Circa 1900, but please make up your own mind about this. The clock measures approx 5 inches(130mm) in diameter across the bezel. And 6 1/4 inches(160mm) across the backplate. It is made from heavy brass. And has a thick bevelled edged glass. As can be seen from the photos. It has a nice clean dial, calibrated in roman numerals, with a fast slow adjustment at the top. It is complete with its key. Winds up and runs as it should, and is in good original condition with very light wear consistent with its age, but no damage. There is a single wall hanging lug at the rear. This is a fine example of its type and it would make a great addition to any collection. Circa 1880-1900, but please make up your own mind about this. The boat hook measures approx 8 inches(200mm) tall and is made from solid brass throughout. It is modeled as an anchor. Balanced with wax. Graduated quadrantally and in 1/4 points. The card of this compass was replaced and is dated 1859. It is inscribed'late Bradford. 99 Minories, London, nautical instrument maker' This would indicate that John Omer had taken over George Bradford's business. Date made circa 1840. Replacement card 1859, Artist/Maker Place made London. The contact on the minute hand would have made contact with the markers around the dial as it rotated. Completing an electrical circuit, and ringing a bell or buzzer at pre set intervals as it did so. The markers would have been set to pre determined times before the convoy sailed. So that once a signal was given to commence evasive action, every ship on the convoy could take co ordinated evasive action, and zig zag in unison. It is marked on the movement BRITISH and on the dial HEZZANITH MARK A ZIG ZAG KELVIN-MONTREAL It is complete with its key and the movement winds up and runs OK. But I assume that like most antique clocks, it would benefit from a service. It is in original unrestored condition with some wear to the dial paintwork and splits in the brass case(see photos) This is a rare maritime clock and it would make a great addition to any collection.
