24" Vintage Old Sailors Seamans Wood Wooden Rope Splicing Tool Fid Pin Nautical
Up for auction is what we believe to be an antique rope tool called a fid. We do not see any manufacturer's marks on the fid and are unsure as to who made it or where it was made. We are also unsure as to how old the fid is but are guessing that it may have been made in the 1940s or 1950s. We are also unsure as to what type of wood the fid is made from. The fid is rather long and measures roughly 24" in length. The butt end of the fid measures roughly 2" in diameter. The fid looks to have a great patina throughout and what looks to be its original finish which may be natural. The fid has nicks. Dings, scratches, discoloration, and dirty and/or stained areas. The tip of the fid also looks to be heavily damaged and has a large missing tip piece. The fid looks to weigh roughly 1 pound 7 ounces. Handcarved Gaboon Ebony Full Fid Sailor's Rope Splicing Tool 8.25" x 5/8"
For auction is a Hand-carved Gaboon Ebony. Sailor's Rope Splicing Fid. 8 3/8 inches long x 5/8 inch wide. The fid was made without the use of a lathe. As such, it is not a perfectly, machined tool, but it is a very symmetrical cylinder. The tip has been reduced to blunt point and polished. Finished with a propolis and beeswax mixture, which preserves the wood, but won't scratch like a traditional finish. It also prevents any cracks from humidity changes and can be hand-applied easily. This fid's dimensions are very close to the standard of a 3/8" full fid or a 5/8" long fid, which represents the diameter of line it is intended to splice. Feel free to ask any questions. 16" Wood Fid Pin Sailor Mariner Seaman Rope Splicing Tool Awl Nautical Antique
Old Sailor's Fid. Made out of solid wood. It measures 16" long by 2" diameter at the widest part. Weighs 1 pound. Simple, functional design with no ornamentation. I don't know if it has a dark stain or an aged patina. You can see in one of the scrapes that the wood is a lighter shade underneath the top layer. We found it at an estate sale in San Diego, California. My best guess is that it's ironwood and dates to around 1900. Condition: Normal. General signs of age and use. A large fid with a nice feel and terrific grain. The tip has been reduced to blunt point and polished. Finished with a propolis and beeswax mixture, which preserves the wood, but won't scratch like a traditional finish. It also prevents any cracks from humidity changes and can be hand-applied easily. This fid's dimensions are very close to the standard of a Full Fid, capable of splicing 9/16" line, or a Long Fid, capable of splicing 7/8" line. This piece is a hand carved Pink Ivory Fid. Once said to be rarer than diamonds. Pink Ivory is a highly treasured wood by the Zulu people. The wood is still very rare. As the trees take hundreds of years to reach a suitable size. Pink Ivory has a very tight grain. And polishes like no other wood. This piece has a beautiful pink color and high sheen. The last two photos were taken without the use of a flash. AAA Grade Pink Ivory. Air dried to 12% MC. Berchemia zeyheri Distribution: Southern Africa.
