sr. was a pioneer of the town of Randolph Vermont. Arriving in 1788 from Monson Massachusetts and settling in 1793 about one mile east from the village on what is known as the“Green Mountain Stock Farm” which has since remained in the possession of the family. Phineas Jr. became influential in public affairs, serving in both houses of the state legislature. There is also a cemetery named after the family called Moulton Cemetery a
WWII Soldier's Personal War Diary Handwritten
The whole book is sort of bent down the middle as though it was carried in someone's back pocket for a long time. The cover said My Days in the Service. But. The words are almost worn away. The front endpapers show Army Insignnia and the back endpapers show Navy Insignia A pasted in scrap of paper gives all the important information of the original owner. It is the personal diary of R. Mast. Med. Det. 148th Inf. APO 32. Dec. 18, 1944. Upon release it was to be mailed to Mr. R.C. Mast 1216 Broadway St. Superior, Wis. Two pages are torn from the book. The book is not filled in. By any means, but it is filled in A LOT with such poignant information. On the page that was designated for Citations, Awards and Decorations, the soldier instead listed all his favorite songs. Tucked in the pages, probably used as a bookmark, is the Soldiers American ... moreBowling Congress membership card. There are also some scraps with names and addresses tucked in other pages. I can give you a sampling of the writings. The first entry says: April 2. 1942. Today, Dick Ard life. 5 years of sorrow. rived. Charley and Gongy left for a 30 day furlough after passing the test for fly cadets. These four I'm really going to miss. Dick also left a dollar under my blanket saying, Buy a drink on me Gus. Sure hope they make out good. The final entry in the diary is on a page marked MY DISCHARGE FROM THE SERVICE. It says: August 15. 1945, Fort Sheridan S/Sgt. 5 years of wasted life. 5 years of sorrow. 5 years of looking forward to the future. 5 yrs. of Experience. 5 years of nothing. 5 years gone. Autographs from buddies. Places he'd been, Birthdays and important days to remember, Descriptions of some dates he was on.one apparently very special. It is probably only about 25% written in. But it tells of the soul of a lonely soldier that was probably repeated in hundreds of like-minded hearts. Our Promise: Accurate Description. 1931-40 Handwritten Diary Harry Jaques Lynn MA Historical Society Road Trips
Up for auction today is a 150 page handwritten diary that originally belonged to Harry A. Jaques. I found Harry on the Lynn Massachusetts genealogy sites so I’m assuming this is the same man. Says he was born in 1862 and married Junie or Jennie who has been his wife for 49 years when this diary was written. I get the feeling he might have something to do with the Historical Society too because in the front of the journal you’ll find several pages devoted to work he’s done and at the top of the pages it says either“Historical House” or“Lynn Historical” He also talks about the Historical Society within his diary entries. So this would most definitely be a great diary for anyone having interest in or living in the Lynn Massachusetts area. The first entry starts on November 1 st. 1931 and the last one May 30 th. 1940. He doesn’t write every single ... moreday but does write for 150 pages which give the reader a lot of information. He’s a“road trip” kind of a guy too because so many of his entries have to do with trips taken in an auto. I’ve taken several of his entries to give you a better idea of the contents… 1931“November 1 st, Rupert and Helen came and took us to Ride to Peterborough and Keene then home by the way of Manchester. Left home about 11 A.M. Come home at 9:45. We ate lunch by the side of the road… November 29 th, Rupert and Helen were here to help us eat our turkey after Thanksgiving dinner they took us to ride on the turnpike to Dummer Mill then to Byfield and to West Newburg through Ash Swamp and to the place where Grandfather Jaques. Giles M. Jaque was born. Then to the main road to Greenland and Georgetown. Topsfield and home… 1932“February 18 th. Benjamine N. Johnson died at his home on Nahant St. After a short illness of heart trouble. He was the President of the Historical Society at the time of his death… March 28 th, General alarm of fire on Broad St. at the Atlantic Wrecking Co. 4 men were hurt and were take to hospital… May 31 st, Bessie Richardson and mother and father took us
1945 WWII Handwritten Autograph Album Diary Camp Stoneman Biak Yontan Airfield
