Manuscript Bible leaf on vellum most likely from Germany circa 1500's. Written in brown ink on parchment in a distinctive Ashkinazic square script. The leaf came from a complete Torah Bible scroll that has deteriorated and what was left from it is several incomplete leaf's. The text. In the Hebrew script is from the Book of Exodus, chapter 9, verse 3 to chapter 9, verse 21. Text is dated within the period based on the characters of the letters. For example the Hebrew Letter"Peh" פ" has a double swirl as the custom of script in that era. The leaf measures approximately 11" x 8. at there longest point though top edges are uneven. Fragments of this age are not found and extremely important for its utmost rarity of the earliest examples of the Ashkenaz Jewish tradition. Vellum Leaf From Dominican Portable Bible 1240 AD
Originally purchased in a lot of several pieces of art at NY city estate auction. We did not know much about this item until we took it out of the frame that it was in. Only then did we notice the backside of the frame was labeled 1240 AD Dominican Portable Bible. We did find a comparable item on the internet out of the University of Minnesota library collection. Both sides of the page are full. The page is still attached to the original mat it was framed in with a small piece of two way tape in the margin. We will let the new owner take it apart. The page measures 7 3/4" long by 5 1/2" wide. Fellow ebayer was kind enough to share this with us: I was able decipher your manuscript. It comes from the Book of Proverbs and includes part of chapter 25. All of chapters 26-28, and part of chapter 29. The text is medieval Latin. Which is ... moredifficult to read due to the extensive use of abbreviation symbols representing entire words or multiple characters within words… so it’s a bit of a puzzle to figure out(and one of my hobbies) Scribes used an abbreviation system in order to conserve precious space on the vellum(animal skin) Further complicating matters is that many of the scripted letters appear very similar. Are connected. And oftentimes there is minimal or no space between words. But readers already familiar with the text and abbreviations(such as travelling Dominican monks/preachers in the 13th century) could read the text without difficulty.
