Here is an absolutely delightful find. a set of six heavy carved oak chairs with shell. Leaves and other carvings including column front legs and rush bottom seats, imported through Edinburgh, Scotland and in a Henry II style, these most probably were manufactured there in Scotland or perhaps England in the early to mid-twentieth century. I have noted in my description of condition above that three of the rush bottom seats on this set is broken through, and simply replaced at present with a wood board underneath the seat cushion. I have taken this into account and am selling these chairs"as is" for a great price for someone looking to invest a little love into bringing them back to their full glory by replacing the seats. These side dining chairs stand 37 inches tall and measure 17 inches wide by 16 1/2 inches front to back. Two matching ladderback chairs with rush seats. Sturdy. No wobble. Overall height 41" Back only height 24.5" Seat area front 16" back area of seat 13.75" Seat is only 15.5" inches from the floor so it is low by today's standards. These chairs have the usual patina from age, including small scratches. There is no indication of maker and may have been locally commissioned here in NE Connecticut. However, they are a very nice example of the style and would look great flanking a large fireplace or in a sunny reading room. Sold only as a pair.

Description: Here is a real nice pair of maple Hitchcock chairs that came from a stately home in Hartford CT. One of those homes where the woman had her portrait hanging over the mantle. Many fine items came out of this home including this nice pair of rush seated chairs. They are unsigned but the style is unmistakable with the turnings and the plugs on the front rail and where the pillow back top rail meets the uprights. I don’t know if this is the original rush seating but both are in very fine shape. It looks like the person who did the rush also used small nails to keep it secured safely. The patina and color of these chairs are both first rate. There are no real issues to mention. These are solid chairs that seem to have been barely sat upon as you can see in my pictures. Each with a delicately stenciled grapes-and-leaves decoration, as well as other stenciling on the front edge of the seats, on the top bars, and on some of their rails. There are also subtle areas of red under the green. The chair backs and the table bases each feature a raised pineapple pattern incorporated in raised acanthus leaf scrolls. The pineapples are orange ... morein color. All of the chairs have arms. Their seats are rushed with a thick, extremely nice quality, natural fiber cording. The natural fibers have a golden tan color, with medium to darker brown fibers included. This is a stunning dining set. The set measures as follows: Each chair is 39.5" tall. The seats are 17.5" in height. They are 21.75" front to back at the leg measurement. The front legs are 20.25" wide and the arm width is 19.75" The seats are 18" x 18" Each dining pedestal is 29" tall. They are 22.5" in diameter at the top and 14.25" at the bottom. Each of the table medallions is 12.25" in diameter. We have pictured it with the original. 6' glass top, but it is chipped and is not included. The table can handle an 8' glass top or, each base can be used separately and a large round top would also work beautifully on one base. We are pleased to offer this EXCEPTIONAL pair of 19th century chairs. The pair feature heavily carved. Walnut frames. They are high back with a slightly Gothic profile. The backs are open in a Ladder Back fashion with large, rounded medallions at the tops. The rounded sections are arched and scalloped on their lower sections. They are exquisitely carved in an intricate urn and floral pattern which is similar to that of the French Brittany style. A carved, scalloped design is also present. The lower cross"ladder" supports are arched, with the arches notched in a flower petal design, and have a center carved fan shaped accent. The upper side supports feature sections of elongated turned wood and unique finials. The legs are turned wood with both upper and lower supports. The front legs are accented with double turned wood supports ... moreas well as an upper support which repeats the design of the ladder back pieces. This style is known as a"mustache chair" for the shape of the handholds at the tops of the backs. The chairs/frames are original but the caning is certainly newer. The frames are a hardwood we can't identify for sure. The frames are fairly tight and solid with just a little give. The caning is in very good condition. These are really FABULOUSLY comfortable. 2 Mission style chairs that do not take up a lot of room. They have woven Cattail Rush seats in a diamond pattern, very possibly hand woven. I have not found any obvious defects in these chairs really worth mentioning. Great for a kitchen or dining table or use at a desk. You could use one in a bedroom to sit and put on your shoes. Wonderful to have when you have a larger group of people at your house, like the Holiday get-togethers or a birthday party. Price is cheap! Only $4.75 more per chair than folding chairs that look ugly and are NOT comfortable that you could get at Wal-mart! Plus these make a much nicer impression on people and can be left out year round. They are solid wood with a cherry finish, possibly cherry wood, I'm not sure because I'm not an expert. None of that particle board ... morestuff! My father purchased these chairs and did not ever use them. He was known to only buy quality products! He liked to"collect" furniture. It was in the late 1960's when he brought them home. They look almost mint. They have a couple of very minor rubs or light scratches and I do not know if they were there when purchased, or if they happened during storage. Measurements are: total height- 34"x 18" wide x 16 1/2" deep x 18" seat height. They are not very heavy in weight, only about 15 lbs. each before packaging. Only 2 available. Sold as a set of 1. No returns, no refunds, no exchanges. Each chair is slightly different than the other with different turnings on each one. Indicating they are not factory made but primitive early era furniture. These wonderful chairs measure approximately 33 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 14 inches deep with a seat bottom height from floor of 16 inches. They each weigh approximately 10 pounds by themselves without any packing materials or 20 pounds total for the both of them. Here's what I stated about these marvelous chair's condition: Pair of early 1800s chairs shows very aged dark patina with one chair having the painted artwork on the seat backs worn away to be barely visible. Other chair's ... moreartwork is more visible in all areas. Finish loss on surfaces especially legs. Nicks. Dings, scratches, scuffs, and worn, rounded edges all evidence of great age and adds much character to the pieces. A shallow wood split noted on top back front splat of one chair. Otherwise, chairs are incredibly strong, solid, sturdy, and stable and able to withstand a substantial amount of weight. Offered here a charming pair of 19th century Sheraton Hitchcock stenciled arm chairs with rush seats. Both chairs have a beautifully stenciled fruit bowl and floral decoration on their middle back slat. As well as other stenciling on the front edge of the seat, on the top bar, and on some of their rails. These chairs are unsigned, nice and sturdy, not wobbly, and they have some scuffs due to normal use. Both rush seats, however, have a small area where the rush has been torn and worn-away. The chair has 2 front Spanish feet or Braganza toe, which is a hoof-like, grooved and flared foot which ends in an inward curving scroll. It was introduced from Portugal during the Restoration period and used in the 18th century on English and American furniture, especially on turned legs in the William and Mary and the Queen Anne period. The chair is a rush-seated country version. The legs are block and turned which is a William and Mary trait that continued to be used in simple country chair designs after the mid-18th century long after the Queen Anne style became fashionable. The back is narrow with high side curved posts descending to the seat; the chair is an open back(the seat rail and the back are not joined) the back splat is vase-shaped descending to a cross bar attached to the lower side posts. The seat is rush; there are double ring turned side stretchers and a single front ring turned stretcher. There appears to be a simple back stretcher. It is difficult to determine the type of wood of the chair, although it appears to be mahogany in the photos, but this type of country chair was usually made of mixed woods. One can say the chair is

This auction is for a set of six(6) hand-carved solid wood country style chairs with rush seats. Made in France circa 1880-1899. The chairs are in very good condition, but the rush is in need of replacement. I have owned these chairs for over ten years. They were purchased from Hideaway House Antiques Inc. In Los Angeles. The dealer labels are still intact on all six chairs. Because of the size of the items. I will accept either local pickup in Los Angeles, or freight delivery. Buyer pays actual shipping cost.
