I am not sure what this is called but it is solid brass and has the hallmark of Wilcox and Crittenden. It is in very good condition and measures 3 3/8 inches by 2 3/8 inches. The"eye' on top is about an inch and 1/2 by 3/4 of an inch. Please email me if you know what this hardware is called. I assume it was used to tie down boats. These were painted with grey paint and still has some of the grey paint remaining. The pulleys measure 4 1/2" dia. x 1/2" wide. The mounting plate has 4 holes that are 3/16" dia. and are located 15/16" center to center across the width and 5 5/8" center to center across the length. Unused. Vintage Wilcox, Crittenden, heavy duty oar locks. Quality galvanized steel that should provide years of service. Great find. Has a"WC" cast into them. From Wikipedia: In 1849 William Walter Wilcox. A young and aggressive factory worker, went into business with Ira Penfield, his employer. Together they continued manufacturing Penfield's recently patented grommet(a small metal device used in the raising and lowering of sails) in the basement of this building, and established the firm of Penfield and Wilcox. Wilcox then went on the road, successfully selling this new device, and establishing a coast-to-coast reputation. When Penfield retired in 1857, Wilcox took in Joseph Hall Jr. as a partner and the firm known as Wilcox and Hall was established. Vintage Unused Wilcox and Crittenden Oar Locks Rowboat Boat Nautical Maritime
For your consideration is an unused pair of vintage Wilcox and Crittenden oar locks. They are in excellent unused vintage condition. The post and socket will need to be smoothed and worked for a proper fit as these were never mounted to a boat. They are cast galvanized steel with the Wilcox and Crittenden emblem showing on both pieces as well as a#1 on both oar holders. The posts are 2' inches long and have a 2" inch opening. Up for auction is a pair of Wilcox crittenden oar locks and brackets. The oar locks are galvanized. And are painted white.They are stamped with the WC logo.Item is offered to US residence only. No international shipping. Please let me know if there are any questions. History of Wilcox. Crittenden& Co. In 1847. Middletown was New England's largest inland port, and it was in that year thecompany that would become Wilcox, Crittenden& Co. Inc. was established. According to thecentennial history of the company, it was in Ben Butler's sail loft in Middletown that EldridgePenfield first conceived of developing a metal grommet(later to be called the sail eyeletgrommet) to replace the rope grommets that were currently being used by sailmakers. In partnership with his uncle. Ira Penfield, Eldridge Penfield formed the firm of E. H. I.K. ... morePenfield. The business was opened in a small building at the rear of the property located atMain and William Street in Middletown, and was the first company in America to produce metalgrommets. The first grommets were stamped out using hand presses which were operated by thepartners and by William Walter Wilcox, whom they had hired. For the next two years. Penfield tried to market the new grommets by utilizing travelingsalesmen who brought and sold on consignment and kept most of the profits. After thisunsuccessful period, Eldridge Penfield sold out his interest to Ira Penfield, and Wilcox investedhis savings and became a partner in the new firm called Penfield& Wilcox. By using more direct marketing techniques. Wilcox was able to overcome the oppositionthat developed on the part of journeymen sailmakers who feared that the use of the new grommetwould reduce the need for their services. The company prospered and added other items to theirinventory based on the needs of sailmakers. There are some minor nicks and srcatches from decades of use, the screen on the bottom of the pump is loose, but overall operates as it should with neither the outer tube, or pump/handle tube bent.
