If not the best. Early Labor Movement engravings ever published. It is titled" The Strike in the Coal Mines- Meeting of the Molly M’Guire Men. This incredibly detailed engraving was drawn by two French artists. Paul Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier. Starting in 1873, these two men collaborated on a number of excellent illustrations, and hold a high place ... moreamong the artists who recorded the American West. Indeed, in the Fall of 1873 Harper’s Weekly commissioned these two artists to embark upon a nearly year-long expedition from New York City to San Francisco. Wandering about and producing a pictorial record of their journey– the illustrations which they produced resulted in some of the best wood engravings of the period, and they were published in Harper’s over a time-span of several years! This was one of those engravings. Produced while the artists were still in the Northeast. The black-and-white tones of the wood engraving technique add to the solemnity already conveyed by the expressions on the men’s faces. Here were men who. THIS ITEM: This is a wall map of New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania issued by the National Survey Co. Chester Vt. Measures about 46 by 36 inches. Not dated, but the population figures are from the 1920 Census, so it was made sometime during the 1920s. Railroad and trolley lines are shown. The map is complete and intact with wooden rods both at the top and bottom. The top rod still has the original string to hang it on a wall. It really displays very nicely. It's been stored for decades ... morerolled up, so it will need a little time to"stretch out" All items are guaranteed genuine& vintage, no reproductions. Please see the picture to see the actual area shown and excellent detail on this map. The condition of the steel plate engraving is as shown in the high resolution scan. There are no tears. Rips or damage. This plate has some age toning as should be expected. The paper is single sided with a pressed fold in the middle. Overall this 165 year old steel engraving is in very fine condition. With proper matting, this map could be nicely displayed with no restoration. The size of the map is approximately 7" by 5" not including the margin area.