Up for auction today is a handwritten autograph album belonging to a soldier who was in the army during WWII and it looks like he was the baker in the outfit; or at least all of his buddies who signed the book refer to him as that. They also call him“Stubby” I tried to see if they were all part of the same company but didn’t have the time to research it thoroughly. In the back of the album there is a three page diary entry which gives you a good idea of where he was and when. And I quote… MY DIARY My Voyage Overseas. I left Camp Stoneman at San Francisco Cal. August 27 th. 44. I passed by Guadalcanal and arrived in New Guinea 9/11/44. Arrived in Biak Netherlands East Indies 9/25/44. We were on the front lines there then. They hadn’t invaded the Philippines yet. Our first big air raid hit us March 22 nd. 1945. There was nine of my buddies ... morekilled then, blew everywhere, it missed me by about 50 ft. Daisy Cutter, the name of the bombs. We had 27 air raids there. We loaded on L.S.T. June 18 th. And left for the Philippines June 22 nd. We went to Leyte and it took 5 days to get there. We stayed two days. Then we started for Okinawa. It took us 4 days. We started unloading at Naha 4 th of July. The 5 th of July we moved to Yontan Airstrip(at least I think it says Airstrip) about 25 northwest. Our first night there and the air raids started. This is August 4 th. We have had 33 air raids here. We bet among the fella’s who guessed the closest time they come over. The nips… His entries suddenly stop there. I found out some very interesting information on Yontan Airfield… Yontan(Yomitan) Airfield was originally established by Imperial Japanese Army in 1944 as Kita Airfield( 北飛行場, Kita Hikōjō? During the Battle of Okinawa on April 1. 1945, United States Marine Corps and United States Army forces seized the airfield on the first day of the landing. It was quickly repaired and became the first airfield on Okinawa to be used by the American forces. Later. It was developed into a major American base for A

The almanac is not actually very rare but its what is contained within the pages make it unique. Contained in the pages of the almanac are 6 sheets of paper that are sewn into the binding. They are a record and diary. That begin on Feb 1821 and continue until Dec 1821. Written in miniature script on both sides of the sheets are everyday observations of a farmer. All though brief. They include lots of descriptions of weather(one or two lines sometimes a sentence long) Other observations are more note worthy. And reveal what life was like at the time. What I find interesting is the number of individuals that were preaching? I am not sure what denomination he belonged to.It is intriguing ... morethat so many individuals would be preaching in one area. Also of note is that the author states that the regiment met at Hampton? Here are some examples of what's written on the sheets: Highway tax for 1821. Abbot Preached Turner Preached Library meeting Long Preached Regiment met at Hampton? Load of corn husking Grant Preached W Sawyer Preached the sacrament Killed Chickens Killed a lamb Baily Preached Milton Preached Snow Storm one gallon Rum Killed bull Feb 14th pleasant lecture Abbot preached Began haying at Greys meadows
1537 Italian MANUSCRIPT Diary TUSCANY Handwritten ITALY Lucca TUSCAN History OLD
A GREAT INSIGHT INTO THE EARLY 1500S IN THE TUSCAN CITY OF LUCCA. ITALY. BEING A HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT. DATED 1537. WRITTEN BY A PROMINENT LAWYER/NOTARY OF THE TIMES AND FILLED WITH FASCINATING EVENTS. NAMES AND MORE! A fantastic Italian manuscript of notable provenance and authorship. This is a 16th-17th century notebook owned and written by Jerome Palma. A prominent lawyer and Notary of the city of Lucca. Through its interesting and chronological annotations, one gains a historic insight into life in Tuscany in the 1500-1600s. Includes content such as acquisitions of houses, lands and mills by the three brothers Palma Cherub, Baptist and Michelangelo, or the marriage of Nicholas Carelli and Lucina daughter of Michelangelo da Parma, citizens of Lucca, etc. The journey continues between"grant contracts" donations, registration ... moreof promises and payments until the purchase of the'Osteria del Corno, outside the walls of Lucca. A great joy to read, and a true gem for lovers of Tuscan Renaissance and for historians, as this truly paints a chance to view the real life and events of the 1500-1600s through the eyes of a Notary of the times! The book provides facts and records with dates beginning in 1537 all the way to 1677. Which obviously makes for a period too long for the life of one man. You can see, and it's beautiful, that's handwriting of Jerome Palma changes with advancing age, and it stops at 1545. The annotations resume then, in 1602, with a new calligraphy, less clear and more hasty than that of Palma. We are not sure who this person was, sadly. The book references events that took place in the district of Lucca. Camaiore, Segromigno and Marlia. Leather cover with loss of leather. C1700s. Hinges and binding intact, however. Text in Italian vernacular. 88pp total, w/ 76pp written upon. Measures 8" x 6" Good luck! On Feb-06-13 at 14:10:28 PST. CIRCA 1883 HANDWRITTEN DIARY EDGEWOOD TEXAS VERY REVEALING HAIR KEEPSAKES EXTRA
