Antique Marine Brass Ship's Clinometer Fitted Case Boxed Paris c1870 Maritime
You are viewing an unusual French clinometer in its original fitted case. I believe this was made for a marine vessel either to test the pitch or roll of the hull. Or to guage the"trim" of the vessel. From the materials used and the type of box used, I would estimate this was made some time between 1865 and 1875 or thereabouts. The top of the box is stamped with the maker's name(Martelin) the type of instrument(Niveau' or Level) and the original owner's initials, F.B. The instrument itself is stamped"Breveté S.G.D.G" and has some engine turned decoration. The pendulum needle is blued steel. As is the spring tightening the moveable needle. It is surprisingly sensitive and appears to be in good working order. The wood case is covered with stamped faux leather- some type of canvas- and the carrying handle ... moreand escutcheon plate is made from brass. The instrument itself measures approximately 8 1/8 inches in length and approximately 3 1/4 inches tall. The case. Which is lined with purple and blue velvet is approximately 9 inches by 4 inches by 1 3/4 inches tall. Both clinometer and case are in reasonable shape. Some corrosion and pitting to the blued steel and steel needles. Wear and tear to the case including some worm holes; rubbed corners; staining and dirt; as well as a missing part to the front clasp. Please note. I have not attempted to clean either the instrument or the case in any way. I know that collectors often like to have their scientific instruments in original condition.
