VERY UNUSUAL! ANTIQUE CAST IRON FLOOR GRATE w UNIQUE STAR LOUVER MECHANISM
This auction is for an antique cast iron floor grate with a very unusual star lever adjustment mechanism! This grate is cast iron and has a steel star in the center that when turned rotates the mechanism below to adjust the louvers. I have never seen this kind of mechanism on an antique grate before. It is quite unique! The grate measures 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" and it is in very good condition. It opens and closes quite well and smoothly and is clean with no damage to the ornate design, although there is a small chip on one end of the grate but it still presents well. 1870s-1910 Cast Iron Victorian Floor&Ceiling Grate Vent&Louver-2 PC Fancy-16x11
These came out of an 1870s. 2 story house& were being used together even though the pattern doesn't match exactly. The one w/the louvers was in an opening in the floor of an upstairs bedroom while the flat one, without the louvers, was covering an opening on the ceiling in the room directly below& they were lined up to make a unit. Before central heating became the standard. These were in all old homes, usually located next to a chimney flue to let the heat from a free standing stove rise to the upstairs. The outside dimensions are 16 inches long x 11 inches wide. The size of the louver box is 13.5 x 8.5. So the hole in the floor would need to be a little bigger than that to allow ease of clearance to set it in. If you'll be using them as they were intended. Vintage Victorian architectural salvage cast iron heat grate with louvers. 13 3/4 by 11 3/4 inches. Fits a 12 by 10 inch hole. 5 inches tall. One screw is missing from the sheet metal sides. There is a crack in one edge. It will need to be welded. Dents in the sheet metal sides that go into the floor. A lot of surface rust. This has the decorative round insert to fill the stove pipe hole. The louvers are made with a cut that can be punched out. This is so the louvers could be used if a stove pipe is in place. Here's an old cast iron heating floor vent-grate. It measures 15 1/2" in diameter across the top and it is about 2 3/4" deep. It is 13 1/2" across the rim that sits in the floor. It weighs about 17 lbs. It has has all over surface rust. You can easily manually move the louver's from the underside but is a little harder with the slide button piece at the top.

The louver is stamped PAT DEC 7 1915. The louver opens and closes as it should with the control knob. The louver portion measures 13 7/8" by 11 7/8" by 1 3/4" The top floor grate cover measures 16" by 14" The top grate cover is a copper brownish color.
