American Brilliant Cut Glass info: This type of glass was produced to compete with European lines being imported into the United States. Early pieces were often unmarked so consumers wouldn't know the difference between American and European wares. Marked pieces of American Brilliant cut glass are prized by collectors with the names Hawkes and Libbey being familiar to most seasoned antiquers. Marks on cut glass can be difficult to locate and read. Identifying older. Quality cut glass can be confusing to the novice collector. It’s wise to do thorough research before paying high prices to add pieces to a collection. The American Brilliant Period in cut glass history began around 1850 and lasted into the early 1900's. Immigrants helped supply glass houses in the United States with skilled cutters allowing them to develop a product rivaling European cut glass. Prior to that time, most cut glass pieces were produced in England, Ireland and France. When American manufacturers displayed their wares at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, their clear, bright, leaded glass garnered new respect when compared to glass exhibited from other countries. From that point on, American cut glass became extremely popular as a gift item and most mid-income to affluent households held at least a few pieces to grace their elegant tables. The bowls came with the service of Roman Key-Frosted Band flint glass(Union Glass Co. c. 1860s) I listed over the last few weeks. The bowls have a handsome Neo-Classical inspired design with deep engraved Roman/ Greek Key pattern decorating a wide band around the exterior and star detail to the base. There are two sizes of bowls in this set: ten of the smaller size and five of the larger size. All of the bowls are exceptionally deep. Especially for cut glass. Each bowl is nicely cut with a wreath of leaves around the rim. The smaller size bowls have a polished pontil mark on the underside, while the larger bowls are cut with a large sunburst design. The bowls are very well made. I can find no markings on these bowls. One of the large bowls has a substantial chip to the rim. And one of the smaller bowls has a small chip to the rim as well. These are exquisite. Cut glass candy dishes, small(5 1/2" In diameter) shallow(approximately 1" deep) bowls, pre-WW II, Germany, maker unknown. Lemon yellow in color with a rose etched on their bottoms- a five star(Star of David) shape surrounds the rose. Their edges are scalloped with ribbing along them. The bowls are absolutely beautiful ... moreand very ornately cut. A beautiful crystal faceted bowl with prisms of color. Each bowl has a square cut pedestal footed base with star cut bottom. The bowl has a flaired rim edge with sawtooth cut lip. The cuttings are fans, diamonds, triangular finecut at the top, beveled bands, center has diamond cut band, with a finecut diamond band near the bottom of bowl. These pieces are not marked or signed but have a beautiful clear and colorful prism cutting. They are both heavy pieces and have been well cared for. I purchased this set from an estate in St Louis along with other pieces of ABP. The bowls are in very good condition, one bowl has a shallow flake chip located on the bottom of foot. I don't know much about them as there is no mark or attribution but we purchased them with the understanding that they are antique and either English or French. The glass is old and I can still see the marks from when the little spouts were formed. These measure 5 1/4" from spout to spout. 3 3/4" tall and are in excellent condition for their age. They do show some signs of age surface scratches and two of them each has a tiny fleabite to the middle cut rings. However, there are no other chips, cracks or damage. Antique Lot 2 Victorian Cranberry Glass Bowls 5.25" Cut Bottom/ Gold Rim 5" Up for auction is a Victorian. Antique lot of 2 cranberry glass bowls. The one with the gold rim is 4 7/8" in diameter and 2.75" tall. The bottom is cut flat. There are no chips, cracks or breaks. There's some gold paint loss. The other bowl is 5.25" in diameter and 2.5" tall. The bottom of the bowl has a cut dimple. As in the photos, there's a single tiny nice on the lip-no other flaws. I purchased these at an estate auction and am uncertain of their exact age but believe them to be late 19th century. Please note that my shipping time is up to 5 business days as I have multiple jobs and can only ship one day a week.
