He arrived at the island which is now Haiti/Dominican Republic but was unable to find the help he needed. Columbus never did return to Jamaica for his ships or men that were stranded. The stranded men used up there supplies and were unable to gather help from the natives. Sir Henry Morgan’s(probably first) plantation was established in the late 1600’s and the from research of land records that date back to this period of time archeologists were able to locate(possibly for the first time) the location of plantation ruins that also have had at least three subsequent structures erected on it. The sugarcane field workers/residents of this small community are related to the residents who lived in the same area back hundreds of years to Morgan’s time. Morgan died in 1688 but in his will his possessions/lands passed on to his wife and her relatives. Henry Morgan is best known for his sacking of the city of panama and his role as Governor of Port Royal. Port Royal was known in the mid 17th century as a base for privateers making raids on Spanish settlements and shipping. One out of every four buildings in Port Royal was either a tavern or brothel. On June 7. 1692 a devastating earthquake struck followed by three tidal waves. In a matter of minutes all of the two and three storied buildings sank into the sea along with over 3,000 souls. These artifacts have been dated by their design patterns to the 1600's- early 1700's and could very easily and more than likely been part of the dish service used by Captain Henry Morgan himself. The porcelain service ware could also. Possibly have been part of the plunder taken from one of the many ships captured by Morgan and his men. Display and ballast stones are available for an additional cost. Please see below. Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of copper. Usually with tin as the main additive. Bronze is superior to just copper, by being harder, being more resistant to corrosion. Bronze bars and spikes were used in the construction of ships from a very early time. With bronze being very expensive compared to iron. Its use was often reserved for flagships or areas of the ship that were not serviceable. Most military ships in the early 1700's primarily used iron fasteners and cannons due to the high cost of bronze. You will however see flagships and the ships of high ranking military personnel using bronze ... moreextensively. Including their cannon. Bronze was a perfect ship building material as it is very strong but does not rust like iron. On our ship we found many iron spikes and nails that had completely deteriorated leaving behind only their empty encrustation. The impression left behind by a lone gone square nail. Typically bronze only oxidizes superficially; once a copper oxide(eventually becoming copper carbonate) layer is formed. The underlying metal is protected from further corrosion. However, if copper chlorides are formed, a corrosion-mode called"bronze disease" will eventually completely destroy it. In rare circumstances reverse electrolysis is needed to preserve bronze. Although the bronze is quite beautiful when cleaned. Many artifact collectors prefer to leave the item as found. We have learned that a long soaking in salt away, followed by numerous baths in distilled water is sufficient for the bronze found at our wreck site. The most popular choice is to clean the artifact 50/50. Leaving half as found. This allows the beauty of both the bronze and the patina of the years on the ocean bottom to be enjoyed. Shipwreck Artifact HMS Winchester 1695 Lead Sheet with COA FO-0303
Bronze HMS Winchester. 1695 Lead Sheet# FO-0303 Beautiful. Heavy piece. No holes. Low alpha lead. The following is for informational purposes only. None of the items pictured or described below are included in this auction. Lead had many uses in the old world. Its low melting temperature and good strength made it very useful in many applications. Use on the hull. One problem sailors encountered in the day was the shipworm(Teredo navalis) The wood-boring mollusk used the planks of ships’ hulls as a habitat and food source. And could cause significant damage in as little as two years. Sheathing the hull with lead, and later copper, was used to combat this marine enemy. This ship was not sheathed in lead or copper. Lead was also used to patch holes in the hull. And this HMS had numerous patches, the largest being 60lbs with clear sheathing tack ... moreholes and impressions of the ships timbers. Since lead is relatively soft it could be pounded in place and sheathing tacks can easily be driven through it. The process generally was to cover the hole or leak. Caulk, line with canvas, then add a sheet of lead. Fittings Lead was used extensively throughout the ship. Pictured above is a toilet ring and bilge strainer. Bilge strainers like this prevented debris from entering the pumps that were used to remove water from the lowest parts of the ship. Armament. We have found many different calibers of musket and pistol shot including a number of grape shot clusters which were 9 musket balls wrapped in cloth for use in the swivel cannons. Many of the musket balls have clear teeth marks in them giving us a personal connection with the sailors on board. Sailors would chew musket balls to keep their saliva flowing and fend off thirst. 9 musket balls wrapped in cloth to make a grape shot cluster for the swivel guns. All important items ... moresuch as navigational items, mortar and pestles, barrel hoops, trade weights, etc. were made of bronze so that they would not rust. Most military ships in the early 1700's primarily used iron fasteners and cannons due to the high cost of bronze. You will however see flagships and the ships of high ranking military personnel using bronze extensively. Including their cannon. Bronze was a perfect ship material as it is very strong but does not rust like iron. On our ship we found many iron spikes and nails that had completely deteriorated leaving behind only their empty encrustation. The impression left behind by a lone gone square iron nail. We have learned that a long soaking in salt awa

Pirate Port Royal Jamaica Authentic Shipwreck Artifact Powder Horn 1692 W/ COA
One Day Auction Up for offers is this authentic powder horn which was recovered from the pirate city of Port Royal. Jamaica. This is NOT a replica but an actual historic artifact recovered from the sunken city of Port Royal. Jamaica on which the movie Pirates of the Caribbean is loosely based. Port Royal was known in the mid 17th century as a base for privateers making raids on Spanish settlements and shipping. One out of every four buildings in Port Royal was either a tavern or brothel. On June 7, 1692 a devastating earthquake struck followed by three tidal waves. In a matter of minutes all of the two and three storied buildings sank into the sea along with over 3,000 souls. The powder horn was found in the debris area of Port Royal where the British ship HMS Swan was known to have been pushed inland and wrecked by one of the tidal waves ... morethat struck the island as a result of the massive earthquake that devastated the island. The powder horn is of the primer type and would have held smaller amounts of black powder and measures just over 6 inches in length. This horn shows nice workmanship and is in remarkably excellent condition w/ just one of its brass tacks absent. Even more remarkable the horn shows evidence of the sailor who owned this piece and who carved his initials"H B" on the wood plug end of the horn. Perhaps. With some research one could make a positive identification of the full name of the sailor who most likely was aboard the HMS Swan. The artifact comes with a large beautiful color. Photo-certificate of authenticity which details the story of Port Royal's history and has a full description and origin of the artifact. A full provenance and certified pirate city artifact from a recognized historically important archaeological site. A very rare artifact. As are all artifacts that are proven to be directly associated with pirates. Those that are fully documented as being from the most famous pirate settlement on the planet are especially rare. A great opportunity to add this artifact to y
