The sighting tube. Mirrors and shades are all intact. There is some slight corrosion(mirrors and some on body) which could be cleaned off but I do not intend to do that as it may lower the value and reduce authenticity markings. It has a small light that was obviously for illumination the arc which has a wire running up the body to the wooden handle. This would have, at one time, had some form of plastic or rubber coating on it(as is evident from some being still there) but approx 50% of the coating has deteriorated and fallen away- Please inspect the images for details. The Sextant is in quite good condition considering it is 78 years old. Indent stamped. On the ruled brass part states: MADE FOR THE SOUTHWEST INSTRUMENT CO. CALIFORNIA" and"H Hughes& Son Ltd. 59 Fenchurch St, London E.C. It is marked with the number"19881" The Card label. On the inside of the box lid is framed in brass and in a good intact condition. It certifys that sextant number"19881" was inspected on"24th September, 1936" It comes with the mahogany wood box(no key) which is made of a jointed construction with brass hardware. Please see the last image; the base of the box has some seperation of the wood in the middle. It is not loose and does not interfere with the construction as the screws either side hold it firmly together. It measures 28 x 26.5 x 14.5cms(11" X 10 1/2" X 5 3/4" Weight of the boxed sextant is 3.8kgs so with some good packaging and a sturdy box it will be approx 4kgs for shipping; I have added shipping charges for this but the price does not take into account for insurance; the price sold will be the value for insur

The Binnacle measures 54 inches high and ... morehas a diameter of 15 inches and the base is 20 inches square. The Gimbaled magnetic compass is 10 inches in diameter. The Heeling indicator was also made by Dobbie McInnes Ltd. The Binnacle is made from Teak and Brass. There are two hinged doors which open to the magnetic deviation rods. Two Bass oil lamp holders provide light at night for the compass and there are brass covers for protection during bad weather as well as one for taking bearings since the compass enclosure rotates as necessary. The glass window to the compass is cracked and the Compass Card paint has peeled. Other than these two items, the Binnacle and Compass are in excellent condition and have been owned by the same family since before the second world war. Th e Binnacle and Compass can be shipped. The name'CAPT STEWARD' and'SS MONTCALM' is engraved into the plaque on top of the box. There are two original labels on the inside of the lid; the smaller label confirms the retailer as E R Watt& Son of Camberwell Road. London. The larger one, dated 7 th June 1942. Displays the Husun Trademark, Henry Hughes& Son Ltd, London and details the correction instructions. There are some accessories missing. Also. The case has no key or lock and shows some signs of wear including a crack to the base as photographed. The sextant is in very good condition for it's age, nicely polished and is a fine collectors piece. A nice brass/bronze three-circle frame black-crackle finish marine sextant. Engraved on the arc'24055. H. HUGHES& SON LTD, 59 Fenchurch St. LONDON. EC, MADE IN ENGLAND' Husun” trademark(worn) on radial arm. Also brass tag engraved“Made for J. Sewill, Liverpool” With telescope and a direct view. Seven shades, filter, cleaning brush and spanner in fitted mahogany case with'HUSUN' certificate of examination, dated 1940. The serial number on the sextant matches the certificate. The sextant is 6" in radius. The index arm has a quick-release clamp at the end. The silvered scale is graduated every degree from–5° to +140° and read by ... morea vernier scale with a magnifier. The threaded telescope bracket/ holder is adjusted by a rising-piece and a milled knob. The instrument is showing some signs of use. But is in generally good condition. The black finish has some wear– mainly to edges and feet. Optically it is in good condition with mirrors, shades and lenses in good condition with no damage that I can see. Detachable filter also present. All mechanical parts seem to be working correctly and move freely. However, it has not been calibrated for 74 years so I cannot guarantee accuracy. Please examine pictures. The sextant is fitted in its mahogany case with brass hinges. Catches and a brass handle. The case was made by B. Cooke& Son Ltd. Hull. I don’t know if the case is original to the sextant, but if not it must have been used with this sextant prior to 1940 when the last calibration was carried out. The case has fitted compartments for telescope and rack cleaning brush(included, but has split as shown) and filter. A rare Husun Star Globe retailed by Henry Hughes& Son. Marked 1920, London. With brass horizon and meridian rings, in fitted mahogany case. The mahogany case has lots of scratches and marks but this is all surface, it opens and closes nicely and the original latches are in place and working. The globe is in reasonable condition for age: some discolouration and small scuffs to the top, turns smoothly.

This instrument is in good well maintained condition being of traditional three circle marine sextant design.
