Very Unusual Old Antique Shipwright's Caulking Mallet or Hammer Ironwood
Antique shipwright's caulking mallet. Or hammer. This is probably one of the oldest caulking mallets that I have personally ever seen. I think it could be made usable but I feel that it should probably be in a collection& not used. Entire mallet weighs 2&1/2# ironwood head is 13&3/4" long& 1&3/4" diameter inside the steel rings. It has a very unusual head that is hard to describe. Center piece is roughly 5" long& rounded top& bottom, 2&3/4" wide on the rounded top& bottom, a little over 1" tall across the flat sides with two brass pinions side to side. One"end" of the mallet head measures 4&1/4" long, the other end measures 4&1/2" both ends being slotted. Both faces were very feathered& I just barely faced them with a sharp saw. Rings are larger ... morethan any I have seen& are roughly an inch wide. Handle is probably not original, looks like old oak& has 5 or 6 pin holes in it that may have been from powder post beetles. If they were they are long gone. Handle has a rectangular head that measures 1&1/4" by 1" is 11&1/8" long from bottom of mallet head to end. Handle is loose enough that I can pull it& ship that way. I can find no maker's name on this mallet. Like the other 2 caulking hammers that I have listed this is from the estate of an old shipwright in the Port Townsend/ Port Hadlock area of the Olympic Northwest. ANTIQUE SHIPWRIGHT'S ADZE FORGED IRON. STEEL& WOOD For your collecting pleasure we feature a group of three antique adzes. Displaying three different types of this important tool, which we believe are known as: The Straight Adze. The Curved Gutter-Adze. the Shipwright's Adze. This listing is for what we believe is known as the Shipwright's Adze. With the curled edges. This would be one of the rarer forms, and appears to be a good, useable example, dating from the days when ships were built of wood and required lots of careful hewing, trimming, chipping and fitting of the massive hardwood ribs of the ship's skeleton. The expert carpenters wielding such a tool were highly specialized, their trade required enormous skill& dedication, lots of trained, muscular hard& patient work. Usually one finds adzes that are straight ... morewithout the curled edges. The contour of this one is special. And would appear to help shear off the chip at the edges of the cut away from the adjacent wood, so it wouldn't split off material, neatening up the cut& making more of a flat scoop than cleaving off a flake like an axe. The edge looks intact. The handle sturdy, and the form light, agile& elegant. It's a truly beautiful and dynamic-looking edge-tool. It just about begs you to pick it up and try it out. Measures about 30-3/4" in Length. Antique Shipwright's Caulking Mallet - Very Nice Example with iron bands!
A beautiful 19th century caulking mallet. These were used. And still are, to hammer oakum into the seams between the boards of a wooden ship. This one measures 14 1/2" Long and about 13" Wide. The metal iron bands are intact and the piece has beautiful traces of history and use. Based on its construction and coloration I would date this early to mid 1800's. Combined shipping discounts. Large antique shipwright's shipbuilder's carpenter's metal timber clamp

When they built large wooden ships-master shipwrights would use large clamps like these to force planks and other wooden member into shape prior to nailing or bolting them in place. This is a particulary nice example-notice the pointed end that dug into wood-flat ends would not have worked as it would have slid off curved surfaces. It is about 21 inches fully closed. Fully opened. It could clamp wooden pieces up to about 14 inches thick. It weighs about 18 pounds and is made of heavy forged steel. ANTIQUE LIGNUM VITAE AND BRASS MOULSON BROTHERS SHIPWRIGHT'S RAZEE JACK PLANE
Up for auction is a circa 1860 lignum vitae and brass razee jack plane. What exactly is a razee plane? The name is derived from the nautical term razee, a sailing ship that has been cut down to reduce the number of decks. The name is derived from the French vaisseau rasé. Meaning a razed. In a similar context, the rear part of the wooden plane is lowered in a cut-away style, lowering the totes position on the plane. Lowering the tote allows for better balance, and more precise control by lowering the centre of gravity. It also aligns the force being applied right behind the blade. The planes are generally made of a hard wood such as Lignum Vitae, which is resistant to wear, but heavy. Razee planes are quiet unique in the genre of planes, often used by shipwrights. One form of the plane, the“technical jack plane” is touted to have been ... moreused in school workshops, making for a lighter tool and easier to use for the beginner. In one book, Woodworking A Book of Tools, Materials, and Processes for the Handyman” 1906, Paul Hasluck) identifies a razee as a“ sunk handle jack plane with closed toat“ See http:workingbyhand.wordpress.com/2013/10/09/razee-planes/ The body of the plane is unsigned but the iron is signed"Moulson Brothers warranted steel" which places it around 1860. Antique Shipwright's Chest - c. 1912
This chest was built/used by D. L. Souder. A shipwright in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I bought it an the auction of his granddaughter's home in 1975. Several of the tools had his name and 1912 stamped into the wooden handles. Tools are NOT included in this sale. I did a search on D. L. Souder and was able to verify that a D. L. Souder lived in the Tidewater area during that time. The hasp which appears to be cast copper is damaged.

In good condition. An antique boat caulking chisel that has a 2 1/4" edge and is about 5 3/4" long. There is some rust to clean, but the edge is without nicks.
