VERY UNUSUAL! ANTIQUE CAST IRON FLOOR GRATE w UNIQUE STAR LOUVER MECHANISM
This auction is for an antique cast iron floor grate with a very unusual star lever adjustment mechanism! This grate is cast iron and has a steel star in the center that when turned rotates the mechanism below to adjust the louvers. I have never seen this kind of mechanism on an antique grate before. It is quite unique! The grate measures 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" and it is in very good condition. It opens and closes quite well and smoothly and is clean with no damage to the ornate design, although there is a small chip on one end of the grate but it still presents well. Antique Victorian Cast Iron Heat Grate Duct Vent Louver Mechanism Set
Up for auction is a set of antique Victorian cast iron grate louver mechanism. These came off a grate I rescued from an old burnt out home in Toledo Ohio's Old West End prior to being torn down a few years back. I wanted the grate for a project. The one end piece has a patent date of Dec. 22. 1885. Comes with all screws and the hard to find brass louver adjusting knob. The grate these came off measures 14 x 12. The grate is pictured for reference but not part of this auction. I have the surround this sets into. However. It is cracked at the screw hole where the mechanisms would attach. There is old paint that needs to come off before repainting. It comes off easy if you warm it up with a torch before scraping. I removed all the screws and reinserted them so they come appart easy from the frame. If you wish to buy only the grate face I can remove them. No cracks or welds. This came out of an 1870s. 2 story house& it was being used with another flat, same size grate in the room below. That other flat grate is being sold separately. The patterns of the 2 don't match exactly but from 1 room to another, it isn't noticeable. This offering is for the one w/the louvers. Which was in an opening in the floor of an upstairs bedroom while the flat one, without the louvers, was covering an opening on the ceiling in the room directly below& they were lined up to make a unit. Before central heating became the standard. These were in all old homes, usually located next to a chimney flue to let the heat from a free standing stove rise to the upstairs. The outside dimensions are 16 inches long x 11 inches wide. The size of the louver box is 13.5 x 8.5. So the hole in the floor would need to be a little bigger ... morethan that to allow ease of clearance to set it in. The flat piece without the louvers is also 16 x 11.
