Antique Leather Bound Scripture Geography Book Rare Antique Leather Bound Book Scripture Geography 1834 Fine Binding This auction is for an Antique Leather Bound Book from 1834 Titled"Scripture Geography" The full title reads"Scripture Geography Or A Companion To The Bible: Being A Geographical And Historical Account Of The Places Mentioned In The Holy Scriptures. It was written by Thomas T. Smiley. A.M. M.D. It was published in Philadelphia by Thomas K. Greenbank. The date on the title page is 1834 and on the reverse is 1831. It is beautifully bound in soft brown tooled leather. It has raised hubs and a gold stamped title on the spine. It has very nice hand made end papers as shown. It has 3 hand colored fold out maps. It is also"embellished with nearly one hundred engravings, illustrative of heathen deities, of nations ... moreand countries mentioned in Scripture, and of the subsequent history and present state of those countries. The first 12 pages are advertisements from the publisher for"Cheap and Valuable Publications. One of the ads is for this book and I have included some pictures of the ad. The book is 288 pages + 12 pages of ads = 300 pages. The pages show some foxing throughout as shown. The binding is tight. This book was purchased from a rare book dealer about 35 years ago. The book measures 7 3/4" by 5" and is about 1 1/8" thick. This is a handsome volume in a fine binding of a 179 year old book. This would be a nice addition to your library. Early Antique 18th Century Dated 1788- German Bible with Coin Silver Latches& Leather Binding The antique German bible from the 18th century is dated 1788 on one of the interior front pages.The hand painted interior page has a decorative floral pattern and old German text with a 1788 date within a border of vibrant red and rich green tempera pigment. The early bible has hand-made coin silver corners. Engraved hinges and decorative coin silver latches that are hallmarked on the inside"12" indicating German coin silver) along with“IPS” EV” and“B” There is a hand written note in German script affixed to the first page. The decorative early handmade endpapers have an unusual iridescent metallic copper floral pattern. The leather bound covers of the book have scratching and scuffing, and some of the leather is missing from the spine ... morebinding- typical and to be expected with a book of this age. The silver hinges and edges are tarnished, and the latches still operate properly. The inside of the book is in good condition, with a few spots of mold and yellowing of pages. This Latin Holy Bible contains only the New Testa ment. As issued. Bible is profusely illustrated with 96 metal cuts by Jacob Faber(also known as Jacques Lefèvre) A block-cutter active in Basel and Lyon circa 1516-1550. Faber got his start working for the great humanist printer Froben in Basel, earned his reputation adapting the work of Hans Holbein for book ... moreillustration, and eventually established himself as an independent supplier of printing blocks, trading in his own work as well as that of other artists. Faber's initials IF appear in some of the cuts. There are also some illuminated initials and head and tail pieces. This set of cuts was first used by Sebastian Gryphius(1492-1556) in his 1542 New Testament; he reprinted this edition at least six times before his death. His heirs brought out an edition in 1564. And his son Antoine published this edition five years later. 2 parts bound as one( Title Page. Contexts, Heronimys in Catalogo, Gospels 4-394, Acts of the Apostles 395-456, Epistles 1-278, Apocalypse/Book of Revelation 279-343, Index(unnumbered) Pages are quite clean and all are bound tight. T he H oly Bible. Containing the Old and New Testaments, etc. Philadelphia: William W Harding. 1863. Fully adorned gilt designed Full-Leather embossed covers. Well rubbed leather but most of the gilt still shining, although the sedges show some exposure, and boards are detached cleanly. A few pages loosened in front, but otherwise all pages attached. Working brass clasp as shown, great details. Spine cover is in pieces, detached completely, and found within the book, as shown. Many illustrations both in text and plates, with dual frontispieces and engraved title pages in color. Interior lightly used, some wear towards front and back, also some very minor instances of soiling, edge stains and browning. Family records(beautifully designed in illuminated gilt and color) are as shown from the Wetzel family of Franklin County, PA, including a ... moresingle photo, as shown. This is the first German-American Bible printed outside of Philadelphia, and the first Bible printed in Reading. A significant edition, both in size and scope, this marked the spread of German printers and the more local production of bibles in the Pennsylvania-Dutch back country. A solid copy, bound in original leather binding over thick and heavy boards, in decent shape, both original clasps are gone, moderate wear to edges of leather, arear board nearly detached with only a cord holding it on. Large raised bands to spine, some wear to spine with light loss, but label visible. Unique antique PA German design. The fragments are the very best sections from scrolls that are not able to be repaired due to too many damaged sections. While the scroll is no longer repairable, these fragments are still in wonderful condition because they are the best sections of the scroll. All badly damaged sections are properly taken care of by the scribe. While they have not been carbon dated. You can rest assured that these fragments are authentic. The scribe indicated to me that the scroll came from Germany and that it more than likely was written in Germany as well. It came to Israel in the past 40 years with emigrants. It is in a nice condition and is all original-the oak has the original finish and the iron has the original black paint. The stand is on rollers and it is sturdy. We have used it to hold two Bibles-one on each side. You can also use it to cradle an open Bible. Complete exceot for 6 leaves(lacking 69/70, 71/72, 46/47, 83/84, 107/108; also three leaves present but bound out of place) with wear and clear tape repair to a few leaves, some staining and rounding, but still quite retainable. This one has its faults, for sure, being incomplete, but, in all aspects, this is still a classic piece of history and Religious folk art, in a sense, as it carries great calligraphic inscriptions and a later unique home-made hand sewn binding. Taylor. John. London- Tho. James, 1693. Third edition, with amendments. An extremely scarce edition of this miniature Bible. Edited by John Taylor. A Thumb Bible is a paraphrased or abridged version of the Bible, printed in miniature and generally meant for children. The first known Thumb Bible was written by John Weever in verse form. Entitled An Agnus Dei, it appeared in London in 1601. It measured 1.3" x 1.1" and contained 128 pages of six lines. In 1614, John Taylor published this book, titled the Verbum Sempiternum, which also summarised the Bible in verse form. These were designed to provide instruction to children who were not old enough to read the Bible itself. Measures 1.75" x 2.0" Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just the occasional spot and some light uniform browning. Antique 17th C. French Country Book Bible Stand Lectern Original Paint