Up for auction is a quite revealing diary from a young woman from Edgewood Texas circa 1883. There are approx 80 handwritten pages. Half her own thoughts and the other half poetry, but she was quite frank writing down her feelings, it seems that the purpose of the diary at first. Was to write her thoughts about a man whom she was in love with. For example she wrote in the front of diary" My new journal Dedicated to one I love. Not that I fancy it will contain anything worthy of the beloved with whom I seek to associate it" She documents her life but in such a way that I find quite amazing and personal. This is not the typical diary with entries about the weather and visiting Relatives. She writes about her wedding night. Birth of children, and description of them but not always in a consistent, all though what she writes is actually ... moreamazing, Than she talk about her children this is all written down in the years 1883- 1896. At times she seems desperate and quite dramatic almost obsessed perhaps. She even wrote three pages of Instructions for her funeral on the last few pages of the diary. Included are a page with hair keepsakes one of her mother and the others I believe maybe her children. Another page is a kind of scrapbook of pressed plants& flowers. I will add some of the dramatic excerpts. I am not sure it seems from her writing, she may have had a affair before she was married? Honest confession is good for the soul I have made my confession and I hope for some body elses soul" Yesterday was a day of unmitigated misery- all heavens I was foolish. Enough to let my imagination break, all bonds with practically away with my reason. Today I have been almost desperate I have wondered if life with out adventure is life worth living Adventure! What do I mean by adventure I cannot answer my own question. Was I made to be misunderstood If I wasn't than what use am I made for? If I could hope my life was or is to be the Fulfillment of prophecy to another life! Oh Heaven! I have been foolish enoug

She wants for women to be able to sleep around and not to have to worry about morals or ethics. She talks about her family and friends too.I have to mention that while reading this she cracked me up because she uses the word, piss" sometimes, and it is just funny the way she uses it.For instance she said one time,What a piss today we got the permission to wear pants to school-amazing for our school district. She uses the word several times and also does more cursing. To give you a better idea of the contents of this diary here are a few examples of her entries. 1914 HANDWRITTEN SOLDIER DIARY OF ANTWERP WW1 WALMER-GRONINGEN 1ST NAVAL BRIGADE
This is a small pocket notebook. And a simple account of The Siege of Antwerp. The soldier's name in Smith and he is among 12 men and 1 Officer that became separated from their battalion. Some exerts: It was an awful sight to see the big shells bursting all around us. We were not to reach the trenches so easy as we could not get to them for the heavy shrapnel bombardment that was going on" Our Officer took the glasses to look and while he was doing so he saw the German's flag hoisted and a lot of Russian helmets moving about. He came to the conclusion that our brigade had retreated and was time we did the same. Similar events for another soldier can be seen here: It is likely that Smith was interned in Groningen in Holland. But there is no further account after his arrival there: http:www.wereldoorlog1418.nl/englishcamp/
150pc Handwritten Letters Diary Archive Beal Potter Bath Bowdoinham ME 1896-1951
