FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL CIRCA 1450 NUREMBERG MANUSCRIPT LEAF. This terrific 15th century parchment leaf bears 30 lines of elaborate handwritten text tightly penned in Latin. Along with text. 24 lines of which span the length of the leaf, is a hand-drawn design in the lower left corner adjacent to a smaller scroll bracketing a lower paragraph of text. Top edge of leaf is close cropped and lower portion of hand-drawn design is lacking, indicating leaf is fragmentary and was likely separated along folds. King Conrad III established a burgraviate, with the first burgraves coming from the Austrian House of Raab but, with the extinction of their male line around 1190, the burgraviate was inherited by the last count's son-in-law, of the House of Hohenzollern. From the late 12th century to the Interregnum(1254-73) however, the power of the burgraves diminished as the Hohenstaufen emperors transferred most non-military powers to a castellan, with the city administration and the municipal courts handed over to an Imperial mayor from 1173/74. The strained relations between the burgraves and the castellan, with gradual transferral of powers to the latter in the late-14th and early-15th centuries, finally broke out into open enmity, which greatly influenced the history of the city. FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL LATE 18TH CENTURY ACCOUNT BOOK OF THE"BRIG BETSY" This terrific early volume was compiled by ship's owner George Makepeace and captain Alexander Atwood. And chronicles the activities and voyages of the brig Betsy during the year of 1799. Carrying a variety of cargo, the Boston based vessel set sail for a host of tropical ports. Entries include"A Voige to the West Indies and Back" Disbursements at Turks Islands" Disbursements in the Havannah" i.e. Havana, Cuba] St. Thomas" etc. Also referenced are various parties engaged in business with the ship; with several pages bearing Captain Atwood's signature. Notably. Vessel had been captured the previous year by French pirates[i.e. privateers] operating in the Caribbean. During the French and Napoleonic eras. America was engaged in a"quasi" ... morewar with France which resulted in sustained maritime depredations on American commerce. Losses suffered by American ships and their owners at the hands of French privateers and other vessels were staggering. According to a report submitted years later(1827) by Secretary of State Henry Clay, some 444 vessels had been seized from 1793-1800 with losses totalling well into the millions. The brig Betsy, owned by George Makepeace and captained by Alexander C. Atwood, was one of the vessels seized by the French during this tumultuous period. The vessel and its cargo were reclaimed soon, after at considerable cost to Makepeace. The lingering and expensive issue was finally addressed by Congress in 1885 through the French Spoliation Act. ETHIOPIAN Coptic BIBLE Manuscript ANTIQUE Handwritten GE'EZ MONKS Vellum OCCULT
You are bidding on a true piece of Biblical history! Presenting a handwritten Coptic Ethiopian Bible w/ great handpainted sce nes throughout! Written in the Ethiopic(Ge'ez) script. A Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subject of these"Bibles" are generally always Christian, but actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is very difficult as scribes copied old monastic manuscripts using the same materials as had been used for centuries, and have been as old as the 14th century; this carries many examples of a bit of age, with original vellum animal skin pages, faded and worn at the edges, with some folk art drawings and figures as well as more modern color paintings, possibly totems. We could loosely guess this ... moreone originated sometime c1700-1850, with the covers(nicely embossed with a cross pattern) stitching, and hand paintings a bit more contemporary, probably c1900-1950. There are marginal traces of red paint to the page edges as well, origin unknown. A majority of the text are incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces. Written in black. With color religious figure drawings, as shown. This example is bound in square leather covered wooden boards with a cross pattern and border. The cover tied through with twine into the thin leaves. There is some definitive age to the interior of this example, and some staining, which is normal for these rare gems. The twine is holding very firmly. There are 18 leaves/36 pages in this, with 4 modern color figure totem illustrations(one period illustration in black as shown) Obtained in an online auction direct from Ethiopia. Bible measures 3.5" x 4.5" A True treasure. These have sold for $1,000s of dollars, and this particular copy has a true feeling of history and culture, especially with the drawings and aged vellum, as shown, and is extremely rare and unique. Peru manuscript 1595 Spanish colonial document, 2 pages, rare and handwritten
Old document dated 1595. Spanish Colonial Peru manuscript, one sheet with writing on both sides in brown ink. The paper is size 12” x 8 1/2” in good condition, considering the age of more than 400 years. This looks like it was detached from a book or ledger, because the paper has holes on the spine edge where cord once threaded. There’s a few holes where the dark ink has eaten through the paper; otherwise. The bleed-through isn’t too bad. This looks like some kind of accounting record. The paper also has a light watermark in the center of the page. Which looks like a cross surrounded by the outline of an upside-down teardrop. At the bottom of the point are two initials, A” and“C” I can’t read this. So this mystery will have to be translated by someone else! Floral designs, borders, illuminated lettering, combined with a striking title page and hand painted woodcut frontis! Spanning roughly 210 beautiful numbered pages. The writing splits from script to fraktur art, with g orgeous to mbstone motif borders to each leaf. Many stunning watercolor illustrations; including a rampant lion. An oak tree, a chalice, vines, flowers, leaves. all in all a fine piece of 18th century religious folk art! The book is bound in leather. With stamped boards and spine, well worn with gilt stamped borders and the letters J*R* in the center of the front board, 1783 on the lower portion in gilt as well. The