Early 19th Century Boarding Hook Typical of those used by both naval parties of the Revolutionary War. War of 1812 and whaling ships alike. This hand wrought iron pike would have been affixed to a long wooden pole. Users of skiffs and boarding boats would have utilized the hook to pull their boats into dock. Up for auction is a very RARE and unusual Whaling Nautical very old Antique Killing Lance. Or Killing Spear that would attach to a very thick wooden pole to deliver the death blow quickly and effectively with weighted force to penetrate bone. This is large and heavy at just about 25 inches long by 4 inches wide at the widest part of the blade while weighing over 5 pounds. It has a beautiful patina and is in great shape with many of the hand hammered impressions clearly visible in close up photos. This is a remarkable very early most likely circa late 1700's-early 1800's piece of Whaling and Maritime history that is rare to find in such outstanding. Museum quality condition. As evidenced by the signs of fire charring around the back of the base, it is likely that the piece was cut off a salvaged or wrecked vessel. A ship's figurehead was looked upon as being one of the most important parts of a ship, and certainly would have been saved if it was possible. Excellent patina overall, with a few age cracks. Antique Whaling Baleen Axe. Hand made, old and in great condition. Blade is 21&3/4" long and the handle is 17" long. The iron is definitely hand forged in the old ways. The handle I believe is wrapped in tendon and is in good shape. There is wood under the wrap on the handle to give a more comfortable grip. This axe was used to cut baleen from a whale's mouth and split the head open to collect the oil from the brain cavity. The iron is very sharp. And does appear to have ever been hit on the back which would have been pounded to split the skull. I bought this from a whaling collector. I believe this is the real deal because of the source. And because I cannot find any replicas. When whaling died out. Many harpoons got put on the wall as decor, but baleen axes are very rare, I know of one on display in a whaling museum in ... moreCanada, and 1 sold privately on Ebay awhile ago. Antique T. Bailey, New Bedford Whaling Ship Oil Painting Nautical Seascape NR
Absolutely gorgeous seascape- oil on canvas. By the famed and shadowy early 20th century artist T. Bailey. Bailey's very existence is in doubt in some sort of Pynchonian obfuscation; his signature is variously claimed as pseudonym for as many as four separate artists. And purported by others to be the errant brainchild of a scheming huckster expertly peddling oils to decorate the walls the plush oak and cigar smoke filled dens of bankers and insurance men. Nevertheless, the paintings fetched a hefty price in their day and continue to be widely sought after. If the story is grand, it may only be exceeded by the painting's actual aesthetic quality. This particular example of"T Bailey's" work is about expertly composed as they come. Almost the entirety of Bailey's oeuvre consists of detailed seascapes. And of course ... moreare of varying quality depending to which artist the piece may be attributed. A similar piece recently sold on eBay of a New Bedford whaling vessel, and on close inspection I would contend that this painting is a companion piece, showing the same vessel from a different angle. Again the detail is just stunning- Bailey perfectly captures the play of the light- arguably the most difficult task of an artist set to properly tackle the seascape- capturing the magisterial beauty of both sky and twin sea, both equally alight with elegance and an element of foreboding. Antique Brass 18th C Era Maritime Boarding Hook Nice Example Whaling Ship Description: Late 18th. Early 19th Century Boarding Hook Typical of those used by both naval parties whaling ships alike. Circa 1780-1840. This brass boarding hook head would have been affixed to a long wooden pole. Users of skiffs and boarding boats would have utilized the hook to pull their boats into dock. Nice overall form and original patina. As you can see it retains it's original copper pins. A portion of the wood from the original shaft is present on the piece. Could be removed if one chose to take the copper pins out. I think it displays nicely standing upright as the wood is cut straight. Four copper pins in all. 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE SAILOR MADE WHALEBONE COATHOOK. WHALING
This whale bone coathook came out of a New Bedford estate. Was made by an unknown whaleman aboard ship. The pictures best describe this rare item and artifact from the days of whaling. As can be seen it has an old original screw running through the bone hook. Condition is as seen: well used probably made for sailor's own use aboard his vessel. Measures a tad under 4 inches. ANTIQUE 18th. EARLY 19th. C.WHALING KNIFE or BLUBBER SPADE AAFA NR This tool was used in the flensing process which is a whaling term that describes the removal of the blubber from the carcass of the dead whale.It would then be cut into smaller pieces and skinned in preparation to be melted down to whale oil. This is an extremely well made hand forged tool. Most likely by a blacksmith. The shank goes through the large wooden handle, then down to the blade where it splits and attaches on both sides.The blade is carbon steel and still maintains a relatively sharp edge.The measurements are: 7 1/2 inches from top of handle to bottom of blade, blade is 9 1/2 inches long by 3 inches wide,handle is 7 1/2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide in the center. RARE ANTIQUE SAILOR MADE MACRAME & CARVED WOOD NEEDLE CASE - WHALING

Antique sailor-made needle case for repairing sails on Whaling ships, etc. It is a double case with hard macramé(woven material with beeswax) exterior and interior engraved wood case, both in the shape of a cigar. Contains two original needles as shown and"as is" Size: 1" diameter and 5" long.