This group is just too large for me to read and study right now so I’m selling it un-researched. All of the items belonged to the Beal and Potter family of Maine. Most are written to Rachel Beal Potter who was the daughter of Reverend Zacheus M. Beal. There are 120 letters. 2 handwritten journals and about 20-30 other pieces of ephemera. All of them date between 1896-1951. Most of the letters date from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. A few are from her father too. Some of the writers of the letters are: H. H. Lefferts(who has a business or ministry called“Signs of the Times) R. Lester Dodson, Martin D. Fisher, D. M. Vail, Minnie Waddell, J. I. Foster of Rising Star Texas, Arnold H. Bellows, Marion S. Brooks of Chico California, Elder O. J. Crocker of Hiram Georgia and more. Dodson and Lefferts ended being authors writing several books about“Signs ... moreof the Times” and other religious pieces. Most of the letters are long several page letters too and most have their original envelopes. As far as the two journals; both seem to have to do with genealogy. One is a 50 page journal and the title page reads“ Bath Maine. Dec. 2. 1895. Letters, preaching and thoughts of Father’s. Eld. Zacheus M. Beal. And then in the back of that journal is another section with the title. Sketches of Sister Attie’s letter to Father. The 2 nd journal has 62 pages and all those pages have to do with birth. Marriage and death dates. When they moved to each house, dates of special events, etc. Some great family history. Then as far as the ephemera goes there are a few“Times of the Signs” newsletters or newspapers. Then there are 18 handwritten(several pages) of manuscripts that are titled. Maine Old School Baptist Circular Letters. Bowdoinham Maine. I actually found this church on the web and scanned a photo of it. These manuscripts date from the early 1900’s and then skip to the 1940’s. Really a wonderful family group that deserves further research.
1905 Handwritten Diary Sails to Berlin to Study Piano at Stern Conservatory
I know this 1905 diary has so much more to it then what I’m going to be able to share here because I haven’t fully read or researched it. The diary doesn’t have a full name but the initials F. M.B. are written on the inside cover of the diary. She also mentions an uncle by the name of Buettner so that could possibly be her last name. Further research needs to be done. The diary starts off with our author and her friend Gertrude in the states heading to St. Louis through Burlington on board the train. They are heading to New York to catch the ocean liner Kronprinz Wilhelm which takes them to Berlin Germany. The reason our author is heading to Europe is because she is attending The Stern Conservatory in Berlin under the tutorship of Professor Gustav Hollaender. I believe she plays the piano. The Stern conservatory has an incredible history ... morebehind it and I quote… It was a private school in Berlin with many notable tutors and alumni. It was originally founded in 1850 at the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern. Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. It was originally founded in 1850 as the Berliner Musikschule by Julius Stern, Theodor Kullak and Adolf Bernhard Marx. Kullak withdrew from the conservatory in 1855 in order to create a new academy of sculpture and three-dimensional art. With Marx's withdrawal in 1856, the conservatory came exclusively under the Stern family and adopted its name. In 1894 it was taken over by Gustav Hollaender(the uncle of film composer Friedrich Hollaender) who moved the school's location to the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall on Bernburger Strasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the course of the Gleichschaltung process. The Stern Academy in 1936 was renamed Konservatorium der Reichshauptstadt Berlin controlled by the Nazi regime. Gustav Hollaender's heirs were diseased. But for a few years they were able to run a"Jewish Private Music School Hollaender" until they were deported and murdered in 1941. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the school was again renam

Father, grandparents, and younger sister Ava in Salem Ohio. She also was very close to her Aunt Ava who was close to Ada in age and more like a sister than an aunt. Ada also had a brother Norman who was 2 years older and did not live in Salem. I often read in diary descriptions that ... morethe diary being described as a look into the lifestyle of that era. These diaries truly fit that description. The author's mode of travel was bicycle. And she took care of it the way we now maintain our autos. She wrote of using the telephone on rare occasions at other people's homes, paying.25 to see a demonstration of a moving picture, wagon and buggy accidents, typhoid and other illnesses, quack type medicines. The author attends a concert by Sousa's Band, hears lectures given by the WTCU as well as the Anti-Saloon League. Miss Webb was intelligent. And very interested in current events which she noted in her diaries. I was surprised to read that she even discussed politics with some of the male members of her family during the McKinley election. She wrote often about the McKinley/Bryan race. The following are excerpts from longer entries: June 18.The whistles blew about fifteen minutes of six announcing the nomination of McKinley. They blew for about an hour. The Convention was held at St Louis. July 13.I sent my list of words on William McKinley to the Pittsburg Times and a quarter for the paper a month. I had 195 words made out of the letters of William McKin