covers are heavily warped with the hinges compromised. Much due to very old dampstaining ... moredamage. S ome of the leather is peeling a little bit. But nothing major. There are marbled gilt endpapers, but there are also damage by dampstaining. All of the leaves are present and in order, and quite well preserved, minus a few dampstains in front and scattered stains here and there. This book was found in an estat e sale in Mexico. Numerous wood cut measurements, slabs of cord wood, hauling and splitting of logs, timber, strips, shingles, floor planks, box lids, pail bottoms, picket fence rails, railroad ties[sleepers" joists, pump logs, clapboards, lumber, chestnut, oak, cherry, hard pine, white pine, hemlock, spruce, etc. Ledger provides a fascinating glimpse into the workings of a New England sawmill over 150 years ago, along with a treasure trove of local genealogy by way of numerous customer names. Hinsdale ... moreis a small town located in Cheshire County. New Hampshire, with a current population of just over 4,000 inhabitants. Situated in the southwestern corner of the state, Hinsdale was chartered in 1753. It was named for Colonel Ebenezer Hinsdale, member of a prominent Deerfield, Massachusetts family, whose mother had been taken captive in the famed Deerfield Massacre of 1704. Graduated from Harvard College, Hinsdale was ordained to become a missionary for Indians of the Connecticut River Valley. Instead, he would serve as chaplain at Fort Dummer, an important trading post on the Connecticut River, later enlisting as an officer in the army. Then. In 1742, he established Fort Hinsdale, including a trading post and gristmill, reportedly at his own expense. The town's earliest history recounts Indian assaults, raids and captivities. 5 Fragments of a Scarce c1400-1450s handwritten vellum manuscript! Extracted from old post incunable binding! Each fragment measures roughly 2" x 1.25" 1.5" rectangular. With handwritten red and black Gothic Latin( text to both sides, in some cases just one side. Probably Italian, c1400-1450. Some soiling, as shown, with a few instances of worm damage, paper covering still remaining(mostly to backs) chipping and soiling. Extracted from a mid 1500s religious work folio printed in Venice. c1600s Manuscript HANDWRITTEN Sinning CATHOLIC Heresy VIRGIN MARY Original Sin
This is an exciting and unique manuscript fragment that was discovered folded within the text of Alexander Ross' Apocalypsis/ Ad vancers of Heresie(165 8) That looks to be written in a hand from about the same period(i.e. roughly mid-17th century) Handwriting on both front and back of half-page fragment, with about 15 lines on both sides. Some of the handwriting is in English and some smaller parts in Latin. From what can be deciphered of the English writing, it is certainly of a religious nature mentioning both the Virgin Mary and Christ, e.g. All men sinners even the blessed Virgin. Some of the writing may even relate directly to the 1658 Heresie printing. As the manuscript looks to have two different hands from the same period writing brief exchanges with one another debating whether or not the Virgin Mary sinned(or perhaps had Original ... moreSin? Another quote, for example, says" All men except the blessed Virgin" And another says" our Lord Jesus Christ wear for his honor and by his[ protection preserved clean from all sin. Yet concerning[y] rest they they teach as we doe that all have sinned. Certainly worthy of further investigation. No names indicated on fragment or on origi nal book. RARE GERMAN FRAKTUR HANDWRITTEN CATHOLIC PRAYER/ DEVOTIONAL MANUSCRIPT BOOK. DATED 1783 ON THE COVER! Includes great watercolor artwork. Floral designs, borders, illuminated lettering, combined with a striking title page and hand painted woodcut frontis! Spanning roughly 210 beautiful numbered pages. The writing splits from script to fraktur art, with g orgeous to mbstone motif borders to each leaf. Many stunning watercolor illustrations; including a rampant lion. An oak tree, a chalice, vines, flowers, leaves. all in all a fine piece of 18th century religious folk art! The book is bound in leather. With stamped boards and spine, well worn with gilt stamped borders and the letters J*R* in the center of the front board, 1783 on the lower portion in gilt as well. The covers are heavily warped with the hinges compromised. Much due to very old ... moredampstaining damage. S ome of the leather is peeling a little bit. But nothing major. There are marbled gilt endpapers, but there are also damage by dampstaining. All of the leaves are present and in order, and quite well preserved, minus a few dampstains in front and scattered stains here and there. This book was found in an estat e sale in Mexico. MO many years ago by a fellow collect or. The last page carries a later hand. Or so it se ems. Denoting the name Therese Steinbrenner, and noting some events in 1815 and 1835. Respectively. Confederate Soldier/Chaplain Handwritten Manuscript book
Rev W.R. Gwaltney Original Handwritten Work book(The Confederate Chaplain who was part of the attack on Fort Hamby) W.R. Gwaltney was the Chaplain to the North Carolina First Regiment of Infantry. He was a major participant in the famous"Fort Hamby Affair" involving Northern deserters who were sacking the countryside and bullying farmers and their families. Fort Hamby. As it was called had belonged to a woman named Hamby. A group of renegade Union deserters had commandeered the building and turned it into a fortress from which they sallied forth to terrorize the local country people who were nearly powerless to ably defend themselves. At that time all the able-bodied were still not returned from the war. A group of citizenry, however, gathered together including confederate soldiers such as Rev Gwaltney and attacked the fort. They ... morewon their battle and executed the terrorists following one of the most heroic efforts of that amazing time. This is an original handwritten note book of Gwaltney filled. Most likely, during the reconstruction period. It contains along with lists of parishoners for his church a 20 page hand written, essay/sermon, entitled" Be Yourself. there are also other sermon notes. This manuscript book is, of course, unknown and unpublished. Good condition. Gwaltney's account of the'Fort Hamby Affair" is well known.