I am relisting this item because I have come to believe it is older than I first thought; I think it is from the 17th rather than the 18th century. Hand planed and carved wood. Wood peg construction, and fabulous old paint distinguish this French flea market find. The decoration features the Jesuit symbol, with IHS, three thorns below and typical Jesuit cross above the initials. IHS stands for the Holy Name of Jesus; the letters are a Latinization of the first three letter of Jesus' name in Greek. The laurel wreath became associated with Napoleon in the early 19th century. But was used throughout history as a symbol of victory in battle. Usually the Jesuit symbols are surrounded by a circle of sun rays. There may be a special meaning in the unusual combination of symbols here, or it may simply have been the artisan's choice. The figures ... morein the four quadrants may indicate the year 1697, although the"1" and the"6" followed as they are by initials, may be letters. I would love to discover the meaning of all of these symbols. But even without interpretation, the painted decoration on this piece is simply beautiful. The colors are rich and fairly give off light under the warm waxy patina of centuries of use. Photos cannot do this beautiful object justice. It would be a fine Bible or book stand. And would be wonderful as a cookbook stand in the kitchen. Lectern is 15" wide. 9" tall. Original paint on all surfaces, with some wear but very little loss. Old Antique 1867 Small Leather Bound Bible Old and New Testament Lippincott & Co
Here's a very nice mid 1800's antique bible we received recently. This one is leather bound with gold gilded page edges. It is relatively small at about 5 inches by 3.5 inches in face dimensions and just shy of 2 inches thick. This one has a bookmark with letters of unknown meaning and also there is a sentiment indicating the bible was presented as a gift early in it's life. There is a little light scuffing here and there on the leather cover and a little darkness on the end pages. The content pages of the bible are very good and it seems to have been stored or well cared for over many years. It is dated 1867 and was published by Lippincott& Co. in Philadelphia. Antique Oak Wooden Dovetail Bible Box Handmade Jewelry Box Trinket Box
This is an antique handmade dovetail oak wooden box. It has a cross on the top which makes me believe it was used to store a bible. It is in good vintage condition and has a metal latch hook on the front. The inside of the lid is painted brown and it has a purple velvet liner on the bottom inside. Two of the bottom corners do have some damge to the wood but nothing major. The box is 11 3/4 inches long. 7 1/4 inches wide, and 2 inches high with the lid closed. Thanks for looking.

This is a rare Ethiopian Coptic Christian hand written bible manuscript. This particular bible/ manuscript have 64 leaves. 128 pages with text on both sides and 5 pages of paintings/drawings. Each page is scripted by hand in“Geez” the ancient language of Ethiopia that is no longer used today except by the Orthodox Church for religious purposes. The pages are vellum calf or goat skin with black and red ink. The red ink is usually reserved for the names of gods and saints. The bible also has two hand carved wooden covers that are ancient feeling through which holes are drilled and stung with string which goes through all the pages to make an effective binding. Antique Holy Bible John Potter's Standard Edition 1800's Old & New Testament
Here is a very old Bible. I see no dates but think it is mid-1800's. Name of owner is embossed on spine. There are a couple newspaper cut outs in the book- one of her marriage announcement and another about the death of her Mother. I am not a book dealer so unsure correct terminology to describe or how to grade but will attempt a description and if unclear or if info is lacking- please ask. The book measures 3 1/2" wide x 5" x about 1 1/2" thick. cover is black leather with gold embossments. When you open it- you will see that where the cover meets the page there is some separation. This also occurs in the back. The first two pages have a 3/4" tear along lower margin. Leafing through the pages. The binding feels tight and pages are not coming loose- though I do this carefully so as to keep it in the same condition ... moreas found. There are a few pages where there are some random pencil marks- the worst is photographed(though looks like it was probably her toddler and is endearing) and a couple dog eared corners. The edges of pages seen from the outside have the staining to the gold. I have photos showing most of the things I have mentioned so please have a look.

PLEASE Read entire description and look at all photos! This is a beautiful little 1877 ornate leather with gold lettering and clasp Catholic Manual of the Passion published by D. J. Sadlier& Co. 31 Barclay St. New York. Published with the Aprobatioin of His Eminence John Cardinal McKloskey. Archbishop of New York. A complete guide to Catholic Devotion embellished with 175 illustrations and some extras which were found inside. It is from 1800s so does have some issues. But nothing real serious in my opinion. Leather cover is in good shape with a repaired spot along spine towards bottom where alittle leather was missing and seam. Slight bends in a few spots on edging. Leather was conditioned and is nice looking. Inside pages are as expected for age with yellowed/darkened/foxing/dark spots/a few pages have some tears. This is in my opinion ... morein good real shape compared to many I have seen, but due to its age, I would still consider it quite fragile and to be understandably handled with care. Planter is glazed with a"blue dip" giving it a blue/white or blue/light gray marble swirl appearance in some areas(most visible in picture of the baby's arm) Planter is 6" x 3" with a 4-1/2" height to top of baby's head and highest point of planter.