Written down circa 1850-52 by a soldier named O. W. Gilman. Also contains a diary from 1855 written by 18-19 year old Hattie Gilman. The book is from the Gilman family, Buffalo, New York. Judging by the officers mentioned in the journal and the places where he marched and camped. Gilman served with the 10th Infantry. The book begins with a few poems by Harriet(Hattie" L. Gilman of Buffalo(her relation to O.W. unknown) and then records O.W. Gilman's ... moreexperiences beginning on May 8, 1847, when he sailed from Fort Hamilton, NY bound for Texas and Mexico. The journal section totals 20 handwritten pages. After that, Gilman has written"Journal lost, Song book commenced Nov. 15th, 1852. This is followed by handwritten lyrics to songs, each with O.W. Gilman's name below and dated 1852, followed by poems and then a daily diary during 1855 written by Hattie, who notes that she turned 19 on August 10. Since Gilman has written"Journal lost" after the 20th page, he most likely wrote his account into this book from his original journal within the few years after his return from the war. Preliminary research found no known publication. Gilman records the difficult conditions under which the troops marched and camped. The burning sands, scorching sun and lack of water. He gives numerous details of the places they march to in Mexico, incidents including a few men who are killed by unknown assassins or drown in the Rio Grande, the death of General Hopping, and in November the visit of General Zachary Taylor and his retinue to Gilman's camp(at the School of Instruction in Mier) 7.5 x 6.5" Very readable. 1880 Handwritten Diary Rosa Sanborn Holderness NH 12yr old Girl Makes Gloves
This is another charming little diary written by a young 12 year old school girl who makes gloves. The diary is from 1880 and it originally belonged to Rosa R. Sanborn of Holderness New Hampshire. In the back of the book she writes… Steal not this book for if you do Rosa Sanborn will be after you. Rosa was born in 1868 and the daughter of Luther B. Sanborn and Laura J. Smith Sanborn. She married Frank P. Pearson July 25 th. 1898. I just skimmed through the diary as her entries are rather simple but still a great piece for anyone living in or having interest in this part of New Hampshire. I did notice that the entire family seems to contract the measles and that her Grandfather Smith dies. I’ve taken a few entries to give you a better idea of the contents… 1880“Henry Clark and Bill C. was here. Our folks broke roads. 4 went to meeting. Ned ... morewent a cavorting…Had lots of callers. Father fenced. Went over to Brown’s part of us. I made a few gloves…We went to school. Grandpa Smith is sick. Father and mother went to see him…Grandpa Smith died today at 7 o’clock P.M. August 28 th)We all went to Grandpa Smith’s funeral but Cora. Nona and Julie. We had a lot of company. Ned come home. 1908 Handwritten Travel Diary Journal - Trip to Native Scotland - SS California
Although the diary portion of this book is dated 1907. I believe this trip to Scotland was made in 1908. The owner crossed off the days and put in the day of the week that would correspond to 1908. The author's name is not in the book. She left on June 18. 1908 from St Louis and makes her way via train and ferry to NYC, arriving on June 20: June 20.Arose at 6:30. Wrote two postcards, attended prayers at 7:30 in the parlor of the boarding house. Had breakfast at 8:00- started out at 9:30, arriving at the pier at 10:00, went on board the"California" at 11:30, sailed from New York at noon. Saw the"Lusitania" in the harbor. Had dinner at 1:30, after dinner wrote a letter to Mary and sent a postcard of the steamer to Harry. It was a lovely afternoon, stayed on deck til 5 o'clock, had tea at 5:30, went on deck and stayed ... moreuntil 8:30, retired at 10 o'clock. The author had a very enjoyable crossing. And wrote daily. On July 28, upon arrival on the Irish Coast, she once again mentioned the"Lusitania" July 28.then we passed Dunbarton. Saw the castle. The scenery was beautiful. We saw where the"Lusitania" was launched from, and the Singer Sewing Machine Factory. We arrived in Glascow at 11:30, quite a few passengers got off that night. Retired at 12 o'clock. She proceeded to Dollar. Scotland, which was her final destination. The author knew her way around the country and had no problem finding her way around. She was eventually met in Dollar by her mother. Father and other relatives. The writer spent the next 6 weeks visiting her old friends and relatives, sightseeing, and having a good time in her native Scotland. She traveled by bicycle to other towns and sights. And usually recorded the number of miles she rode. The sights she visited included many castles, one of which was the famous Castle Campbell- it was quite a hike to the entrance. She traveled to Edinburgh and went sightseeing and shopping there as well. The diary was written in the diary portion of a hard cov

