Marked on upper portion in black lettering: JOHN BLISS& COTAFFRAIL LOG"says patented Nov 15, 1864, April 3, 1867, June 6, 1876& September 17, 1878. This unit has a porcelain face with 3 dials that register different increments of distance traveled. The top of the porcelain face is marked with the maker's name: John Bliss& Co Taffrail Log. New York, USA. The heavy brass Taffrail log measures 7.5" With the hanging attachment is measures 10" The device is in a good antique shape. This device. Named after the Taffrail(the rail around the stern of a ship) Taffrail log was the nautical mechanism used to measure speed in knots and miles per hour. Rare Vintage Brass Negus Taffrail Log with Spinner with Original Rope
The Negus Taffrail Log is 11" long and weighs 10lbs. The face is 5" in diameter. I have not polished it but it is in beautiful shape. The Spinner is 10" in diameter and the rope looks original.The Spinner is lowered from the ship and is attached to the taffrail log and it spins to determine the speed of the ship. This is an unusual and interesting display item. The Spinner weighs 5 lbs. The Log and the Spinner are all brass and the face is enameled and very clean.

You are buying a Rare 1900's Negus Taffrail Log Complete With Register. Rotor And Line& Sinker. This is one of the rarest items I have ever found and had to do some research to provide a accurate description of the item. The Register converts the rotor's revolutions into nautical miles. The set includes a home made box, Register, Rotor and Line& Sinker to hold the Rotor under water. The Register was mounted on the Taffrail(the rail across the stern of your boat) and was connected to the rotor by a tow-line and sinker. The register measures 6"tall, 2 3/4" wide at the widest point. The dial is 1 7/8" in diameter with a white enameled face signed Negus Patent Log. It is missing one screw that holds the glass cover in place but other than that it is in excellent condition with no visible damage. Vintage Brass Cherub Taffrail Log Spinner Nautical Antique
This piece was used for determining the speed of a vessel in the days before electronic knot meters. On each fin is an anchor and T.W. Cherub. Also on one fin is the number 261. On another fin is T. Walker& Son Ltd. Birmingham England. It is a brass finned head with a rope attached to an egg shaped brass weight. This is the portion that is trailed in the water and spins up the shipboard end. Piece measures 48" including the rope) The finned piece measures 14" Brass could stand polishing. Very good condition.

This is a great piece. Used for finding the speed of a ship. Nothing has been cleaned or polished. All parts move. Patent Dates of 30 Aug 1876 in England and 6 Aug. 1876 USA. Main body is 10.5 inches in length and adding on the bracket gives it an overall length of 13.5 inches. The fish is well used but no damage. Has Trademark above a star that has an M inside. It is 14.5" long. A great piece for the nautical collector.

Vintage Nautical intstrument Taffrail log by John Hand
John E. Hand& Sons was begun by British immigrant John Hand just after his arrival in the United States in 1872. At the age of 21. He was an ambitious and talented instrument maker. He opened for business on York Street in Philadelphia where he manufactured logs. Peloruses, and adjusted compasses. So skilled was he in the art of nautical instruments that he became known as the first man in America who could adjust a compass aboard an iron ship. Over the years. He built increasingly larger factories, first in Philadelphia and then in New Jersey. He died in 1927 as the nation's leading expert in maritime instrumentation. A taffrail log is an object dragged from the stern of the vessel to calculate the vessel's speed through the water. The unit comes with the rotator or spinner. You are buying this vintage Walker's Taffrail ships log that was made in the early 1900's in England. I have no way of testing the unit for any accuracy but nothing leads me to believe that it would not work however I an selling this as is without returns. Please be aware of that before bidding. Having said that this thing is a precision beauty[ my dad was a tool& die maker and taught me the meaning of quality in tools] and appears to function. The brass fins are free of any dings or bends so the accuracy should be true when spinning. On the old label inside the box it reads for up to 20 knots speed. The box has dovetail joints but looks to have been painted at some time. It is quite sturdy and holds the items well. The mechanics on the dial piece turn as intended with no issues. No cracks. This is a nautical"speedometer" from before the days of electronics. One determines the speed of the vessel by attaching the meter to the aft rail(the"taffrail" and letting out a length of line that connects a small weighted propeller to the meter. As the propeller spins. The meter measures the distance run, and the sailor records the beginning and ending numbers over a specific time period to calculate the vessel's speed. This is a"Negus Improved Patent Log for Smaller Vessels, with rustless bearings, made in the 1920s by John Negus in Brooklyn, NY, and patented in 1892. Vintage Antique JOHN BLISS & Co Brass Taffrail Log 1876 Sailing Ship
This is a JOHN BLISS& Co. New York(1857-1957) This taffrail log was an instrument that displayed the distance a ship traveled on this register which was attached to the taffrail(after most railing) at a ship's stern. This Log with the three inline recording dials in a tubular housing was most likely manufactured after 1876 when a patent for this design was issued to J& GH Bliss. Besides the marking behind the glass there is a 316 stamped in the bottom and a 44 stamped on the outside below the bottom of the window. The Log measures 9.5 inches. Selling as is. Antique General Electric Type TL Taffrail Log for decor. Parts or restoration as shown. 10 1/2" x 5 1/4" x 7 1/4" weighing approx. 8 1/4 pounds. Very nice copper bronze patina. Original worn black paint. Glass lens cracked as shown and it is soldered in place making it tricky to replace. Sold as not working though I have not tried it except to spin the wheel, and the needle did not move, plus the small tenths needle seems stuck at 6 1/4. This seems to be one of the more rare types of vintage Taffrail logs. As is. As shown. For sale is a very interesting and unique item. The Negus Taffrail Log itself and the Cepheus box that it's in. Please make sure to read the description below to have a complete understanding of what's for sale. Below is the description of the Negus instrument from the Smithsonian's website: Negus boasted that their Improved Taffrail Log was"the best ever manufactured. It features a swivel-bearing mount for the recording element that was designed by John S. Negus and intended to reduce the irregularities encountered in rough seas. Its large dial reads to 100. And an inset dial reads to 10. New, it cost $27. The U.S. Navy transferred this example to the Smithsonian in 1950. It should be noted that the item currently for sale reads to 50. Not 100 like is stated in the Smithsonian's statement. This is the Negus Improved ... morePatent Log with Rustless Steel Bearings, for Small Vessels. The bearings still work very well. It comes with the original information and instruction sheet. It's very fragile along the middle crease and is almost in two pieces. The fact that it still exists with the instrument is amazing. The"torpedo" shaped part is stamped"NEGUS" and also has a"K" towards the tip. It's attached to a long white nylon rope that appears"like-new" or never used. The other very interesting aspect of this item is the nautical lacquered wooded box that reads"CEPHEUS LOG" It's in very good condition and is very sturdy. To the best of my knowledge. Cepheus stands for the USS Cepheus(AKA-18) The USS Cepheus was an Andromeda Class Attack Cargo Ship that served during WW2. It carried cargo destined to the Normandy Invasion. This auction item may have been kept on the ship and used for smaller vessels on the ship. A full description of the USS Cepheus' service history can be found on the Navy's navsource.org. An Antique Taffrail Speed Log in"as found" condition. This was part of the log that was used to measure a ship's speed before electrical gauges. A very nicely made piece with a nice patina to the brass. All of the vanes are marked T.W. CHERUB. One is marked T. WALKER. It measures 15 1/2" in length by 6" wide to the outside of the vanes.
