Complete Set 40 Vintage Dettra Maritime Nautical Marine Yacht Signal Code Flags
Complete Set! 40 Vintage Dettra Maritime Nautical Marine Signal Code Flag Set Includes all letters A through Z. The 3 repeater flags, all the numbers 0 through 9, and the Code or Answering Pennant. These were found at an estate all bunched up in a bag- I have not attempted to clean or press them as I like to leave things in their"found" condition as much as possible. They are kind of wrinkled and could use a mild clean if you are so inclined. There is no mold or musty smell to them. No smell of smoke. All of the are in very good condition, other than the ones with issues which I have listed below, and photographed for you. Every one has the sisal rope and the wood toggle. Every one is marked with the Dettra name on the edge of the flag. These state they are"Size 0" but for reference, the letter flags measure about 15-1/2" ... morex 10" each. Letter J flag has a large hole in it- is the the blue and white striped one shown in the photos. Letter U flag is in pretty rough shape- it is the red and white checker one shown in the photos. Letter R flag has flag has a hole in it. I ran out of photos allotted by ebay. But would be happy to send a photo to you if you message me and request it. The hole is about the size of a quarter and is on the yellow part of the"cross" Letter Q flag has a small hole in it. But again. Ran out of photos allotted by ebay. This one is a bit smaller than a quarter and is near the outer edge of the flag. Number 7 flag has a tear on the edge- it is the yellow and red pennant flag shown in the photos. Number 4 flag has a hole near the end- it is the red and white striped pennant flag shown in the photos. The plastic storage bag is pretty beat up. I just decided to keep it with the set anyway. I checked all of these over pretty well when inventorying them. I think I spotted any significant flaws and have described the in the listing. The make is Bulldog by Dettra Co. and are made of thick cloth with heavy stitching. Great Quality! These came from an old estate of a boat/ navy man in Midwest. They are old! Each Flag Pattern represents a Letter or signal to other ships. They all have old rope and wood dowel used to tether them together on a mast. I'm selling them together in one lot given the vintage- I wish there were more but these letter signals are all there was. The Semaphore flag signaling system is a system even in these days of radio and satellite communications is used by the US Navy. Research further tells us that the U.S. Navy uses the international alphabet flags. Numeral pennants, numeral flags, and special flags and pennants for visual signaling. These signal flags are used to communicate while maintaining radio silence. Navy Signalmen transmit messages by hoisting a flag or ... morea series of flags on a halyard or by hand-signaling. Each side of the ship has halyards and a"flag bag" containing a full set of signal flags. Signals unique to the Navy are used when communicating with other U.S. Navy or allied forces. WWII Era International Maritime Signal Flags
World War II era international maritime signal flags. Size 6. The ones that are open are dated 1943 and 1944. I did not open the ones that are sealed. There are 43 in all. The full alphabet plus an extra Charlie, Golf, 2 Foxtrots, 2 India, 2 Oscar, 2 Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Tango, Whiskey, 2 Yankee and Zulu. There are two of them that are new old stock, still have the tags on. The others, might be new as well, I haven't opened to see. This was from an estate sale of a man that worked for Foss Tugs in Seattle. One of the signal flags is marked U.S.S. Kingfish. The flags measure approximately 32" by 31" They all have a musty/engine room type smell. I imagine they could be washed. Of the flags that were opened, the(Q)uebec seemed to have the most wear to it. Please allow for some subtle spots of foxing from age. Each flag was very well crafted; maintaining excellent structural integrity and vivid color in red and white.