Antique Handwritten Diary of Civil War Colonel - Coded Masonic Memory Jogger
I'm going to start out by saying this is a lengthy item to describe and do it justice so please bear with me. I believe this handwritten diary to be a very rare find. It was originally owned by a Civil War Colonel named Colonel John B Yates. It is written in a coded language and I have done a lot of research to determine what exactly this is. With the help of several professors we have determined it is a Masonic Memory Jogger. The Masons used many rituals and were expected to memorize them without having them written down where just anyone could see. By using the book"Illustrations of Masonry" by William Morgan 1827 I have been able to decipher bits and pieces of what this says. There is still a lot to be deciphered which I will leave to the curious mind who owns this gem after me. Colonel Yates served in Company A. Michigan ... moreEngineers and Mechanics. That regiment worked repairing bridges and railroads, building blockhouses and fortifications, having skirmishes with the enemy and taking part in the engagements of Bowling Green, Perryville, Stones River and on the march with Sherman's army, 1861-1865. Colonel Yates was from Albion, Michigan. One of his business cards was tucked in a pocket of the diary and there is a photo of this. Also tucked in a pocket was an invitation to a"Washington Ball" at the Union House, in Delhi Friday evening, Feb. 20, 1863 at 4 o'clock. I have a copy of Col. Yates death notice stating his birth date of Oct. 18, 1833, and his record of service during the Civil War. This was written by William T Sherman himself. A quote reads"Its journal of operation during the campaign in Georgia and the Carolinas would illustrate the absolute limit of man for physical labor. I have sometimes reproached myself for cruelty in imposing or allowing to be imposed, on it such hard and constant labor, and now desire to indorse the paper with an emphasis that will show that I was conscious of the fact. I will be much pleased if Col. Yates can be suitably rewarded for his pa

1851 Handwritten Diary Caleb B. Rogers Norwich CT Sailing on Ship Constantine
Wish I had time to give you a full detailed description of this diary but I’m in the process of downsizing my private collection as I don’t have the kind of time to spend on them that they deserve. I’ve had this diary for almost 15 years now and I read it a long time ago but can’t quite remember all the details. However. I kept it because of the amazing qualities it has. First off it was written in 1851 by Caleb B. Rogers. It’s all about his journey on board the ship Constantine with R. L. Bunting as the ship’s captain. Caleb was sailing with his wife and they were both from Norwich Connecticut heading to Europe. He owned a machine company in Norwich and I found several inventions of his on the web. Plus in a history book on Norwich I found out that Caleb. Along with several other prominent men, formed The Municipal Gas Light Plant in 1853. ... moreThere are 123 handwritten pages and 8 of those pages have wonderful drawings on them(see scans above. There are also 10 pages with shipboard entries in the beginning starting with them leaving the docks in New York Harbor on May 8 th. 1851. He even lists the names of the 21 cabin passengers that are on board the ship. One is a Dr. Watkins who was a widower and 54 years old. However the Dr. just married a young woman who is 19 years old! He has a daughter who is 23. How interesting is that. And as you can imagine. A steamship in 1851 is quite different then the“modern” ocean liners of the turn of the century. I’ve scanned as many pages as I can to give you an idea of the contents but believe me you won’t be disappointed. This diary has so many wonderful qualities with its provenance being one of them. It measures about 4” x 6 ¼” and has a beautiful burnt orange colored hard cover. The cover is a bit worn but the binding and pages look good.

