I did clean this item up just a litlle bit. The other piece I would point out is that one of the fins. The rope need to be re-attached or replaced. It has a W. Ludolph instrument with it. Presented is an excellent example of a Walker Trident Electric log instrument head. Made by Thomas Walker& Son. Ltd of Birmingham, England, it looks in excellent condition. It has some scuffing and minor spotting on its case which will polish out. It features an instrument head with a white porcelain face. And analog counters with black Arabic numbers for distance run. It does not include the electric wire, taffrail register or rotor. This is one of Walker's most advanced logs. It was introduced in 1902 and allowed the navigator to remain in the pilot house to take his readings rather than at the vessel's stern where the log register was located. OLD SOLID BRASS WALKER'S COMMODORE ELECTRIC LOG FOR TELLING SPEED OF VESSEL.
For your consideration I am listing an old devise that was used to indicate the speed of a sailing vessel. They would tow the spinning prop behind the vessel and the speed at which the prop turned was correlated to how fast the vessel was moving in the water. There is about 20 pounds of brass in this devise and that alone is worth a lot. But where are you going to find another one like this. On the white gauge it says: WALKER'S COMMODORE ELECTRIC LOG. Antique KNOTMASTER LOG (Model KDO) by Thomas Walker, Ship Speed Meter!
KNOTMASTER LOG(Model KDO) Ship Speed Meter! Made by Thomas Walker of; Walker& Sons in England. Thos. 58 Oxford Street, Birmingham, B5 5NX, UK. Included is the Knotmaster and mounting bracket. One"new" one used rotator. Four sinkers. And assorted lines. There appears to be an original oil squeeze bottle, and fragments of the original sticker remaining. It also has a small cellophane package(contents unknown) We simply do not wish to open this. But, it appears to be a collar, or bushing, or spacer, or sleeve of some sort, and one white plastic tool/holder. And of course, it’s original wood box. Also, the"new" rotator has it’s original tag, with instructions. See pics! Considering it’s age. This unit appears to us to be in Very Good, if not Excellent Condition, though we're no experts! It has what appears to be lite ... morenormal oxidization on the used rotator, and none to extremely light in spots on the new rotator. In addition, two out of four sinkers have a light oxidization. The amount of oxidization on each part obviously varies according to it’s use and exposure, which as you may know, is normal for this item. Understanding dad as we did, we are confident this unit works as intended, and is fully functional. Nevertheless, we have not had the pleasure of actually running it. Note: Experts requiring any test to be run(of it’s functionality) will have to provide us SAFE& ACCEPTABLE methods of doing so. As to not harm the unit! We will then do our best to accommodate! Antique 1900's Brass Taffrail Log Rotor Assembly. Signed Cherub which is a British model manufactured by Thomas Walker. A very well known maker of nautical instruments. This piece also comes with the round wheel governor and attached sections of heavy braided rope. Register instrument not available the governor wheel attaches to the register instrument which would be mounted on the ship. The assembly is dragged through the water on a tow line and the register measures the rotors revolutions and converts them to nautical miles. Rotor is signed Cherub. Made in England by Thos Wlaker& Son Ltd 58 Oxford Street Birmingham. It is made from brass. It is quite heavy(over the 5 pound limit of my delicate scale) It is about 7 pounds. The Brass part. Is about 9 1/2 inches long. Not tested. And although a display piece, it appears to be working- for example when I rotate the rear hoop, the lower right needle turns slowly as expected(works both ways) These items were used by dragging a propeller behind a boat. And each turn of the propeller corresponded to distance- thereby recording the distance travelled. Cosmetic condition as shown- dial has some minor damage. And there are some numbers scratched into the exterior near the lower front end. Or log reader, a large brass spinner, an iron balance ring and a brass weight attached to the spinner. Both the meter and the spinner are marked as being a Walkers Cherub Ships Log, T.W. To that end someone has at one time polished all of the brass and then sealed it with a coat of lacquer to inhibit tarnishing, keeping it in that fresh polished look forever. Offered from a local seacoast NH estate is this bronze Harpoon Ship Log made by T. Walker. London. It was found in an old sea chest in the attic of an early Dover, NH home. Three dials indicate tens of miles, miles, and 1/2 miles are on the porcelain. As photo'd, the log door closes when turned(a bit tough as it has not been cleaned, or WD-40'd) There is some damage to the dial as seen in a photo. I think it is from about 1860s-70s. The log was thrown off the back(tethered) and recorded speed/mileage traveled. Pretty neat for mid-19th century. The dial is also marked; T Walker's, Patent, Harpoon Ship Log, A.3, London. Measures approx. 16" tip to end, where there is a fin that turns when the water to register travel. There is some corrosion/copper rust on this fin, but spins freely. Old Walker Cherub mark 111 ships/boats log in original wooden box. Dates to around the mid 20th century. This is a instrument that was used to measure the distance the boat/ship had travelled. It came from a house clearance sale so don't have much info about it. There is instructions on the paper label inside lid. It is all made out of solid heavy brass and looks fairly complete to my limited knowledge. The only think that it might have had that is not here is a thing like a steering wheel that I see some of the other logs listed has. But don't know if this had that or not. All looks to be in fairly good condition with no damage that I can find. Would benefit from a good clean/polish up. You are buying this vintage Walker's Taffrail ships log that was made in the early 1900's in England. I have no way of testing the unit for any accuracy but nothing leads me to believe that it would not work however I an selling this as is without returns. Please be aware of that before bidding. Having said that this thing is a precision beauty[ my dad was a tool& die maker and taught me the meaning of quality in tools] and appears to function. The brass fins are free of any dings or bends so the accuracy should be true when spinning. On the old label inside the box it reads for up to 20 knots speed. The box has dovetail joints but looks to have been painted at some time. It is quite sturdy and holds the items well. The mechanics on the dial piece turn as intended with no issues. No cracks. Antique Ship Taffrail Speed Log Part T.W. Cherub T. Walker & Sons LTD England
An Antique Taffrail Speed Log in"as found" condition. This was part of the log that was used to measure a ship's speed before electrical gauges. A very nicely made piece with a nice patina to the brass. All of the vanes are marked T.W. CHERUB. One is marked T. WALKER. It measures 15 1/2" in length by 6" wide to the outside of the vanes. Walker Cherub taffrail log, Line Rotator Spinner
We are unsure of exactly what term is used for this piece but it is found with some Taffrail Logs. The diameter of the spinner measures apprx 10-1/2" The braided rope measures 18-1/2" long including the hook at the end. This is in good condition.

Antique T. Walker & Sons Cherub Nautical Mileage Speed LOG
I've had this old. Brass nautical speed log in my collection of maritime stuff for a long time and it's time it found a new home. The brass, bullet-shaped torpedo is hollow and measures 14" and is secured to a brass fixture by a braided rope. The manufacturer info is stamped on one of the blades and"T.W. Cherub and an anchor stamped on all the blades. It make a nice decoration for nautical themed rooms or man caves and is a real conversation starter. It would look very cool all polished.
