This is a wonderful bit of old kit and it comes in its original fitted pine box measuring 38 by 17 by 14 cm and weighing just over 4.5 kilos all in. I dont know the exact age but judging by the reference to"Motor launches" I imagine it to date from the 1920s or so. I can remember the deck officers using a log like this on a 1950s ship I was working on in the 1970s going across from Cape Town to Buenos Aires. It was cloudy and foggy all the way and they could not get sunsights so navigated on a dead reckoning basis using the patent log and our engine revolutions to estimate position. When we missed the mouth of the River Plate by 90 miles there was much banter between deck officers and us engineers about ... morewhose data was wrong! Of course we engineers placed great emphasis upon the fact that our data was based on facts that could be recorded and were written down in the engine room log.