1869/1870/1871 Handwritten Diaries Diary - Fred Felch, N Sutton, NH and Boston
Frederick A Felch lived on a farm in No Sutton NH. He was 18 years old in 1869. And had a sister Mary Addie, age 23, and brothers John, age 22, Mark age 16. Fred and all the brothers worked very hard on the farm, along with their father, Gideon and mother, Malvina. In the winter months, they cut timber and took loads of wood to the mill. In the spring, they gathered sap. Of the three diaries. The earliest(1869) is the neatest and most complete, young Fred having skipped only 4 days of the year. He was quite smitten with a young lady named Ella, and wrote quite often about her: Feb 18.Our school finished today. Six men in the afternoon answered questions. Elder Cimbal was there. We got home at 5 oclock. Good evening. Ella I am glad to see you but I can't so too bad. Feb 26.I choped limbs upon his farm. Stormy. I choped until I got sick ... moreof it and put for home. I heard from Ella last nite. She is a lovely gal. June 4.I think of the lovesick they say I am. Ella Fisher wants to go a fishing some. Fred seemed to be sowing some wild oats and didn't get along with someone he called"Old Mean" and a few other names. Possibly his mother: Feb 9.They had a tip top good sing this evening. I was about sick but that was all rite. A lot there. Oh how sorry I am for something that I done but I never shall again at school. Feb 11.I didn't go down to Meeting this evening. They had a real good one. I was mad and no one cared for that but me. Mar 2.I schoped and choped. We had a first rate sing this evening. The Old Mean said that I got home at 2 oclock. I new better. 12 oclock. Mar 9.We all went to town meeting. I staid round there til half past 2. Then I went down you now where to Ella Fisher and came up to the N( and got some snuff and got drunk and got home half past 10 safe. Apr 4.Deacon Nichols was buried today. I went to meeting all day. Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider, Victorian Life
Antique 1907 Handwritten Diary: Ithaca NY Young Lady Ella Rider. Victorian Life Description. Offered here is the 1907 diary of a young lady from Ithaca. N.Y. I haven't read the whole diary. But did peek in enough to get the gist of her story. The author wrote a half to a full-page daily. Her handwriting very easy to read. At this point. We believe she was Ella Rider. I have 14 more of what may be this woman's diaries up through 1961. Only the 1907 diary is being auctioned here, but if you're interested in the lot, let me know and I can place the rest of them on eBay as a bulk buy. I also have 16 other vintage diaries that apparenlty belonged to Ella's sister Hazel Rider Daly. I will be offering these singly or as a lot soon. Let me know if you have a preference on how they're sold. Hazel was originally from Ithaca but ... morelater moved to Cortland. Hazel's diaries run from 1913 thru 1959. At this point I'm confused over who wrote some of the diaries in these two lots. We know which 16 are definitely Hazel's because she signed them. The others are unsigned and could be either sister. Though there are two 1913s and two 1932s. indicating at least two writers for those years. But back to what we're going to call Ella's 1907 diary. While in Ithaca she worked in a store. And probably lived with her parents. She had a large circle of girlfriends. And male friends appear fairly regularly to walk her home. A particular fellow"stayed until nearly one. Then he said he wouldn't go until I had kissed him goodnight. So I did(not) Ella is active in several churches. Their choirs and youth groups, and she and her girlfriends attend several times per week. She especially enjoys having girlfriends spend the night. Or spending nights at their homes, and writes of being very disappointed when they don't always accept her invitations. She sews. Including working on a long kimono, and occasionally goes to a sewing bee. She notes riding her bicycle a few times, listening to the Graphaphone
